"Very pleasant, classically food friend friendly Italian red.
Thanks for the discovery WS !"
Mr Roddy Wallace (21-Mar-2020)
"Certainly full-flavoured. Cherries from the sangiovese but with a sharp rustic edge from, presumably, the sagrentino, a grape previously unknown to me but which, I read, has one of the highest tannic levels of any grape variety. The merlot doesn't do much taming, to my taste. Overall, an interesting, even challenging wine which will reward the adventurous. Great value too. I look forward to trying the 2011 by way of comparison."
Mr Stuart Paterson (24-Dec-2019)
"A great example Wine Society buying. Loads of us have had Chianti or Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, but who has had a wine from Montefalco? I had to look up where this region actually is: it turns out it's from Umbria, next door to Tuscany and I'd say this has the most in common with Chianti: the same juicy acidity. Equally, it's got a grape called sagrantino as part of the blend, and I've never even heard of that before.
It's full bodied, but still fresh. It won't make your weekend, but it's very enjoyable; approachable enough for people who like Chianti; different enough to attract someone looking for something a bit off piste.
Good value; not amazing value. Like a good to very good Chianti, but you knock off three quid from the price because it's from a more obscure region."
Rev Robert Stanier (04-Nov-2019)
"The aromas are vivid and constantly changing, but include candied cherry, rhubarb and custard boiled sweets: oddly sweet and slightly sappy aroma at times. Brief and faint hints of banana. Wakens up to blueberry, earthiness, black pepper. On the palate it's overwhelmingly sour cherries with high acidity. A slightly bitter and rustic finish, with flavours fading quickly. Sometimes clearly Sangiovese, sometimes almost reminiscent of a pinot noir. "

Country Life (2nd Oct 2019)
"Medium deep ruby red
in colour, with a tarry earthy nose and considerable authority, acidity and
bite. The contribution of the powerful local grape, sagrantino, is only 15% but
makes its presence felt. - Harry Eyres"

"I was at Scacciadiavoli last week and this is a lovely wine. Meanwhile, looking forward to 2016, which is 60% Sangiovese, 25% Merlot and 15% Sagrantino. Given the Italian price, I think the Wine Society do very well to sell this at £12.95 given distribution costs and the UK duty and tax rates. I think WS should be bringing in Their other wines as well"
Mr Paul Howard (30-Oct-2018)
"Am currently in Umbria enjoying this wine immensely. It is a big wine but is harmoniously put together and thus is a perfect accompaniment to sausage, grilled meat, porcini mushroom risotto etc. In Umbria it can be obtained for €9 - €11. £12.95 seems a bit steep."

Decanter (1st Jan 2019)
"A deep, layered and
concentrated example, this has lots of structure, tannins, firm grip and older
oak character to complement the dark red cherry fruits. Quite drying in the mouth,
this is a wine to enjoy with rich meat dishes: great with roasted red meats. - Andy Howard"
The Daily Telegraph (29th Sep 2018)
"A characterful blend
of sangiovese, sagrantino and merlot. The sagrantino grape provides earthy base
notes, above which lie the red fruits and perfume of sangiovese. Beautiful with
grouse. - Hamish Anderson"
