The Wine Society`s Generation Series Marlborough Sauvignon 2023
Marlborough Sauvignon started on its meteoric rise in the late 1980s and has since become one of the most loved wine styles in the world. We have worked with Ben Glover, star winemaker of the region, to produce a special wine to represent this icon within our special 150th Anniversary range. It comes from premium vineyards in the region and demonstrates all the delicious appeal that has led to the incredible popularity of New Zealand`s most successful wine export. It`s impeccably crisp, generous and citrusy; a classy, complete and delicious wine with all the appeal fans of good New Zealand sauvignon rightly expect. Reyneke Organic Syrah, Stellenbosch 2020
Reyneke are global leaders in sustainable viticulture and their organic syrah is a celebration of the quality of fruit that results. Exceptionally pure with aromas of rose, blueberries and cracked black-pepper notes. The palate is finely woven yet generous and will benefit from both decanting and lightly chilling. Reyneke were so persuasive we have agreed to fund two projects through our 2024 Climate & Nature programme. One to support mulching to help preserve a block of old-vine chenin blanc, the second is simply to sponsor a parcel of Reyneke’s land to be rewilded with endemic plant species.
The Wine Society`s Generation Series South African Chenin Blanc, Stellenbosch 2023
Over the past 50 years, South Africa has taken chenin blanc from its home in the Loire Valley and made it their own. Now the most planted grape in the country, it`s been a mainstay in Society Lists for decades. To celebrate Cape chenin we`ve commissioned long-term friends of The Society, Radford Dale, to create a bespoke blend for us to mark our 150th. Using a large proportion of Stellenbosch fruit, this chenin shows typical citrus and stone-fruit flavours with impressive weight and freshness. Worth decanting for 20 minutes or so to allow it the aromas and flavours to unfurl. For a video message from the winemaker, and for more on the story of this wine, please scroll down.
Radford Dale Vinum Sauvignon Blanc, Elgin 2023
Pure and mineral sauvignon blanc from Radford Dale's new organic estate in the cool Elgin region of South Africa. Fermented and matured in concrete eggs to ensure freshness of fruit whilst also improving mouthfeel. Citrus, peach and wet slate dominate this elegant sauvignon. One for Loire lovers over Kiwi exuberance.
Poggio Verde Frascati Superiore, Pallavicini 2023
This Frascati Superiore is a blend of 70% malvasia del Lazio, 15% greco and 15% bombino that has had additional ageing on the yeast lees to add richness to the mouthfeel. It combines a distinctive elderflower and herbal perfume with real body, structure and ripe lemon freshness.
South by South West Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot 2022
Grown by the sea in the Yallingup sub-region of Margaret River by Liv Maiorana and Mij Patterson of South by South West, who were excited about such premium fruit and started making this blend to give it a label to go under. Very low-yielding vines – just two or three bunches on each – produce pristine, concentrated but fresh fruit. This is an almost 50/50 blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot, co-fermented, essentially making it a field blend. The nose is perfumed and elegant, with a small percentage of well-managed carbonic maceration giving a welcome primary red-fruit note. The palate is medium-bodied and pretty, with flavours of plums, cherries, blackcurrants and wild rosemary, accompanied by blueberry, chocolate and a delicious touch of salinity, doubtless from the ocean-side vineyard. A delightfully silky Margaret River red, which can be drunk cellar cool and with or without food.
Coteaux d'Aix en Provence La Source, Château Vignelaure 2023
Lovely, rich-tasting blend of vermentino or rolle as it is known in Provence with a little sauvignon and semillon. Match this dry white with Mediterranean-style dishes like fish soups or grilled bream.
Fitou ‘Les Megalithes', Domaine Bertrand Bergé 2021
This is a cuvée of old vines made mostly from the carignan grape. there is great fruit quality in this vintage, with both weight and freshness.
Bergerac, La Gloire de Mon Père, Château Tour des Gendres 2021
This is a fine, barrel-aged Bergerac made from roughly equal proportions of malbec, cabernet sauvignon and merlot. The 2021 vintage produced wines where the accent is on elegance and lightness of touch.
The Society's Exhibition Langhe Nebbiolo 2021
‘Nebbiolo is rarely this good under £15,` said one taster as this was voted a Wine Champion. ‘Lovely, crunchy cherry fruit – serious wine!` said another. No stranger to Championship victory, this wine is made from young vines in otherwise Barbaresco-certified vineyards, and this quality jumps out in the glass. Perfumed with roses and violets, this is a sultry, spicy Italian classic.
