"Best Champagne, People's Choice Drinks Awards: With noteworthy early
exuberance, [this Champagne] impressed the judges with the excellent way its
zesty grapefruit acidity combines with the red apple backbone and the gentle
yeasty backdrop that also contains hints of almond biscuits. - Brian Elliott"

OK,
not the cheapest champagne but one offering a delightful balance and
sophistication that fully justifies paying a little more.
With early exuberance and long creamy texture, The Society’s Champagne builds on those attributes with ripe lemon
and apple flavours, zesty grapefruit acidity, and a gentle backdrop contain
neat suggestions of almond biscuits. - Brian Elliott"

Very
handily available in half-bottles. Made for The Wine Society by the highly
regarded producer, Alfred Gratien, this is a blend of all three classic
Champagne grapes. Relatively unusually, the fermentation is carried out in
small oak barrels, it has a really inviting bouquet of citrus and hazelnuts
along with some toasty notes followed by a nicely textured palate with lively
acidity and a persistent finish. A lovely aperitif but would also work with
fresh seafood, and oysters in particular. - Alistair Gibson"

"The Wine Society has
been buying Alfred Gratien Champagne for over 100 years. Made with great
attention to detail in small oak barrels, it is aged for at least three years,
giving extra depth, complexity and length of flavour. - Richard Esling"

"Best value wines for
Christmas and the New Year: Fermented in oak casks this wine gets a good deal
more time in bottle than many celebrated names and boasts a rich, spicy,
savoury style that works both as a great pick me up and with the right sort of
food: savoury fishy canapés. - Giles Fallowfield"

"This is all about big
flavours: brown apples, nuts and spicy notes. If, like me, you love Bollinger
Champagne but can’t afford it, this is the wine for you. The producer, Alfred
Gratien, is one of the few houses along with Bollinger that still age their wines
in oak. - Henry Jeffreys"

"This is a fantastic
own-label Champagne from the Wine Society, made by Alfred Gratien with his
distinctive style: fermenting and aging his wines in oak barrels for added
depth, concentration and nuttiness. There’s a lovely mix of light oak
savouriness with a burst of honeyed fruit on the mid-palate, dissolving to a
long, dry finish. There are well-rounded flavours with a steely, unflagging
acidity. This tension is maintained throughout, making it a brilliant choice
for a lengthy evening of entertaining. - Nuria Stylianou"

"Like other luxury
goods, champagne is heavily promoted, and with the big brands, that’s what
you’re paying for. Is Krug at £126 fourteen times better than Tesco’s Louis
Delaunay, which was recently on offer at £9? Not for most of us, no, even if we
could afford it. A case of the Wine Society’s own-label Champagne (12.5 abv) is
a better deal than both: like Krug, it is aged in oak and you can order until
midnight on Tuesday at the equivalent of £19.67 a bottle, saving yourself £59
in the process.- Fiona Beckett"

With
the richness of roast chicken and its crispy skin, not to mention the gravy,
a house that is known for richer styles is a brilliant choice for this dish.
Step forward Champagne houses that use oak barrels when making their wine,
because even though there might not be oaky flavour (there usually isn't) it
still gives the wine extra oomph and concentration in the mouth. Even better,
whether its potato dauphinoise or good old-fashioned roasties accompanying,
the classic freshness of Champagne will also be great at cutting through the
extra flavour of pimped up potatoes.

"The Wine Society has
been buying sparkling wine from Epernay champagne house Alfred Gratien for more
than 100 years. Its own-label champagne is considerably more serious than one
might imagine, with a fine, delicate, butter-biscuity nose blending with white
spring blossoms and strawberry syllabub. The crisp and fresh palate is infused
with star anise and the essence of baked lemon. The Champagne has a remarkably
rich and dense intensity of flavour. - Sally Easton"
