2018 VINTAGE - MEMBER REVIEWS
"Sorry but I found an undertaste of what I suppose Brasso tastes of.
Another 9 bottles to go ........
Never had an issue with WS claret before."
Mr Andrew J Hodder (10-Dec-2020)
"ice, solid, fruity, mellow, good staple"
Mr James Bowkett (08-Nov-2020)
"Nice, medium body, fresh, with some soft tannins, typical Bordeaux wine with savoury notes as opposed to the more fruity New World Cab/Merlot wines. Good value, daily wine for those who like Bordeaux style."
Mr Joseph Barisci (30-Oct-2020)
"Certainly goes down easily but I found the taste flat and uninteresting . A pity because the Societies brand should be the best of a regions cheap wine. This needs renewing."
Dr Declan Dwyer (09-Sep-2020)
"I haven’t tried the society’s claret a while, having been working my way through better clarets bough en primeur , and after the gloomy reviews in recent years I expected to be disappointed. On the contrary, I was pleasantly surprised. Quite fruity; Not thin, on opening, but seemed lighter the second time approached. But still well balanced and enjoyable. A wine that keeps for a few days after openings like this one is important for me. It’s still very good value for the money, and makes me wonder why I bother with more expensive ones - the quality edge is not as great as the price difference. I used to enjoy Argentine Malbec and Aussie Shiraz but frankly the low priced ones are boring and this is much preferable. Of the reds on my shelf those I prefer to this are more than double he price. If you really want a fruit bomb the society’s cheap Spanish reds are perhaps what you should go for. Quid multum?"
Dr Christopher Currie (01-Aug-2020)
Mr Piers Beckley (25-Jul-2020)
"So it's the Wine Society's Claret, for the 2018 vintage.
For all the talk of new frontiers of wine, discovering new regions bla, bla, bla, this is the wine the Wine Society is built on. It doubtless sells by the bucketload to gentlemen in their sixties and seventies, who grew up with claret as the sine qua non of what a wine at the dinner table is, and who learned to like wine, long before Australia, let alone Chile, started producing the base line wines for British supermarkets, which democratised the concept of wine for people whose families weren't middle class in the 1960s.
So what do you get if you buy this? A medium bodied, unshowy red wine, with some plum fruit and a touch of wood. And you know what? I really like it. It slightly over delivers for the price point IF you 'get it'.
What I mean by that, is 'getting' a wine that isn't that alcoholic, and doesn't taste of that much, but just slips down easily with most things that you happen to have on your dinner table.
If you haven't drunk red Bordeaux before and if, for you, red wine is more typically a shiraz from Australia or malbec from Argentina, then here's my tip. Don't start in on Bordeaux by buying this one; start first by trying a better example e.g. the Exhibition Haut Medoc. (The 2015 vintage is terrific, but I've never had a bad vintage of that.) Then, if you get a taste for it, you'll find that while this isn't quite as good, it's very enjoyable for the price it's selling at; it could even become a favourite standby.
If you already buy this wine year in year out, then no worries. It's a good vintage and it's a good example and you'll get what you're looking for.
The question, though, is whether basic Bordeaux can continue to delight new generations of British men and women in the way it won over Englishmen of a certain age. I think it can, but it needs to be understood, or it can just be dismissed as not flavoursome enough compared with what the New World can give you."
Rev Robert Stanier (18-Jul-2020)
"Easy drinking.Very smooth and rounded with no edges. The perfect companion with a basic and traditional Sunday lunch. Roast chicken, roast potatoes (in goose fat) three veg. What’s not to like ?"
Donald P J Speck Esq (05-Jul-2020)
"Nicley Surprised for price, dry , with a nice after taste, pleasant fruity aroma, picking up buttery flavours with cherrys and licorice "
Kevin A Mager Esq (28-Jun-2020)
"A medium ranking midweek red, to be honest I was expecting a bit more from THW, especially with their name on the bottle. No better than your average Bordeaux Superior available in most French hypermarchés, definitely not as good as [another merchant's] claret. I found it weak with only a little structure, and certainly not the depth in the two bottles I drank that others refer to here."
