District 7 Monterey Pinot Noir 2021
A great pinot from Monterey in California where the vines benefit from the cooling winds and fogs from the Pacific. This is a vibrant redcurrant and cranberry-fruited wine, with a little balancing oak and a fresh finish. Scheid Family Wines estate vineyards have been certified by the California Sustainable Winegrowing program since 2014. Their winery is 100% powered by their 400-foot wind turbine, which also supplies enough energy for 125 homes in the local community. A great Monterey pinot where the vines benefit from the cooling winds and fogs from the Pacific. The producer uses an integrated pest management approach, and employs low-impact methods, such as the use of plant-based treatments.
The Society's South African Chenin Blanc, Stellenbosch 2023
Now sporting new Society livery, which alludes to the sustainable farming practices long employed by the Grier family at Villiera, namely pest-eating geese in the vineyards. Old bush-vines - some over 30 years old - provide a richer component to which an earlier-picked proportion is added to lift its bright stone-fruit flavour. It's worth decanting for 20 minutes or so to let it's aromas unfurl.
Ventoux Les Traverses, Paul Jaboulet Aîné 2022
Richly flavoured and fruity but always fresh red from the slopes of Mont Ventoux. Made from majority ripe grenache with syrah in support, it offers a spot-hitting and delicious palate of ripe red berries and a touch of spice.
Undurraga Candelabro Reserva Chardonnay Leyda Valley 2023
Chilean chardonnay with a fresh appley aroma and flavour from the cool Leyda Valley. This has been tank fermented and aged briefly on its yeast lees to confer some richness on the palate.
A Fistful of Schist Reserve Shiraz-Cinsaut-Mourvèdre, Swartland 2023
An exclusive blend for The Wine Society sourced exclusively from older Swartland vines that can handle the warm, dry conditions of this in vogue region. Offering great richness and complexity for the price this is brimming with herbs and spice notes complementing the crunchy bramble and redcurrant fruit. Bottled in the UK to provide even greater freshness and value.
Feudo Arancio Grillo, Sicilia 2023
Easy-going sunny Sicilian grillo showing apricot and pink-grapefruit notes with a touch of saltiness on the refreshing finish, unsurprising for vines growing so close to the sea. This is a great match to Sicilian roasted vegetables. It comes from a region with serious water problems, and the forward-thinking cooperative behind the wine has taken great strides to reduce water usage through, for example, the use of drip irrigation.
