Thelema Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch 2017

Red Wine from South Africa
4.000000000 star rating 1 Reviews
Impressive successor to the delicious 2015, awarded five Platter stars last year. A refined Simonsberg cabernet, with classical structure honed by its eighteen months in French oak, beautifully balancing cassis and cedar perfume with velvety texture.

Thelema Mountain Vineyards

Thelema Mountain Vineyards is an outstanding illustration of South Africa’s wine renaissance, one of the first estates to make a more modern style of wine to attract a wider international audience. Gyles and Barbara Webb’s beautiful farm is in the Helshoogte Pass, tucked into the southern folds of the Simonsberg, in the Stellenbosch region, and is home to a superbly efficient, modern cellar. Gyles Webb used to be an accountant until, he says, a bottle of Puligny-Montrachet changed his life. His vision, flair and undoubted charm helped Thelema to grow from ramshackle fruit orchards into a South African success story. Family run since 1988, now with son Thomas at the helm, Thelema has something of a cult following.

There are 90 hectares planted on this spectacular 257ha property. The wines are made by celebrated winemaker Rudi Schultz who also makes the Sutherland wines from their cooler-climate Elgin property.

Deep crimson. Appetising and lightly toasty. Mellow fruit and a fine, dry finish. Classic build. Lots of tannin still in evidence. Should appeal to Bordeaux fans. Good value. 16.5/20

From one of the great names of Stellenbosch, and spending eighteen months in French oak (45% new), there's 10% petit verdot in the blend. Filled with mint, cocoa and super-ripe blackcurrant, this is buoyant and crammed with glossy, deep fruit. The palate has that weight and fat of ripeness, sweetness and texture, with a fine backbone of sandy tannin and pert acidity, all layered over polished, cream and high quality oak. 93/100

Star buy: Superbly refined example of Stellenbosch cabernet made from 90% cabernet sauvignon, with 10% petit verdot adding a touch of spice. It has had lengthy barrel ageing in 45% new oak, but oak is so well integrated with generously weighty blackcurrant flavours and smooth soft texture, typical of Thelema’s style.