Mr Timothy A Griffin (18-Jun-2020)
"Totally agree with both Mr Shearer and Mr Griffith "
Mr Lawrence Clephane (12-Jun-2020)
"A first Wine Society wine for me, and certainly easy drinking although I had hoped for more. Merlot-based, and unoaked with blackberry, spice and tobacco on the nose even if a bit thin. To taste, blackberry, plum, a little cherry, coffee and soft tannins."
Mr Mark Watson (18-May-2020)
"I think Mr Wynell-Mayow and Mr McCann sum it up well. I've just drunk a half-bottle. It had lovely warm spiced plum aromas and taste. Nice tannins and was well balanced - excellent for the price."
Mr Andrew Watson (12-May-2020)
"Very easy drinking, every day claret. Don’t over think it....it is only £7.50 a bottle!!! The 2018 is excellent at this price point. "
Mr Michael C Wynell-Mayow (11-Mar-2020)
"Allan Shearer (04 Feb 2020) sums it up well: "disappointing . . . showing neither depth nor complexity". I found it disappointingly thin and acidic. Sorry, but I simply couldn't detect any of the fruitiness mentioned in the Society's tasting notes."
Mr David Griffith (01-Mar-2020)
"It lacks body for a claret but I like the blend of 55% merlot, 27% cab franc and 18% cab sauvignon. You don’t get that much cabernet in a claret at this price range. Very good value."
Mr Pierre Deleu (19-Feb-2020)
"likable an very drinkable nice red"
Mr Ian Milne (11-Feb-2020)
"I found this really disappointing. Showing neither depth nor complexity."
Mr Allan Shearer (04-Feb-2020)
"A wine I’ve enjoyed before asa good everyday claret. However, this offering as part of the 2018 claret case was disappointing in this company. All 5 others, including 3 which were cheaper, were (to my taste) better. "
Mr David Welland (05-Jan-2020)
"I thought it was a nice Claret, had it with Christmas dinner, a little sharp and dry but very drinkable. "
Mr Ian McVeigh (25-Dec-2019)
"Some black fruit on the nose but lacking body. The wine felt a bit numb and ungenerous."
Mr Hans Bergstrom (19-Dec-2019)
"Pleasantly impressed with this. "
Captain Gregory Browne (27-Nov-2019)
"Moderate fruit, light ot medium body. Not the best WS value claret in this price range."
Dr Martyn Thomas (26-Nov-2019)
"Fruity, firm, dry, good staple."
Mr James Bowkett (23-Nov-2019)
"Perfectly decent young claret. Ripe and fruity with good grip making this perfectly good midweek fare and great value at £7.50. "
Philip Harvey Esq (21-Nov-2019)
"Love my claret but this 2018 just didn't hit the mark. Lacked body - won't buy again."
Mr William Nell (12-Nov-2019)
"I’ve had both the 2015 and 2016 vintages of this Society favourite and found them to be exceptional value for money. However, I’m just not feeling this 2018 vintage. It’s a bit angular. Perhaps needs more time in the bottle."
Mr Adrian French (29-Sep-2019)
"A nice complex claret with good depth.Very well priced. Will buy again"
Mr Chris McCann (11-Sep-2019)

Daily Express (10th Oct 2020)
"Another great-value
bottle from The Wine Society, unsurprisingly a perennial bestseller and an
ever-reliable fallback for a reasonably priced Bordeaux red. Some claim it's a
bit bland but what do they know? Soft, fruity. - Matt Nixson"
The Herald (3rd Oct 2020)
"Is there anything
more reassuring than the Wine Society claret? It's just sublime for the price
with soft plummy fruit, smooth but evident tannins and a nice mellow finish.
It's like a hug in a glass. - Gerard Richardson"
Lynn News (14th Jul 2020)
"I rarely recommend
claret these days as the prices of red Bordeaux have become silly and the
quality at the everyday level is often questionable. The ever-reliable Wine
Society, however, does offer something joyous. The Society's Claret 2018 is
merlot-based and benefits from the hot 2018 vintage to produce a wine of
richness and depth that is all blackberries, plums, chocolate and mint. - Giles Luckett"
2017 VINTAGE - MEMBER REVIEWS
"Nothing to dislike, nothing to like, dull middle of the road red wine. "
Mr John Preston (25-Oct-2019)
"A thin and watery wine with little to recommend it. Disappointing."
