Winter Savings Mixed Dozen
A lovely fruity chardonnay from outside Carcassonne in the south of France, where the slightly cooler climate allows the grapes to flourish. Pennautier is the outstanding estate in this area.
Easy-going sunny grillo from western Sicily, showing apricot and grapefruit notes with a touch of saltiness on the refreshing finish, unsurprising for vines growing so close to the sea.
Ecológico means organic, which is how this parcel of Spanish monastrell (aka mourvèdre) is managed. This is full-bodied and concentrated with generous black fruit and spice flavours.
The ribolla gialla grape, most often to be found in north-east Italy, offers a characterful tangy dry white with notes of lime, almond, peach skin and preserved lemon. It pairs wonderfully with food, from simple salads to roast pork.
A healthy ripe vintage, this cabernet franc has dark but fresh fruit and appetising lift on the palate. This Loire red is made without oak to better respect the quality and integrity of the cabernet franc grape - the only variety grown on the estate and the only variety allowed for the appellation.
Ripe, fruity grenache-syrah Rhône blend from an outstanding producer in Vinsobres. The colour has depth and the nose is beautifully marked by raspberry and redcurrant fruit. There is nothing heavy here, just loads of vibrant fruit.
This is supplied to us by Languedoc producer Domaine du Bosc, whose diversity of grape varieties allows them to play to the strengths of the vintage in this part of France. Aromatic, and delightful, with a light touch.
The top wine from one of the outstanding estates of the Languedoc. distinguishes Cabardès from the rest is the choice of varieties, which has to include both Bordeaux and Rhône grapes. The result is dark and truffle-like, with the polish that comes from long barrel ageing.
Grechetto is Umbria’s premier white wine grape, giving an elegant dry wine with bright lemon pith, flaked almond and lime notes. Elegant and subtle, and made from organically grown grapes, this Italian white develops delightfully in the glass rather than hitting you in the face at the first sip!
From the south-west of France comes this second wine from one of Madiran's top estates, made using 100% tannat grapes and aged in oak barrel for just over a year. The style is true Madiran with plenty of grip and bold, dark flavours that make a perfect match with roast beef.
Serious but deliciously approachable (and beautifully presented) pale South African pink from Stellenbosch in a food-friendly southern French style.
