2018 VINTAGE - MEMBER REVIEWS
Mr George Leach (07-Jan-2021)
"Grignan-les-Adhémar is the AOC that used to be called Côteaux du Tricastin.
The wines can vary in quality and some are heavier than others. This is one of the bigger ones and the quality level is high too. It needs time to breathe so that the lovely bramble fruit flavours can develop, but it is worth the wait.
I've drunk it with a griddled steak with garlic butter, sausages and mash with onion gravy and by itself and it stands up perfectly to food as well as being a nice wine to drink while watching a film.
Overall, a terrific all-rounder. I'd tell everyone to buy it, except if they did, there wouldn't be any left for me."
Ms Carole Flint (01-Oct-2020)
"Very enjoyable. Particularly good with roast duck, especially after opening for a couple of hours."
Father David Lawrence-March (31-Aug-2020)
"Not impressed with this for the price. It isn't a particularly pleasant flavour and overly tannic, more interesting wines available for this region at a similar or lower price bracket."
Mr Thomas Darbyshire (15-Aug-2020)
"Delas AOC at £8.50 a bottle? Can’t go wrong, right? Wrong. Starts off closed and stalky and then with a lot of air finally shows some prune and spice, but you really have to look for it. Thin and short. I’ve had many better southern Rhônes at this price. Bad bottle? Maybe but I only bought one so I’ll never know! "
Mr Rupert Fairclough (22-Jul-2020)
"A very decent wine - medium bodied, rich in fruit and spice and well worth having 3+ in the cellar
A deep nose leads to forest floor and liquorice notes along with blackberry, red cherry, blackcurrant, plum and vanilla with a touch of cinnamon and toast
The palate has a smooth berry flavour and a white pepper and red currant twist"
Mr Hugo Allen-Stevens (11-Jun-2020)
"Thoroughly enjoyed it before we ate. Enjoyed it with our barbeque of various meats. Enjoyed it with the cheese course. Don't try it rhubarb crumble."
Mr Andrew Thompson (31-May-2020)
"I agree with Mr Potts. There is nothing complicated here. At this price it is a great buy. Just consumed with lasagne and it did the job. Ordering another case as it is reliable. Like a Grenache Syrah artisan wine? Buy this one. You get what you pay for."
Mr Derek Moran (19-May-2020)
"Good. Young , bistro standard cote de rhone. Ignore the b.s. about fine flavour, concentration and complexity because its none of that... What it IS is a good everyday reliably enjoyable c.d.r. and you can't go wrong with that.
"
Mr Tim Potts (16-May-2020)
"We bought 6 bottles. 4 were fine and we would agree with the positive comments below whilst adding that it does offer good value for money when in good condition.
Unfortunately, two bottles were slightly corked which may explain the 2* rating that we’ve seen from other reviewers.
"
Philip J Perkins Esq (16-May-2020)
"Straightforward uncomplicated and very smooth easy drinking. As stated in Robert Purry's review, goes well with steak. Will reorder."
Dr Robert Feltham (19-Apr-2020)
"I read that the Society's Rhone buyer thinks the Jaboulet at £8.95 is the best value in his range. I have bought both: I'm no expert but for me this is better when comparing 2018's. Just lovely. "
Mr Martin Burgess (06-Apr-2020)
"Really disappointed. Short, some bouquet of wood and prunes but took a while to come through. Opened half an hour before drinking and drunk on its own and with burgers. First glass pit was sharp, second better. Couldn't even finish my glass, will have to go in the cooking. Was hoping this wine after promotion by the Society in its own right and more recent wine buyer recommendations might be a replacement for the no longer listed but excellent Guigal Cote du Rhone. Not a chance."
Mr Charles Stokes (03-Mar-2020)
"I enjoyed it. Smooth, nice fruit smell but not too much, matched by taste and a good sense of body to it. Bottle disappeared quickly"
Mr Pete White (16-Feb-2020)
"Bought as part of a Taste of Rhone offer
Tasty and easy to drink on it's own but great food also
Good value at £8"
Mr Steven Foster (15-Feb-2020)
Mr Matthew Robinson (07-Feb-2020)
"Deep purple crimson. I thought it was a bit closed up still, even on second night, will see if third night is more forthcoming. Some roasted, almost burnt fruit on the palate suggesting a little over extracted maybe. Not too tannic though, indeed quite smooth. A heavier more brooding style than previous vintages that I've had.
I suspect it might benefit from another year in bottle. "
Mr Mark Colman (20-Nov-2019)
"My third vintage. The quality is consistent across all 3. Great value at the price. Medium bodied and a deep purple hue.
Black fruit, white pepper and spice with just a hint of fig.
"
Mr Tom Rodger (15-Nov-2019)
"I'm no connoisseur but I would say that this is better than the Society's Cotes du Rhone. Smooth and medium bodied. Lovely with Steak."
Mr Robert Purry (28-Oct-2019)