Mr Peter Hammersley (07-Jul-2019)
"Personally don’t feel this is good value, not that enjoyable and quite a thin wine without much taste to it"
Mr Alfred Baldwin (14-Jun-2019)
"Disappointed with this one, very flat and dull. Wouldn’t order this again. First wine I have tried from the Society that’s not been a hit round the dinner table."
Miss Jennifer Veitch (29-May-2019)
"Very pleasant, easy drinking. Of course its not a "fine wine" but it certainly is really good for the price"
Mr Paul Gauntlett (08-May-2019)
"I found this a pleasant wine, "easy drinking" is a good description. However, probably wouldn't rush to order again."
Dr David Bryson (25-Apr-2019)
"Fantastic value everyday wine. Quite an approachable style which is not a bad thing. Works well in a half bottle format, perfect for one. "
Mr Malcolm Venter (07-Apr-2019)
"As a low-cost French wine for general everyday consumption, this is a cracking bottle that has never let me down. Is it going to set the world on fire? No. But one gets what one pays for and for the price, you can't go wrong. "
Mr Benjamin T Humphrey (29-Mar-2019)
"I had this claret with my meal of casseroled beef with vegetables . I enjoyed it very much . It had a lot of body to it. I enjoyed it as much as Trenel I had last night. When i am hungry and i just want to eat this is a good wine to go with my condition."
Mr Ken Smith (24-Mar-2019)
"Really excellent well rounded French wine, has a decent amount of body for the price, some tannins too. Really good. Just to point out though that it was almost undrinkable on day 2 so drink up! "
Mr Charles Snead (22-Mar-2019)
"very decent for the price. med body, quite prominent tannins."
Mr Charles Snead (08-Mar-2019)
"Having read very positive reviews, I was a little reluctant to add my thoughts. The wine looked promising in the glass but I found little on the nose and not a lot on the palate, perhaps I’m simply not used to a less full bodied wine but I certainly didn’t think ‘wow’. "
Mrs Elissa Patterson (23-Jan-2019)
"How to cater for large dinner party of 14 without breaking the bank, knowing that all are walking home and no-one is working tomorrow? Well, you could do worse than decant this 24 hours in advance. There's no finesse with muslin and funnels, its young so chuck it in and leave the lid open, frankly a water jug would work. The 24 hours isn't an estimate by the way, this was still quite hard up to 18 hours before the harsh edges fell away. Equally much longer than 24 hours and there isn't enough body to stay the course. Don't worry about our guests, they were softened up with a delicious Chablis with their starter and a pud wine to send them home and still enjoyed 5 bottles of this young 'un."
Mr Simon Gill (17-Dec-2018)

"My favourites from
The Wine Society include many of its own-label Society wines such as [this] and
Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc 2018 which hit the mark for both flavour and price. - Christine Austin"
The Gentleman's Journal (19th Jul 2019)
"Everything about this
bottle appealed to the team’s taste — from its amethyst hue, to its
unapologetically rich nose and body. A fruity, soft red with a peppery finish,
this offering from The Wine Society is undeniably rustic in both style and
texture.
Whilst some of the team had their reservations about the sharpness of this
wine, at £6.95 a bottle we are seriously impressed. - Anna Galbraith"

"My favourite everyday
claret: 'This is our best-selling red wine. Every January I go to Bordeaux and
put together the blend of the new vintage with Maison Sichel's excellent
technical director Yvan Meyer. I aim for an easy-drinking claret with immediate
appeal that has unmistakable Bordeaux character. Unlike most of our
competitors, we don't include any oak in the blend, so you're just tasting the
fruit.' - Tim Sykes"
Lynn News (7th May 2019)
"The Wine Society have
always been good at generic wine and their 2017 Claret is great stuff.
