Wonders of the Wine World
The best Pichon Lalande in recent history, and an outstanding left-bank wine of the vintage. Winemaker Nicolas Glumineau believes his cabernet has rarely displayed so much density and depth. It makes up 68% of the blend, alongside 29% merlot and the rest cabernet franc and petit verdot. Elegant and balanced, with an almost creamy texture on the finish.
From shallow soil and good plant material, this is made from pinot tordu, a pinot noir clone with small yields and twisted, gnarled vines. The small amount of fruit produced is packed full of intense complexity, producing a wine with a fine perfume and an exquisite palate.
From one of the Rhône’s iconic producers, the granitic lieu-dit Les Bessards has produced something of a monster. Massively concentrated and densely packed and built to last a lifetime. Definitely one for laying down, or decant for a couple of hours if you can't resist it. Please note that the drinking window shown in the Fine Wine Collection brochure should show '2027 to 2040', and not 'Now to 2040' as printed.
Louis Jadot is an icon for a reason. Powerful and ripe wine with a broad, firm and fleshy palate from the south-facing Pougets vineyard near Aloxe-Corton. This is a wine that will age for a decade more – buy it as a Christmas gift or invest in a future Christmas.
Henschke’s ‘second wine’ is a truly special bottle: an age-worthy red that is testament to the quality of Australian fine wine. Complex notes of earth and cassis, with spicy lifted pepper and soy. The palate is rich, full and approachable now, with ample ripe tannins, focused acidity and huge generosity of fruit.
One of the finest traditionally-framed Riojas, gran reserva gets no better than this. A wine of great refinement, depth and complexity with flavours that evolve continuously in the glass. Plums, red fruit and tobacco combine to make this intriguing yet completely brilliant wine.