… decadently rich, full-bodies and impressively
aromatic … Ripe muscular blackberry flavours, a warm smoky palate and a

white pepper. Great for roasted red meats and hearty cheeses, this is one of
the best entry-level Rhônes I've had in a long time. - Giles Luckett"

notches. - Jane Clare"
Yorkshire Post (15th Feb 2020)
"In 2010 this Rhône
region's name changed from Coteaux de Tricastin to Grignan-Les Adhémar and
sales have been slow ever since. That is why wine is so packed with blackberry
and dark cherry fruit, yet priced so affordably. - Christine Austin"
Western Mail (15th Feb 2020)
"… another
excellent-value gem in The Wine Society portfolio. The wine carries the
unmistakable colour of a Rhône red with that deep purple hue. The blend of
grenache and syrah results in aromas of deep black berry fruit with a little
spice drifting in, adding depth. In the mouth the fruit has a savoury spice
tone to it, but there is a juicy note that keeps things bimbling along nicely.
Tannins are there but nicely integrated and don't dominate the mouthfeel. It
dries out across the finish and shows a little inkiness as it breathes. Crack
this open with a nice bit of steak or roast beef and it's all you need on a
winter's eve to keep all that nasty weather away. - Neil Cammies"
Manchester Evening News (14th Feb 2020)
"It doesn't come
better than this for Rhône wines at this sort of price. This particular
appellation, which changed its name so as not to be associated with a nuclear
power station, takes some of the best qualities from both the northern and
southern Rhône. There's a lightness of touch and freshness in the crunchy
blackberry fruit but there's power too and a pleasing liquorice edge to the
finish. - Andy Cronshaw"

The Press Association (12th Feb 2020)
"With a solid core of
crunchy blackberry and cherry fruit, and a lovely perfume of blackberry fruit,
this intensely fruity red is fabulously smooth, highlights the vintage’s
essential ripeness and with its embossed coat of arms, looks and tastes the
part. From the northern end of the southern Rhone, if you had to put it into
two words, Delas is downright delicious. - Sam Wylie Harris"
midweekwines.co.uk (12th Feb 2020)
"Here is one great
value option from [the Rhône 2018] promotion. Dark and complex, this has bright
and smooth black cherry, plum and loganberry fruit with firm tannin, a savoury
backdrop that also includes touches of clove, eucalyptus and black pepper but –
despite its ripeness – good acidity too.
These guys are sited at the northern end of the Southern Rhone – which,
presumably, is why there is no (heat loving) mourvèdre in the blend – and thus
may have escaped the worst of the weather. They also have vineyards in the
Northern Rhone and, hence, may have particular expertise with syrah. - Brian Elliott"
Yorkshire Post (23rd Nov 2019)
"This appellation used
to be called Coteaux du Tricastin and it still hasn’t regained its popular
appeal since the name change. But the flavours are still there, with
broad, plummy fruit and just a sprinkle of spice. Saturday night drinking at
Wednesday night prices. - Christine Austin"