Medium-bodied and fresh tasting - as is the vintage's nature - its juicy red
and blackberry fruit, subtle notes of minerals and raspberries and rounded
tannins make for a very enjoyable evening sipper. - Giles Luckett"

"This is a good wine, and better than the Graves and Bordeaux Superieur I bought at the same time: smooth but not soft"
Mr Bill Sanderson (16-Feb-2019)
"This is now my go to Bordeaux - it is completely consistent - my experience of recent vintages is that it is reliable in volume. I see no shame in opening with vintage Bordeaux at large dinner parties and gatherings then going for this Society Claret."
Mr Tom Petch (12-Jan-2019)
"A very pleasant two tick wine the amateur sommelier of Wells-Next-The-Sea"
Mr John Corney (05-Dec-2018)
"A little bit of wood and smoke on the nose, with a surprisingly subtle palate. Not subtle as to intensity – it's robust, with traditional Claret fruit, a little spice, and a woodchip tang. It has some subtle structure holding it together – not anything forward, just a medium-bodied framework the fruit and acid hangs upon. There's acid throughout, which dominates the finish, with a little, slightly sweeter fruit. Decent. 6/10 "
Mr Owen Edwards (04-Dec-2018)
"best value claret I have ever tasted! Shocked how lovely it tasted for the price!"
Mr Tobin Ayers (15-Oct-2018)
"Has an acidic chemical after taste. Really not nice at all, left half the bottle. "
Mr David Meagor (28-Sep-2018)
"At this price point, hard to argue with. Leave to breathe, it will be OK accompanying the usual food suspects "
Mr Frederick Matthews (25-Aug-2018)
Mr Trefor Rosser-James (15-Jul-2018)
"Full disclosure - I hate cheap red wine with a vengeance and so expected to hate this, not least as my formative wine moments were made when classed growth claret was fairly affordable. Many cheaper reds have a mono dimensionality of flavour, coupled with a slap you in the face sweet fruitiness. That is the antithesis of how I see claret, the most cerebral of wines. Well this isn't Pichon Lalande, but it has the hallmarks of a classic claret, generosity of fruit, but decent structure to support it. Another remarkably good job by TWS. Quite shocked!
"
Mr Neil Hogg (13-Jul-2018)
"I ordered one of these as a filler in a mixed case, not expecting too much for a generic claret. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was! Proper Bordeaux character- no oak as is the modern style for this level- but an authentic bouquet and plenty of flavour. It does have an astringent edge which some may find a bit off-putting. It does make it a wine capable of handling robust food flavours. However I also found it good without food. I will buy again- many others obviously agree as it's a best-seller."
Dr Robin W D Mitchell (02-Jun-2018)
"Decent claret for the price, good and honest nothing special but nothing wrong with it either. Served it warmer than usual and that helped."
Mr Dominic Tucker (29-May-2018)
"I was a bit worried by the other reviews here as I have been buying this for years and was looking to restock now that my 2015 was running out.
Only bought one case, just in case, but it's as good as ever.
Can't be beaten as standard everyday red."
Mr G J Porcas (23-Apr-2018)
"Sorry to say tat my wife and I thought this wine to be rather disappointing. I agree with the previous comment, too acidic and a little rather rough on the edges. Not one I would buy again"
Mr Christopher Day (20-Jan-2018)
"I found the 2016 Claret over acidic.Disappointing:sorry to say."

"
Mr Tom Rodger (22-Oct-2017)
"After year of struggling with overpriced and over serious Bordeaux I have moved down market. What a relief to find this wine. Fresh food-friendly authentic Bordeaux as it used to be. Very useful standby in half bottles."
Raymond A Fulton (10-Oct-2017)
"Everyday drinking wine, light, fruity, not fully developed, slightly acid. Reasonable for the price. Family and BBQ use and quaffing on your own would be fine. Not one to impress the neighbours."
Dr Martin Wilkinson (06-Sep-2017)
"for £6.75 the buyer should get a knighthood, ok its a particularly good vintage, but as an easy drinking guzzler its the biz. It loses its acidic youthfullness and rounds up like a decent jugged bordeaux you might get in a bistro near Bordeaux, if you decant it for a couple of hours."
