Six Society Wines
Wines included
The Society's Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2022
This traditional Italian red is full of flavour and warmth, and is a firm favourite with Wine Society members. It is made for us by Roxan, a small, top-quality co-operative, from the montepulciano grape, grown in vineyards around Rosciano near Pescara on the Adriatic coast. With a cherry and strawberry perfume that leaps out of the glass and a palate that is delightfully fruity but full and rich, it is an excellent partner for full-flavoured cooking. The new label depicts the Apennine wolf, a species found in the Abruzzo, the home of this popular wine.
The Society's California Old-Vine Zinfandel 2022
Classic zinfandel from California, with cherry and sarsaparilla on the nose, wild strawberry and redcurrant coming through on the full yet soft palate and a hint of vanilla on the finish.
The Society's Gavi 2023
A great go-to dry white with apple and aromatic herbs on the perfume and mineral weight on the lemon-scented palate. Lovely by the glass but it also pairs easily with a range of dishes from seafood to creamy pasta bakes.
The Society's Argentine Malbec 2023
This is the ideal introduction to Argentine malbec. It has a forthcoming floral aroma with some black-fruit character and a fresh, round and balanced palate. It's mainly from the Valle de Uco for aroma and intensity of flavour with some Agrelo fruit for richness. It is produced exclusively for The Wine Society by Dominio del Plata, a winery owned by one of Argentina`s most celebrated winemakers, Susana Balbo. A gaucho rides on a sheepskin covered saddle which is illustrated on the new label.
The Society's Austrian Riesling 2023
With delicate aromas of orange blossom and quince, this is a fine example of the crisp, dry style of riesling Austria does so well. Perfect on its own, with seafood, creamy dishes or, naturally, schnitzel. Weingut Wess is a small family-owned winery in the beautiful town of Krems in Lower Austria. Riesling is a passion for talented young winemaker Christina Wess and this exclusive wine is blended from a selection of vineyards across the Kremstal region.
The Society's White Burgundy 2023
A fine, dry white wine of great delicacy from the Mâconnais in southern Burgundy, the warmest part of the region. The wine is ripe and round, with flavours of toasted hazelnut, apple and stone fruit, a hint of citrus and a lovely streak of minerality. The quality of the wine reflects the deep involvement in its selection by successive buyers and the skill of our ‘man on the ground`, Jean-Marc Darbon, who excels in sourcing the right blending options for us to work with. The zander (sandre in French) thrives in the rivers of Burgundy and is shown on this wine`s new label. It has a fine flavour because its carnivorous and so is much superior to that of weed-eating fish. It`s as good as wild brown trout to eat and appears frequently on menus in Burgundian restaurants. Don`t hesitate to try it.
