"A superb amontillado, beautifully balanced and with terrific depth of flavour. Just enjoyed it with paella and it was ‘just like being there’. An absolute bargain too. Off to order some more now."

"Very great impact when first on the palate - a pretty dry note but very full, with a longish aftertaste. Well impressed by this and quite different from the 'Jose'"

"A superb wine, all you might expect from a medium dry Amontillado, real complexity and a long finish. A perfect accompaniment to salted almonds and a good book at the end of the day."

"A fantastic sherry, and even better VFM. There's lots going on here, both on the nose and palate - all in a good way. My wife and I struggle to resist topping up our glasses, and our best intentions disappear all too quickly. Bit like the contents of the bottle! "

"The Wine Society's description is spot on. I can see that for some, looking for a clean and simple taste, the complexity, weight and salt-caramel taste tones might be overpowering or off-putting; but if you are looking for "layer upon layer of diverse, delicious flavours and is a steal at the price" then you've found it all right. It has a resounding finish."

"A really excellent amontillado - especially at this price. Hazelnut and citrus flavours on the nose. A good dollop of vinyl acetate, and lovely wood aromas.
On the palate, really nice attack and acidity. A bit of a saline note, and a little caramel, not not too much of either. Roast hazelnuts. On the drier side of medium, which is great. The acidity definitely cuts through this wine and lifts it. Very long and mouth watering finish. I can’t remember having a better value for money Amontillado. "

"Sensational stuff! My first case from the Wine Soc & I see what the fuss is all about! I love manzanilla but have avoided anything less dry due to traumatic childhood experiences with aunties & crofts original. But this sweetish dry nectar is a revelation of complexity that goes perfectly as an aperitif or even digestif with cheese. Very moorish & hard to resist. Yes it will keep if you dont drink it, but the serious complexity in the length seems to reduce considerably after a week."

"I see I reviewed this 6 years ago - I loved it then, and I love it even more now. It has become a reliable old friend. Always pleasing, surprising and forgiving. I usually have a bottle in the fridge, and it keeps wonderfully well when open - 6-8 weeks and it loses nothing. Warming, refreshing, reassuring. Like a sharper Worther's original in liquid form. A dash in a chicken casserole adds a splash of magic too."

"Love this sherry. Ordered with one of my first cases and keep coming back to it...in fact because it's so good and so reasonably priced I haven't experimented much further. I order two per case otherwise it runs out before I'm ready to order more wines!"

"Just getting into sherry and so am exploring the different types, I found that a fino was a bit too dry for my liking whereas the Oloroso sherries I have tried are quite powerful. I found that this sherry was the best of both, slight sweetness to start with some freshness as well as caramel/toffee apple, but then turns drier with a great nutty taste and a long finish. There is some great complexity to this sherry, I can however see what is meant by there being 2 halves, there is a slight delay between the initial flavours of toffee and the roasted nutty taste on the finish. This sherry seems to be something I keep going back for more though and will be adding it to my next purchase."

"This bottle came with a screw-top, but I don't think this was why I was disappointed with the drink. The taste was very much of 2 halves and did not seem blended or balanced, and rather harsh. It will not get thrown out, but may have to accompany some chorizo! 4 out of 10."

"This sherry is unbelievable value for money. It has a deep colour and an amazing sweet salty caramel coated macadamia nut flavour. Slightly crude on the edges but that is in comparison to much more expensive sherries. It would be churlish to focus on that. This sherry is punching well above its weight. Congratulations to The Wine Society sherry buyer, another fantastic selection. This will become a regular purchase."

"I've just opened a bottle of Romate Maribel Armontillado and I must say I was disappointed. Not dry enough for my taste although it does live up to the tasting comments on the website. So I was about to tell you I didn't like it and please could I have my money back when my wife who has the most fantastic taste buds suggested that I make one of my favourite cocktails-vodka and dry-. Fantastic in spades..I mean really fabulous and although it will take a long time to finish the bottle(you don't put much sherry in the drink, just a teaspoonful) I will persist with it and order some other sherry to drink on it's own. Manzanillas are my favourites."

"On my third bottle of this magnificent wine. On the nose it's still wet varnish on mahogany, which follows through to the mouth filling taste (aided by 19% alcohol!). Sweetness as well, although it finishes fully dry. Must be the best value on the list."

"A little sweeter on the palate than my favourite amonitallado -- Hidalgo's Napoleon, which has a bone dry finish, this nevertheless has a nice cut of green flavours running through it, which makes it much less cloying than many a "medium" amontillado. Really The Wine Society is to be congratulated on their sherry range.

"Very good indeed - spicy, complex, to my mind just the right balance . Dry finish is regrettably rather short, but unbeatable at the price point. In my opinion for anything better one would have to spend 2.5 times as much, perhaps on a palo cortado."

"A fresh, appley nose, with hazelnuts and hints of yeast and sea breeze, I'd say "nail varnish remover", if that didn't sound so unpleasant. The palate is saltier, nuttier and yeastier than the nose suggests, it's savoury and tasty, with light to medium body, a little astringency and a medium to long finish of hazelnuts, almonds, roasted flavours."

"There is no point pretending that this is as good as the La Botaina for it isn't, but it is still an excellent wine. It is also four quid cheaper and at this price, it is an ideal aperativo for any night of the week. It is moving towards the sweeter end of an Amontillado, but it is in no way cloying: there is a lovely balance and sense of harmony between the acidity and the sweetness. It is a little smokey, rich with hazlenuts and is a very enjoyable drink. I can only hope the world continues to ignore sherry so we can all enjoy such excellent wines at such reasonable prices."
