Wines included
The Society's 150th Anniversary Stellenbosch Cabernet 2015
This richly concentrated cabernet to celebrate our anniversary comes from Kanonkop’s own Simonsberg vineyards and a superb Cape vintage, hailed as one of the very best of the last 20 years. Estate fruit was vinified in open-top fermenters and the wine was matured in new and second-fill French oak barrels for two years. In this still vigorous dry red, plush, dark berry fruit is complemented by hints of spice, coffee and mocha, with sweet, integrated tannins, leading to a long and persistent finish. Expect its dense fruit and structure to continue to mellow slowly, developing more cigar-box and indigenous fynbos complexity to 2030 and beyond. On release, enjoy the wine after an hour or two in a decanter to remove any sediment and reveal its full panoply of flavours. For more on the story of this wine, please scroll down.
Cap Maritime Chardonnay, Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley 2020
Cellarmaster Gottfried Mocke was recognised for the chardonnays he made at Cape Chamonix in Franschhoek. Now at the famous Boekenhoutskloof estate, his remit includes an exciting new venture in the cooler Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, making classically styled, barrel-fermented chardonnay with real finesse.
Beaumont Hope Marguerite Chenin Blanc Bot River 2022
Sebastian Beaumont`s top chenin. This riper, expressive South African vintage offers generous creamy texture reined in by a core of pithy freshness. The mouthfeel culminates in a long and persistent finish on the palate.
Taaibosch 'Crescendo', Stellenbosch 2020
A blend of 60% cabernet franc, 30% merlot, 10% cabernet sauvignon, maintaining the estate`s reputation for, and commitment to, the cabernet franc grape. A little over 30% new oak - medium toast - has already melded beautifully with the smooth-textured, lush, dark berry fruit. No Cape blockbuster, this is an elegant, restrained yet captivating wine, with fine tannins and the promise of graceful development in bottle.
Meerlust Estate Chardonnay, Stellenbosch 2023
A freshly tweaked Meerlust chardonnay from Wim Truter, whose aim is to showcase the site not the cellar. A combination of concrete and oak fermentation from a block of shale and granite, this is fresh and zesty alongside the classic cedar spice. Great purity and elegance.
Meerlust Estate Pinot Noir, Stellenbosch 2023
A sweet, smoky, spicy Burgundian-style pinot noir from the warmer Stellenbosch vineyards of South Africa's Meerlust estate. Excellent wine with a satisfyingly velvety texture.
