Valreas 'Marsanne Resurrection', Clos Bellane 2022

White Wine from France - Rhone
4.000000000 star rating 3 Reviews
Limestone soil and the cooling influences of Alpine foothills make for good conditions to make great white wines, as this tightly constructed marsanne from an up-and-coming estate proves. They seek to challenge perceptions of white Rhône, so think Loire or Burgundy here.

Clos Bellane

Clos Bellane sits above the Vinsobres plateau in the northern part of the southern Rhône, close to Valreas. It’s vines are organically farmed at around 400-metres altitude with a south-east exposure to the sun, producing wines of purity and freshness with lovely poise. The estate, with its panoramic views of the Dentelle Mountains and Mont Ventoux, covers 60 hectares, 48 of which are vineyard, planted with grenache and syrah for reds and roussanne, marsanne and viognier for whites.

Winemaker Stéphane Vedeau bought the property in 2010. The altitude and soils here are perfect for his vision of making Rhône wines of finesse, allowing slow ripening and the retention of acidity in the fruit. He converted the farming regime to an organic one at the earliest opportunity. His minimalist approach to winemaking involves sorting several times to get the best grapes (which he destems), keeping extraction to a minimum to give the terroir the clearest voice possible, using only native yeasts to ferment. Ageing is in concrete eggs, stainless steel and used barrels to avoid masking the purity of the fruit and terroir with wood aromas and flavours, and the conditions of each vintage influence the approach to the winemaking.
