Thelema Mountain Vineyards
Thelema Mountain Vineyards is an outstanding illustration of South Africa’s wine renaissance, one of the first estates to make a more modern style of wine to attract a wider international audience. Gyles and Barbara Webb’s beautiful farm is in the Helshoogte Pass, tucked into the southern folds of the Simonsberg, in the Stellenbosch region, and is home to a superbly efficient, modern cellar. Gyles Webb used to be an accountant until, he says, a bottle of Puligny-Montrachet changed his life. His vision, flair and undoubted charm helped Thelema to grow from ramshackle fruit orchards into a South African success story. Family run since 1988, now with son Thomas at the helm, Thelema has something of a cult following.
There are 90 hectares planted on this spectacular 257ha property. The wines are made by celebrated winemaker Rudi Schultz who also makes the Sutherland wines from their cooler-climate Elgin property.
