Join Tim Sykes as he explains, compares and contrasts two claret vintages hitting their stride this year - 2015 and 2011.
Tim, the Wine Society’s buyer for Bordeaux, will delve into the nuances of each vintage, explaining the weather and the resulting wines with a nod to when to drink them (now if you want to!) and what to drink them with.
After the driest spring in the Medoc since 1949, the weather in 2011 continued to surprise everyone. But the best winemakers produced fantastic wines, with a little less guts than 2009 and 2010 but with delicacy and sophistication.
As for the 2015s, Tim explained that ‘some French wine experts use the word ‘peps’ to describe wines with energy and vitality, and it is a word that neatly captures the essence of 2015’. Often described as one of the best vintages for a number of years, this is a year that still has plenty of potential to age but is drinking wonderfully now.
This is the perfect event for anyone who is already sitting on these vintages; for anyone who is considering buying them; or for any member who would like to learn a little more about vintage variation and the world of Bordeaux.
No specific wines are needed for this event, just a thirst for knowledge. But if you do wish to taste with Tim and enjoy some of the examples he is talking about, we will cover the below:
