This is a wine that punches well above its weight in terms of quality and ability to age in bottle. As always, this is predominantly merlot, with small amounts of cabernets sauvignon and franc, and a touch of petit verdot for added spice. Deeply coloured and concentrated with bags of ripe dark fruit on the palate.

Classic, scented merlot-based claret from an ever-reliable source. Fresh and easy to like in a classic Bordeaux vintage, Pitray always reflects its terroir beautifully.
Château Monconseil Gazin, Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux 2020
A scented, harmoniously balanced claret made by the highly regarded Jean-Michel Baudet. Two-thirds merlot with the balance cabernet sauvignon and a splash of malbec for added depth. Superb-value Blaye. As recipients of our 2024 Climate & Nature fund, the château wants to build on its already impressive sustainability credentials by planting nearly 1,000m of new hedgerows around their vineyards. Made up of native shrubs the hedges will create wildlife habitats and absorb carbon from the atmosphere.
