Small Wonders Reds Case
Wines included
Ch La Dauphine Fronsac 2017
A refined and charming right-bank Bordeaux with velvety texture and the hallmark freshness of the 2017 vintage. It will be a pleasure to drink throughout its drink window.
Taurasi, Feudi di San Gregorio 2018
The DOCG of Taurasi is in the province of Avellino in Campania, on volcanic soils where aglianico vines thrive. Though slightly under the radar, it can create some of Italy's finest reds. Here the flavours of violets, blackcurrant and liquorice are complex and last well on the balsamic, lifted finish.
The Society's 150th Anniversary Moulin-à-Vent 2019
The elements of the blend that make up this delicious Beaujolais come from four well-known and well-respected growers in the Moulin-à-Vent appellation. Just under 10% of the wine was aged in small three and four year old oak barrels, not to impart obvious oak flavour but instead to add to the texture and structure of the palate. This is a deliciously mellow, mature cru Beaujolais, with mid-ruby colour and a nose of brambles and dried herbs. Perfect with charcuterie, roast chicken or goose, or a mushroom ragout. Refined and classy cru Beaujolais. For more on the story of this wine, please scroll down.
Tablas Creek Patelin de Tablas Rouge, Paso Robles 2022
Traditional southern Rhône-style blend from the warm region of Paso Robles in California, skilfully made by Jason Haas. Raspberry and plum fruits are well balanced by savoury black-olive and soy flavours that develop on the surprisingly fresh palate.
Lelie Van Saron Syrah, Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley 2021
Fine-boned, perfumed and gloriously spicy South African syrah from the cool Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley made by Natasha Williams. Naturally fermented in open top fermenters with 40% whole clusters before fermentation and maturation in old French oak. Pure bramble fruit, white pepper spice and gorgeous tannins. One to watch.
El Pacto Ojo Gallo, Rioja 2022
From a vineyard planted in 1957 to a mix of red and white grapes – garnacha, tempranillo, viura, malvasia – this pale red wine, almost pink, is fine, delicate and gentle with lovely appealing floral fruit and no oak influence. This is a style that contrasts with today's deeper, fuller Riojas.
