South By South West Treeton Margaret River Chenin Blanc 2022

0 star rating 0 Reviews
A barrel-fermented Australian chenin blanc, but using no new oak so that the texture is full and rounded but without over-the-top oak flavour. The nose is brooding and delicately toasty, with notes of nougat and charred peaches. The palate is broad, fleshy and with nicely integrated acidity. The generous and flavoursome palate has a long and complex finish, with a note of peppery brioche, lime zest and mouthwatering acidity. Many of the barrels for this wine were purchased from Leeuwin Estate and previously used to make the iconic Art Series chardonnay, enhancing this wine's fantastic value. Chenin blanc has a long history in Western Australia, with the first plantings coming from South Africa over 150 years ago. After a glut the less good sites were mostly pulled up, leaving only the very best. This example comes from the Treeton sub-region of Margaret River on a gently sloping hillsides.

Quite complex and a welcome addition to what Margaret River has to offer. Quite saline – not the honey of SA and Loire examples but well balanced and not overpriced.