Mr Richard Fifield (19-Sep-2019)
"I am more of a New World drinker to be honest, but I have ordered this 3xtimes and find it very enjoyable. Very smooth and pleasant aftertaste."
Mr Michael Marshall (02-Jul-2019)
"Great value. Plenty of black fruit with spice and pepper finish. Very nice and highly recommended for the price. "
Mr Tom Rodger (22-Jun-2019)
"First time encounter perchance recent Wines Without Fuss delivery.
Very pleasant fullness of taste put it immediately on my wish list for the future."
Mr Graham Howard (13-May-2019)
"I wouldn't rave about it like some other reviewers, but it is a good rhone and keenly priced to boot."
Mr Peter Jinks (04-May-2019)
"I tried this based on the member reviews.
A superb wine. Just the right amount of berry fruits and spice from the Syrah.
I think this will be a regular for me too now."
Mr Martin Wingate (02-Apr-2019)
Mr Geoffrey Tong (31-Mar-2019)
"Thin, sour, tannic. The most significant fault is the gap between fruit, tannin and alcohol, the latter wafting unpleasantly above the nose at every sip. There are better CDRs around the same price point. Couldn't recommend."
Mr John Carr (28-Mar-2019)
"Bottom line: unbeatable value for money with remarkable consistency vintage after vintage. This excellent Rhone is an ever-present feature in my cellar for a variety of reasons. First, I love drinking it - grenache and syrah with unparalleled finesse at this extraordinary price point. So great to have such a lovely, universally drinkable, affordable wine available to open without a second thought. Secondly, it is the ultimate dinner party red. It pairs brilliantly with everything on our typical menus - punchy sea food, rare red meats, flavourful fish, heady cheese at room temperature. Thirdly, turn up to your friends' knees-ups with a couple of bottles of this and cement your place at the top of all subsequent invite lists. Thirdly, it seems to be a really well-kept WS secret, so no-one else has ever seen, heard of, or indeed, tasted it. So when you produce a bottle with a flourish and its contents is raved about by all, as it will be, you can be satisfied that providing this kind of pleasure to others cost you substantially less than £10 when everyone else assumes it was twice that. "
Mr David Turner (03-Mar-2019)
"I have been drinking this wine for many years and it has become a firm favourite.
Excellent Rhone wine at a very good price."
Mr David Mansell (19-Feb-2019)
"A Syrah with youth, balanced acidity and plenty of fruit. Best if aerated for a couple of hours. For every day drinking this is an excellent choice."
Mr Marcelo Pugliese (14-Dec-2018)
"Decent nose, initial flowers and ?blackberry on the palate (I hadn't read the wine notes when I wrote that), and enough fruit without excess. Opened after rejecting a half-used Sabina Tempranillo as I felt I needed a good rich Rhone to cheer me up with my mutton. Well worth the extra £2 or so. Very good value - one could pay 60 per cent more for a grander southern Rhone name and not have as much fun. No wonder it's a Members Favourite."
Dr Christopher Currie (26-Nov-2018)
"Disappointing. It’s young and reasonably priced. But it’s too acidic and there’s a tonne of harsh tannin. Perhaps it’ll mellow overnight. Perhaps a dash of port will render it drinkable."
Mr Kevin Barry (24-Oct-2018)
"Still a great value wine and reliable, I think I have had the last 4 vintages of this wine and keep coming back to it - worth trying if you haven't already."