Mr James Brown (28-Jul-2017)
"This vintage of a normally quaffable wine is slightly too tannic to be an everyday claret: I detect a strong flavour of cabernet franc, almost Loire in its bluntness – for everyday drinking I would want something softer and more food-friendly. “Merlot based” it may be, but is that a shade disingenuous?"
Mr Nigel Cory (10-Jul-2017)
"Hmmmm this really grew on me with each glass. To start I found it a bit heavy and tannic but it opened up very nicely. Notably refreshing and pleasurable. Another one of the Wine Society's very good > £8 clarets."
Mr Aaron Frazer (29-Jun-2017)
"Wonderful "all-rounder" and very drinkable table wine
Medium bodied and haven't found anyone who didn't like it. I prefer heavier, older claret and my wife a lighter red..... but we both enjoy this wine! Well done (again) the society for solving our problem !
Great value for money in my book"
Mr Richard A Emmett (07-Jun-2017)
"Pleasant, easy drinking and good value. Not surprised it's a best seller."
Mr Bruce Collinson (31-May-2017)
"Quite dry, quite light, very easy drinking. Not my usual type of wine (I generally prefer more full bodied), but would definitely reorder this again. Good value.
Lcops"
Mr George O'Neill (24-May-2017)
"Exactly what I expected for under £7 a bottle and that is not a negative. A lovely midweek glugger with dinner. Highest compliment I can pay the wine is that the girlfriend enjoys a glass and she insists she dislikes red."
Mr Simon Mountjoy (21-May-2017)
"The Society's Claret is back on form with the 2015. After a few years of mild disappointment, this year's version is very enjoyable, esspecially at the price."
Mr Simon Mollett (06-Jan-2017)
"Simple but decent and (if you don't let your expectations run away with you) a perfectly enjoyable glugger. Would happily drink again."
Mr Robert Trevelyan (10-Dec-2016)
"I haven't had claret in years and wasn't certain about ordering this one, but am so glad I did. This is smooth and slightly buttery - very moreish indeed and definitely would order again."
Miss Heidi Daugherty (02-Dec-2016)
"A long time since we have had this, this time it came in in wine without fuss. OK, it's not yer fancy claret but it's a decent drinking claret when you don't need to impress anyone and it's kitchen dinner."
Mr James D Tassell (17-Sep-2016)
Mr Piers Beckley (04-Sep-2016)
2014 VINTAGE - MEMBER REVIEWS
"I was a little reluctant to order this following the mixed reviews of the previous vintage but recently got 2 bottles in a mixed case. The initial smell and taste didn't do much to allay my fears but after giving it some time and air it opened up nicely and was enjoyable to drink.
It does what it says on the tin and is a nice everyday wine for those, who like me, prefer more tanic reds to the new world fruit bombs stocked by the supermarkets at a similar price.
I don't think its quite as good as Berry's Good Ordinary Claret but its not far off and is a fair bit cheaper.
I will be ordering some half bottles for mid week drinking."
Mr David Marshall (24-Mar-2016)
"Excellent value wine.Good depth of flavour and significant - and welcome- fruit alongside the expected minerality. I've had worse bottles of claret that cost 2 and 3 times as much."
Mr John Carr (12-Mar-2016)
"Very nice drinkable Bordeaux. There's just a hint of what I would describe as chalkiness at the end of a mouthful, the only thing which gives it away as a cheaper wine. A great mid-week or night-in wine nonetheless! I always get a bottle or two with each order."
Mr Matt Ridley (15-Feb-2016)
"This is our standard wine and we have drunk many, many cases over the decades. This year on the morning after, we find the slightest suspicion of a headache, never before encountered, and most unwelcome. Looking forward to a return to old times next year hopefully. We may have to explore other corners of the list in the interim."
(25-Jan-2016)
"I love this wine, In have had bottles of claret at twice the price that are nowhere near the quality of this excellent offering."
