The Liberator 'God's Own Country Part 2', Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley 2020

3.600000000 star rating 5 Reviews
The undisputed highlight from buyer Matthew Horsley's latest trip to South Africa. Although technically the follow-on vintage to the hugely successful 2017 the blend is entirely different, this time eschewing the savoury syrah-led blend for pure, lightly spiced, finely textured and ethereal grenache. Redcurrant and crushed strawberry dominate the palate with baking spice complexity adding great character. Ideal for lovers of pinot and best enjoyed lightly chilled.

The Liberator

The Liberator is the persona behind a range of limited-edition parcels of wine, sourced from some of South Africa's most exciting and celebrated winemakers, all with their own back story.

It was those winemakers who inspired the project that was to become The Liberator – they and some exceptional wines which otherwise faced the all too common fate of being blended away into obscurity, the right place under any other guise not having been found for them, despite the wine's inherent quality and potential.

The project is the invention of normally perfectly sensible UK wine merchant and Master of Wine, Richard Kelley, with the innovative help of some bright young creatives. We came in already party to information otherwise confidential to the project, and were lucky enough to be in the right place (cellar, actually) at the right time to be able to snap up the very first Special Edition parcels to merit inclusion in The Liberator's eclectic portfolio.

Richard calls these parcels 'vinous orphans' and we have been happy to adopt many of them as limited-edition exclusives. These are always one-off parcels and thus available in limited quantities. Mid crimson. Rich nose with no rough edges. Really exciting GSM with drive, fruit, balance and persistence. Lovely wine with a bit of bottle age. JancisRobinson.com
