The Society's Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine sur Lie 2022
This wine has been sourced for over 30 years from the impeccable family firm of Chéreau-Carré. Just before the Loire spills into the Atlantic, it is joined by the Sèvre and Maine rivers. The vineyards around their confluence produce the best Muscadet, whose distinctive tangy flavour is enhanced by prolonged contact with the yeast lees produced during fermentation (sur Lie). There is a new, lighter 'Burgundy' bottle without a capsule, and a smart new label. There is even a touch more colour to this wine in the riper 2022 vintage. It is a famous accompaniment to shellfish, for which very good reason an oyster features on our new label, but is just as delicious with chicken and fuller-flavoured fish among a range of other dishes, not to mention being a pleasure on its own.
The Society's South African Chenin Blanc, Stellenbosch 2023
Now sporting new Society livery, which alludes to the sustainable farming practices long employed by the Grier family at Villiera, namely pest-eating geese in the vineyards. Old bush-vines - some over 30 years old - provide a richer component to which an earlier-picked proportion is added to lift its bright stone-fruit flavour. It's worth decanting for 20 minutes or so to let it's aromas unfurl.
The Society's White Rioja 2021
A classically styled white Rioja made from this great Spanish region's traditional white grapes (mostly viura with some malvasia), with a proportion aged in barrel for around two years. It is lemony gold in colour with aromas that are spicy and nutty, rather than fruity. Produced by Bodegas Hacienda Lopez de Haro (previously Bodegas Classica) who own some prime vineyards in Sonsierra.
The Society's New Zealand Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2023
Made exclusively for us by Villa Maria, this is a grapefruit and lime-scented, bright, generous and refreshing New Zealand sauvignon, deliciously crisp.
The Society's Chilean Limarí Sauvignon Blanc 2023
Made from a very cool vineyard planted on limestone soils just 7.5 miles from the chilly Pacific Ocean, this is a more mineral than fruity, crystalline, European, less is more style. Limarí's cool and dry climate suits sauvignon blanc and cacti, hence the illustration on the new label. Made for us by Viña Tabalí.
The Society's Sicilian White 2023
This unique blend especially created for The Wine Society is 80% grillo, which gives a lovely rich apricot and peach-fruit flavour to this crisp Sicilian white, with 20% carricante, which lifts the freshness while adding an elegant mineral note to the perfume. Enjoy this versatile wine straight from the fridge or with food such as zingy salads, simply grilled seafood, chicken dishes, creamy pasta or risottos.
The Society's Greek White 2023
2023 was a fabulous year for roditis, providing opulent stone-fruit while moschofilero provides rose-hip backing vocals. The result is a more fruit-forward wine with less floral perfume than the 2022 but filled with peach and grapefruit notes on the refreshing palate.
The Society's English White 2023
2023 was a record breaking harvest for the UK and we're thrilled with our own-label English white produced by Three Choirs in Gloucestershire. We aim for consistency year-on-year to give gentle aromatics of white flowers, hedgerow and gooseberry with a light, delicate palate that's ideal with spring salads or aperitif. The grape blend in this vintage is a delicious melting pot of 30% madeleine angevine, 20% seyval blanc, 5% solaris, 10% siegerrebe, 10% phoenix, 10% reichensteiner, and 5% bacchus.
The Society's Grüner Veltliner 2023
Succulent pear and white-pepper aromas, followed by nectarine flavours and a refreshing spritz on the palate. Textbook Austrian grüner from the historic Stadt Krems winery.
The Society's Côtes de Gascogne 2023
A fine and refreshing white from the rolling hills of Gascony. This is made from a blend of grape varieties that includes chenin and gros manseng, with touches of tropical fruit and a flash of mouthwatering citrus.
The Society's Alvarinho, Vinho Verde 2023
Another year, another Wine Champion vintage of this summery, fresh and sophisticated Vinho Verde, showing ‘lovely, fresh, crisp purity with plenty of yellow fruit.` Summer sipping par excellence from a Portuguese standard-bearer .
The Society's White Burgundy 2023
A fine, dry white wine of great delicacy from the Mâconnais in southern Burgundy, the warmest part of the region. The wine is ripe and round, with flavours of toasted hazelnut, apple and stone fruit, a hint of citrus and a lovely streak of minerality. The quality of the wine reflects the deep involvement in its selection by successive buyers and the skill of our ‘man on the ground`, Jean-Marc Darbon, who excels in sourcing the right blending options for us to work with. The zander (sandre in French) thrives in the rivers of Burgundy and is shown on this wine`s new label. It has a fine flavour because its carnivorous and so is much superior to that of weed-eating fish. It`s as good as wild brown trout to eat and appears frequently on menus in Burgundian restaurants. Don`t hesitate to try it.