Mr Adam Morris (10-Jan-2016)
"A wine to restore your faith in the Bordeaux region. Clearly this shows what can be achieved at the budget end of the spectrum by a producer who knows what they're doing. I've had Bordeaux at three times the price that didn't have the character of this (note to winemakers: tannin does not equal character). Simple, fruity, plenty of plums and a touch of green pepper with just enough structure to keep it drinkable to the end of the bottle, or let it pair up with a bolognese."
Mr Barry Smith (15-Dec-2015)
"The only 'house' bottle I've ordered thus far from The Society, and what a let-down. Non-descript when we expected a lot better."

Mr Paul Murdin (11-Aug-2016)
"Top marks to the buyer. For the money and more it's excellent value, bright, fruity but definitely a Bordeaux. I can't recommend it enough."
Mr James Brown (03-Aug-2015)
"This wine was a disappointment. You would hardly know it was a Bordeaux if not for the label. No varietal flavours, virtually no bouquet at all."
Dr Brian Metters (16-Jun-2015)
"Great wine for the price."
Mr Tom Watts (11-Apr-2015)
"A good, honest, enjoyable claret - and good value. I'll be back for more!"
Mr Gregory J Wright (07-Mar-2015)
"Disturbed by the astringent taste in the first glass and heeding the advice of the chap who decanted his bottle for 3 days. We rapidly decanted the rest of the bottle into a Hook Norton Brewery Pint Glass. Taking another pint glass of different origin we performed a vigorous exchange of the fluid between the two receptacles in the method commonly used to cool hot tea when in a rush. After toiling considerably, the wine was markedly improved. Would not buy again."
Mr Noah Evans Harding (20-Feb-2015)
"This was another Society own label that didn't disappoint. Clean, fresh and easy drinking with plenty well balanced fruit this beats any supermarket own label Clarets. Good value."
Mr Shane Keen (20-Jan-2015)
"I don't agree with the recent reviews. When I served this wine at a recent dinner party everyone wanted to know where it had come from. Smooth and delicious with a reasonable alcohol content that didn't blow your head off!"
Mrs Helen Bogle (24-Nov-2014)
"I am not at all impressed with the latest Wine Society Claret. Friends have also been a bit rude about it! Sad as this should be the showcase every day red of the Society ."
Mr Andrew C Campbell (13-Nov-2014)
"Enjoyable to drink although not as full bodied as other clarets I have previously tried but still a really nice wine to have with a meal, as stated in the description the wine is light and fruity and great value at this price."
Mr David Mitchell (06-Oct-2014)
"A few bottles of The Society Claret have been included in most of my orders back to 2011. Sadly the latest batch is not up to standard ok with food but leaves a nasty aftertaste. I will not be ordering this in the future not to recommended.
"
Mr Christopher Taylor (18-Sep-2014)
"Encouraged by members reviews I ordered this towards the end of 2013.
I was not disappointed, this is not a wine for special occasions, but it is a good honest claret for enjoying with food anytime. We drink wine for pleasure, I hope to be enjoying this one long into the future."
Mr Sidney Roots (06-Apr-2014)
"Can't believe I'd never tried this before. Delicious stuff- savoury, light, refreshing and almost too easy to drink. Not complex but I'd happily drink a glass of this anytime of day with or without food."
Mr Jonathan Rippon (08-Mar-2014)
"A good example of a typical Bordeaux, bit too much Cabernet in my opinion, however very drinkable."
Mr Craig Owen (15-Feb-2014)
"Was very impressed with this claret early 2013. But seemed average on buying another bottle at the back end of 2013?"
Dr Jonathan Winship (23-Jan-2014)
"Disappointed with this wine. Decanted it but it had a vinegary flavour and it wasn't until the third day that I could say (for me anyway) that it was properly drinkable. Will not repeat this purchase…and although quite a new member, that is the first Wine Society bottle I could say that about."
Mr David O'Brien (22-Jan-2014)
"Is this the nicest Claret in the society's range? No. Is it a decent wine that one can drink as an everyday tipple quite easily. Absolutely. It is no where near as fruity as some of the new world wines on hear and I have heard some people describe it as 'dry'. This is no bad thing. It is slightly more intriguing than other more basic wines but without the complexities of say a Les Tour. Alright, we're never going to roll it out for a member of the Royal Family but as my regular house guests do not yet consist of HRHs this is a wine that will find it on to my rack time and time again. Well priced, unpretentious, and fits well with everyday life."
