Small Wonders Whites
Wines included
Côtes du Roussillon Blanc Terres Nouvelles, La Préceptorie 2021
This is 100% grenache gris, fermented and raised in barrel. This old grape variety was the secret behind many of the top fortified wines from this part of the Roussillon in the deepest south of France because of its acidity and ability to age. This is dry, unfortified and goes well with grilled fish, shellfish and white meats.
Simpsons 'The Roman Road' Chardonnay, Kent 2022
Simpsons are producing some of the finest examples of chardonnay in the UK, and the single-vineyard Roman Road is their 'premier cru'. Fermented in a combination of French oak and stainless steel from the warm 2022 vintage produces a broad and complex chardonnay with notes of citrus, cedar and nutmeg with real texture.
Grabenwerkstatt Wachauwerk, Grüner Veltliner, Wachau 2022
This wine continues to impress in the 2022 vintage, with a more approachable character than previous years, all while maintaining its hallmark freshness, finesse and intensity. The nose shows lime, aloe vera, pine-needle and lemon-pith notes. The palate is pristine with a delicately spicy character and a slightly more linear structure than previous vintages. Some salinity brings complexity and the delicious bright citrus notes grow on the long finish. A detailed, focused wine from one of Europe's most exciting producers. Decant if drinking young.
Burkheimer Feuerberg Grauburgunder Baden, Bercher 2021
Appropriately named vineyard from what used to be a volcano called the Kaiserstuhl in central Baden, just across the river from Alsace where pinot gris is equally favoured. The style is different, the Baden version being dryer and more restrained, though this is richly flavoured and noticeably spicy.
Kooyong Clonale Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay 2022
Light, crisp and elegant white, with very subtle and masterfully used oak. Aromas of green apple skins, crushed black pepper, cashew, lime zest and apricot lead to a crisp, fine and finessed palate. This is a light-bodied white with a fine bead of freshness running throughout. A savoury note adds depth to the palate and the finish is long, with salt and pepper, lemon juice, mango and a vanilla twist. Drink now to 2027. 13%
Orvieto Classico Superiore Luigi e Giovanna, Barberani 2021
Top-quality Umbrian white by any international standard, with almond-skin, oyster-shell, sage and lemon-rind flavours that last well on the finish. The blend is 90% grechetto (of which 5% was affected by noble rot) and 10% trebbiano procanico.