"Pleasant fruity wine No exciting characteristics but good value though there are better wines in the Society range at similar prices. "
Mr Colin Mitchell (17-Jun-2018)
"Delicious. Drank it without any idea how much it had cost, and assumed it was about a tenner. Went beautifully with steak and garlic butter, and on its own afterwards. Lighter in body than some Rhone wines. Will definitely buy again.
"
Mrs Nicola Hill (22-May-2018)
"Underwhelming, given the hype and the vintage. I agree with those below in that it offers next to nothing on the nose. Some nice Rhone dusty notes mingling with some red fruits but far too much astringency from there on in, and the fruit is very weak. At this price point I would recommend the Domaine de l'Ameillaud, Orange Vaucluse 2016, far better depth of fruit and balance."
Mr William Wyatt (09-Mar-2018)
"What a surprise! Light with not much body but simply a delight. Great price and value and set to become a staple at our house. Very happy with the quality."
Mr Gavin Webb (03-Mar-2018)
"I loved this red when it was known as Coteaux du Tricastin. It is my go to cold weather wine. Dry garrigue herbs , soft black pepper, smooth dark tannins....one minor hitch. I find it very difficult not to overdo the quantity."
Mr Alan E Sullivan (24-Feb-2018)
"The 2016 vintage is full, fruity and drinkable and if left open to develop for an hour or so, is seriously drinkable and quaffable - superb value
Love this wine"
Mr Paul Newey (21-Feb-2018)
"This wine has fast become a staple at home. It can easily be paired with any meal or enjoyed on its own.
It has enough substance to satisfy any red wine lover as well as being light enough to please irregular red wine drinkers. All in all, great value."
Mr Lorenz Frenzen (05-Jan-2018)
"Not a lot on the nose but a full fruit driven flavour and some length plus enough acidity to make this a good food wine as well as quaffing on its own, good value."
Mr John Wigglesworth (19-Dec-2017)
"While the initial nose is not so promising, a bit of air (double decanting and then left for an hour) makes all the difference. While not hugely refined or complex, this is full bodied, tasty and simply excellent value. It does seem like it’s hard to go too wrong with 2016 Rhône."

"Great value. Dark fruit forward, easy to like. Everything I want from this level of the Southern Rhone. Decant to open this up and remove the fine sediment. Perfect wine for autumnal weather. Really happy with this. "
Mr Martin J Whalley (06-Oct-2019)
"Excellent value wine, light in alcohol and easy drinking, fresh and fruity, but I found it difficult to pin down different elements and like wise the nose was just 'fruity', very good everyday drinking."
Mr John Wigglesworth (10-Mar-2018)
"Better today than before, and that's saying a lot!
At this price, a stupendous bargain.
At this level it just shows the benefit of a little more bottle age and a vigorous decanting!?!"

"A really enjoyable quality wine at an excellent price"
Mr Liam Collopy (30-Jul-2017)
"Initially a bit medicinal but given a bit of breathing improves, good with food wine, for those used to new world fruit bombs this is a very European style, on the dry side."
Mr John Wigglesworth (25-Jul-2017)
"Excellent value and well worth buying. Definite kick of pepper and plenty fruit."
Mr Gordon Allan (18-Apr-2017)
"Very drinkable. Plum and distinctly black pepper. Medium long finish. Needs a bit more time."
Mr Peter Nelson (29-Mar-2017)
"Bought a couple of bottles after reading all the exciting reviews. Notes of aromatic and dark strawberries on the nose, with hints of white and black pepper. Sweet intake, full-bodied with sufficient acid to support the fresh minty fruit. Thoroughly enjoyed it!"
Mr Clint Wong (24-Mar-2017)
"great value - an absolute stunner"
Mr Christopher Woodhead (01-Mar-2017)
"Gorgeous, far better than a glugable red at a ludicrously low price. Served with a rack of lamb, it went down a treat and I got the somewhat undeserved plaudits . Totally recommendable from a top Rhone producer!!"
Soorat Singh Esq (19-Feb-2017)
"I really enjoyed this wine. I tend to be suspicious of many French wines at this price and head towards the South American wines instead. To me this is fruity, brambly wine and it has lovely, soft lingering notes in the mouth. Would buy again."
Mr Michael Riley (12-Jan-2017)
"Good value but not in my view as special as other reviewers maintain."
Neil Butter Esq (24-Nov-2016)
"Good Cote du Rhone from a very promising vintage. Dark and red fruits balanced nicely with smooth tannins and soft acidity. Really good value wine that could be kept for a few years."
Mr Marcus Goodwin (19-Nov-2016)
""You never told me you had bought a Chateauneuf du Pape and a really good one at that" was the first comment. Of course we are still novices at French reds but will not hesitate to serve to those who profess a finer palate. Totally agree with Mr Mitchell's tasting notes and have reordered in good quantity.Really is an absolute steal at this price."
Mr Keith G Napier (15-Aug-2016)
"Having tried the 2014 vintage this new vintage is still very good and ridiculous value at this price, vibrant fruit initially which then evolves into darker fruit flavours with a slightly spicy finish - highly recommended!"

bargain as we have reported before, even if the price has gone up a touch for
