The 2018 Amarone mixed case
This strikes a good balance between the modern and traditional styles of Amarone. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated with Black Forest cherry and mocha notes that linger on the long finish, it’s a delicious wine to pair with rich foods, and it really opens up if decanted an hour or so before being enjoyed.
This complex, traditional Amarone comes from vineyards at 180 degrees exposure (hence the name). Enjoyable in the richness of youth with the aid of a decanter, but there is no rush whatsoever and it will age beautifully. Expect plenty of spice, leather and haunting length on the finish.
Andrea Lonardi’s Amarone is a more modern interpretation of this bighearted style, and his decision to use a little less oak and let the fruit’s natural power take centre stage meant this shone through at our Wine Champions tasting this year. While its freshness was noted, rest assured this Amarone doesn’t skimp on spicy, brambly richness either. A winning combination.
