Vergelegen Estate V Red Vertical Case

0 star rating 0 Reviews
Vergelegen’s ‘V’ is one of the world’s most famous Bordeaux blends, taken from a single vineyard called Stone Pine IV located on a north-west facing slope at the foot of the Schaapenberg. The wines are typically powerful but with outstanding freshness and structure thanks to the influence of False Bay. This three-vintage vertical provides the unmissable opportunity to taste this iconic wine throughout its evolution, including the 2006, 2011 and 2012 vintages.

Vergelegen Estate V Red, Stellenbosch 2006

There’s no denying that Vergelegen’s V is an impressive wine – one that has all the bells and whistles and isn’t afraid to flaunt its power and generosity. The 2006 is fully mature and has everything you could want from a flagship Cape cabernet sauvignon – cigar box and smoke on the nose with menthol and dried blackcurrants on the palate alongside sweet chunky tannins and outstanding cedar and spice notes from high-quality new oak. A beauty.

Vergelegen Estate V Red, Stellenbosch 2011

A much cooler and elegant style of V was made in 2011, with distinct blue rather than black fruit that’s still very much in the ascendency. The tannins are still firm and mouthcoating, needing an hour or two in the decanter to soften, but patience will be rewarded with great aromatics and classically framed body. One for food but a real treat for lovers of claret.

Vergelegen Estate V Red, Stellenbosch 2012

The 2012 V is a real showstopper, a wine that’ll make you sit up and take notice. The nose leaps out of the glass with sweet spices, cassis and hints of graphite and a gloriously bright hue. The palate is luxurious and silky with powerful yet fully integrated tannins and new oak opulence. A whopper but all the better for it!
