The Society's 150th Anniversary Rioja Reserva 2014
We selected and blended this special Rioja in 2016 from some of Contino's finest fruit. It is about 75% tempranillo with the rest made up of graciano and mazuelo. Contino was the first producer in Rioja to be made from a single vineyard. It has a special location on the banks of the river Ebro and benefits from a warm micro-climate that is reflected in the style of this Rioja which is deeply coloured, full bodied and beautifully structured. It is fragrant with peppery, exotic fruit and a hint of blueberry. The Wine Society has the unique privilege of being the only UK merchant to blend an exclusive wine from this leading fine wine property. Decant in advance to allow all its delightful flavours to unfurl. For more on the story of this wine, please scroll down.
Château Teynac, Saint-Julien 2016
From a small family run property surrounded by famous names such as Beychevelle and Gruaud Larose, this is an impressively refined claret from the outstanding 2016 vintage. Cabernet sauvignon, which dominates the blend, ripened perfectly and is complemented by plump merlot fruit.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Clos du Calvaire 2021
This is a lovely Châteauneuf: ripe, round and designed to give pleasure in its youth. It would be a serious contender for the perfect partner to go with grilled meats, or maybe a richly flavoured dish of Mediterranean vegetables.
Alma de Cattleya Sonoma County Chardonnay 2021
Bibiana González Rave is making some of Sonoma's most exciting wines and, having established Cattleya in 2011, she was announced as the San Francisco Chronicle's winemaker of the year in 2015. The grapes for this wine are from coastal Sonoma in California and retain freshness coupled with lovely ripe orchard-fruit flavours.
Greywacke 'Wild' Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2022
This is a Marlborough sauvignon unlike many others. Fermented in old oak with wild yeasts, this wine has taken on a more complex character, with bold passionfruit and rosemary notes on the nose, a creamy medium body, with peach, melon and savoury flavours on the palate.
Orvieto Classico Superiore Luigi e Giovanna, Barberani 2022
Top-quality Umbrian white by any international standard, with almond-skin, oyster-shell, sage and lemon-rind flavours that last well on the finish. The blend is 90% grechetto (of which 5% was affected by noble rot) and 10% trebbiano procanico.
