Verdicchio di Matelica Terravignata, Borgo Paglianetto 2021

0 star rating 0 Reviews
Verdicchio is one of Italy's best dry white wine grapes and those from Matelica, inland and at higher altitude, tend to have full flavour and a little more 'bite' than those from Jesi nearer the coast. This is an excellent organic example with nectarine, chalk, citrus oil and jasmine notes. Look to sea bass, bream or other fine fish for a food match.

Borgo Paglianetto

Founded as recently as 2003, Borgo Paglianetto have come a long way in a short space of time. The 25 hectare estate lies a couple of kilometres north of the small town of Matelica. Most of the vineyards are at 400-450 metres above sea level on the chalky clay slopes that surround the modern purpose-built winery. The winery converted to organic farming as of the 2014 harvest.

The main focus is Verdicchio, produced mainly from west facing vineyards and fermentation is carried out in stainless steel at coolish temperatures, so that the purity of aroma and flavour remain undiminished. The wines show remarkable freshness and energy and the classic steely acidity and 'mineral' tones that distinguish Matelica wines from those of Castelli di Jesi.