Mr Benjamin T Humphrey (23-Nov-2013)
"Certainly not the most complex of wines, but a pleasant and drinkable Bordeaux. Generic red fruit and graphite are all I could really detect. Probably a little harsh, tannin wise, for drinking on its own, but a salty, savoury accompaniment really brings out the soft fruity Merlot flavours. At this price point, I'd say a good choice for everyday drinking with strong dishes and cheeses."
(31-May-2013)
"Arrived as a gift Xmas 2012, tasted April 2013. Rather good - light and (to my taste) more akin to a well made cabernet franc blend, strawberries and cream, rounded and with excellent depth without being heavy. Nothing complex, but great lunchtime / mid-week claret. What it isn't, is a fragrant cabernet sauvignon, thin, mouth puckering Medoc like so many others! Definitely worth buying more - a credit to The Society. Be interesting to see if I was just lucky, or if there is consistency."
Mr Tim Potts (29-Apr-2013)
"Younger people with a sweet tooth may not like this wine, but it is a very good everyday Bordeaux. It was what I was brought up with in France and England."
Mr John R Howson (21-Mar-2013)
"This wine reminded me of what good house claret should be. Pleasantly full, tannic and long. Not as good as BBR's Extraordinary Good Claret but represents value at £2.50 cheaper."
Mr Charles Stokes (05-Jan-2013)
"We decided to pair this wine with traditional Roast Beef. We found black fruits to the fore and gentle tannins. A pleasant wine to have with food.
"
Mr Martin Boulton (14-Aug-2012)
"This is one of those wines that you have to accept for what it is, rather than complain about what it is not. It is most definitely not an expensive, modern, over-extracted, fruit-driven Bordeaux. What it is, is an old fashioned, light, slightly tannic, everyday food wine, more in the style of a good Beaujolais. Looked upon like this, it represents great value for money and I would happily drink it over any New World equivalent. This is a style of wine which is deeply out of fashion at the moment but don't be put off; there's more to life than alcoholic fruit juice!"
Mr Daniel Harrison (08-Jun-2012)
"Roughly four out of five bottles of this wine have been excellent, the fifth a disappointment; those were possibly bin ends. The one I have just finished is a reminder of just how good this blend is. Moreover it remains not just drinkable but seriously enjoyable 48 hours after opening (given evacuation). Better value than most petit-chateau clarets at up to twice the price."
Dr Christopher Currie (22-Apr-2012)
"I like this; a modest, dry, fresh and classic style which opens up beautifully when decanted. Well worth the price and excellent with (sorry designed for!) food. Keep it up chaps and chapesses."
Mr Tomas Bexton (17-Apr-2012)
"Quite rough and cheap tasting. I won't be buying this again."
Mr Gawain Young (30-Mar-2012)
"This has had very mixed reviews. I am most definitely in agreement with the others who say this is one to avoid."
Mr Jack Morrocco (27-Mar-2012)
"In the past I have had a mixed experience with claret prefering Rhone reds. This Claret is an exception and is most delightful and a bargain at the price."
Dr John Baston (16-Nov-2011)
"Have moved onto this as trying to clear some space and had a case that has been sitting for a while. Thoroughly enjoying it, especially with the nights closing in. Came to the site to get some more."
Mr Edward Sargent (22-Oct-2011)
"I have to say that I have to agree with some of the reviews here, that I found this claret rather disappointing. Having bought a case, I have tried to coax some life into it by leaving to breathe and correct temperature, etc, but I think this does not live up to The Wine Society standards."
Mr Darrin E Bransgrove (04-Apr-2011)
"I am buying my second case.

Miss Patricia L Rees (13-Feb-2011)
"This edition of the Society's Claret is truly awful - avoid or keep it a year and see if it improves.
To the Society - I am astonished you are shipping this to Members and suggest you withdraw it until it becomes drinkable."
