The Wine Society’s Generation Series California Merlot 2021

Red Wine
5.000000000 star rating 2 Reviews
We turned to Bogle Vineyards for this California classic to add to our 150th anniversary celebrating Generation Series. They blended this delightful red from their enviable parcels of Lodi and Clarksburg fruit and added a small portion of petite sirah to bring an extra layer of supporting flavour and texture. Aged in American oak barrels for 12 months, the mocha, strawberry and rich blackberry notes are balanced by velvety tannins extending the flavours on the fresh finish. Lovely complexity and concentration at a very friendly price. For a video message from the winemaker, and for more on the story of this wine, please scroll down.

More on the wine

When deciding who to work with on this project, our buyer for USA, Sarah Knowles MW,  wanted to highlight one of her favourite family estates, who, like us have a long history. The Bogle family have been farming this land for six generations, travelling from Tennessee to the Sacramento-San Joaquin delta and settling in Clarksburg in the 1870's, coincidentally around the time of our first exhibition. For the last 50 years, the family farm has focused on grape growing and wine production, chiming with the growing international interest in California wines. Siblings Warren, Jody and Ryan Bogle are now at the helm and are fully committed to a fully sustainable business, with the viticulture certified as such, and with many social outreach projects up and running.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s the march of fantastic quality 'new world', varietally labelled wines boomed. Californian merlot was so popular it even became an easy target for popular movies, though its appeal remained. This wine perfectly shows why, and Jody Bogle has been kind enough to make this blend especially for us. Aged in beautiful American oak barrels (which is rare in-itself as most wineries now use oak alternatives) and with a small proportion of petite sirah, this is more than a simple fruit-led merlot, showing layers of supporting flavours. Most of the fruit comes from the Clarksburg AVA, which is a cooler sub region, contributing to a fresh finish for this generous and rich, plum-laden wine.

In the mid-1960s the Bogles took their century-old family heritage in farming in a new direction and planted their first 20 acres of vines along the banks of the Sacramento River at Clarksburg in California. Thanks to this effort by Warren and Chris Bogle the family was set on a path that has seen them grow in to one of the state’s most noted wineries.

Today, those 20 acres have become more than 1,500 acres and the Bogles are just as closely involved as ever.

Currently the 6th generation of the family are running things in the shape of Ryan and Warren Bogle and Jody Bogle Van de Pol, with Warren, the grandson of the vineyard’s founder, taking care of viticulture across the numerous vineyards they own near their home at Clarksburg as well as others around the state, and reaching as far south as San Luis Obispo halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. All are sustainably farmed. Winemaking is overseen by someone who has his own long history with the Bogles, Eric Aafedt, who has been with them since 1994.