Mr David Forsyth (13-Jan-2011)
"Somewhat tight nose hinting at winter berries; slightly unexpressive. Plenty of zesty raspberry-ish fruit on the palate, nice grippy tannins and an interesting, light, acidic finish with a surprisingly decent length.
Overall, a decent glugger which would suit lamb chops nicely. Priced fairly at £6."
Mr William Davies (12-Dec-2010)
"I am sorry to say that I found The Society's Claret somewhat disappointing. I bought it because I thought that it was likely to be good, but found it rather flat and uninspiring."
Mr David Ingham (17-Aug-2009)
""Generally excellent because not oaky, heavy or "Medocky", but with body and character. Great with everything, including fish. Only criticism is that quality can be inconsistent." Note from The Wine Society: We want all wine purchased from The Society to be enjoyable. If it is not, then we would like to hear about it, and would encourage members to contact Member Services on 01438 741177."
Mr David H Neckar (13-Aug-2009)
"I have been drinking the Society's Claret for many years and find it a good quality wine at an affordable price. Occasionally when in France I buy other wines but my staple is the Society's Claret which not only suits my taste but also that of friends with whom I sometimes share it."
Dr John A Hostettler (08-Aug-2009)
"A first rate claret for the price - I'll buy it again!"
Mr Keith Fletcher (07-Aug-2009)
"A lovely soft everyday drinking claret offering excellent value for money and much better drinking than many expensive chateau bottled wines."
Mr Timothy D Mitchell (07-Aug-2009)
"I've been buying - and drinking - The Society's Claret for 25+ years. Why? The taste, of course. Reliable consistency. Value for money. And, in these days of climbing alcohol levels, its modest strength. Along with The Society's Beaujolais, it's an ideal, inexpensive, everyday house red. Leaving Sunday lunchtimes for something a bit more racy!
"
Mr Ian Duke (06-Aug-2009)
"Pleasant everyday drinking well balanced not too much fruit or alcohol good finish."
Mr Raymond Woolley (06-Aug-2009)
"A pleasant wine at a modest price, very suitable for everyday drinking and much enjoyed."
Mr Douglas Gardiner (06-Aug-2009)
"I joined the Society during Lent 1979 when I was in one of my periodic periods of abstention but with the difference that at the end of Lent I found myself definitively converted to a vegetarian and teetotal habit. So it has happened that my buying from the Society has been entirely for the benefit of my family and friends whose responses over the years have given me great, if only vicarious, pleasure. Society claret has ranked very high for the consistently maintained quality preserving from year to year a recognisable character. All of my informants think it outstanding for price, quality and reliability."
Francis J Benton Esq (06-Aug-2009)
"For anyone who enjoys red Bordeaux, The Society's Claret is an eminently drinkable wine, representing excellent value and really good, consistent quality."
Mr Robert Wainwright (06-Aug-2009)
"When you buy wine from the supermarket at 50% off the original price of £8.99 you do not know whether the wine is really worth the £4.50 you are paying for it. When you pay the very small additional premium for the Society's Claret you know that what you are buying is certain to be worth every penny and comes from one of the best, if not the best, French suppliers.
"
Mr Nigel Wood (05-Aug-2009)
"The Society claret has been our in house wine of choice for many years. The quality has been excellent and the blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot suits our taste for everyday drinking. I believe it offers good value and excellent quality."
Michael N Whiteman Esq (05-Aug-2009)
"Great value Claret, everyday drinking wine, not too heavy a delight for the summer evening BBQ as well as Sunday Lunch!"
Mr Nicholas Challacombe (05-Aug-2009)
NV VINTAGE - PRESS REVIEWS
The Wine Gang (Mar 2013)
"The Society's claret is the members' favourite wine, which says at least as much about the membership as the wine. Made by Sichel, it's unoaked, Merlot-based and non-vintage, although based on the previous year's harvest, so in the case of the wine we tasted, 2011. It's medium-bodied, fresh and approachable with mulberry and blackberry fruit and soft graphite flavours. Goes with: Red meat & Dark game, Chicken. "
