Mr Phillip Henry (08-Oct-2020)
"Excellent quality. Fruity, good depth and fragrance. "
Mr Andrew Saunders (27-Aug-2020)
Mr Bill Stone (25-Jul-2020)
"Nice easy going wine, fruity with good berry flavours, good for the price"
Kevin A Mager Esq (20-Jul-2020)
"Did I enjoy drinking it -YES
Would I purchase it again -YES
"
Mr David Watson (20-Jul-2020)
"An amazing wine that is easy to drink, my first taste of it instantly took me back to my time spent working in France and the great wine tasted there. This is a very easy to drink wine.. the bottle emptied top quick."
Mr Gareth Smith (14-Jul-2020)
"Disappointing but as we have just returned from Sydney we are conditioned by cool and hot climate Oz Shiraz. All the other choices on our 1st Wine Society order are 4-5 star so far. "
Ms Valery Horridge (14-Jul-2020)
"Quite disappointed after reading so many praising reviews. Compared to other mid priced Cotes du a Rhône I found this one a bit thin and lacking in body and flavour. "
Mr Jon Rhodes (02-Jul-2020)
"Was a bit disappointed with this after reading the reviews. It lacks flavour and depth. Blindfolded, you’d easily mistake it for a cheap low end supermarket bottle of plonk. "
Mr Gaurav Jairath (17-Jun-2020)
"Great tasting wine fr not much money great value and quality"
Mr John Atkins (15-Jun-2020)
"Fantastic, easy drinking red. Great value. "
Miss Lisa Power (15-Jun-2020)
"This is a classic great value red wine, easy drinking gluggable good all rounder."
Mr Jason Hargreaves (14-Jun-2020)
Mr James Butler (09-Jun-2020)
"Value for money, a very good bottle.
Mellow fruits, no tannins, no barrel. Ripe plums and stewed apples, with, late on the palate, a hint of licorice and, faintly, cloves.
This wine benefits from being chilled and decanted.
Clearly, more mature CDR, based on longer extraction and with longer cellaring has greater complexity, but not for 8 pounds."
Mr Andre Hebbelinck (04-Jun-2020)
"There are many variables in the equation of what makes a good wine. Not least personal taste, and for me this is a great VFM wine. Half an hour in the decanter, and voila, you have a perfect midweeker, which drinks well with and without food. Sure there are more serious, interesting or complex wines out there, but at under £8, this takes some beating. "
Mr Peter Minns (14-May-2020)
"A superb wine which is delightful as an appetizer or accompanying most food. Smooth and well balanced it will add zest to your cellar."
Mr David J Welsh (12-May-2020)
"Outstanding for quality and cost."
Mr Jonathan Robinson (07-May-2020)
"A tad sharp... pay a bit more and get a much better wine"
Mr Julian Bailey (06-May-2020)
"Lovely. Lots of red fruits - yummy! Very good value."
Mr Benjamin Leaver (28-Mar-2020)
"An OK CdR but plenty of others I would choose over this"
Mr Steven Foster (15-Mar-2020)
"Needed to breathe for a few minutes but then lovely smooth Rhone with lots of red fruit, excellent value"
Mr Ian Midgley (06-Mar-2020)
"What the Society is all about: a cracking good wine, well made, absolutely delicious and ludicrously good value"
Mr Dominick Henry (04-Mar-2020)
"This was bought as a possible drinking wine for my wife who is new to red wine and will not yet tolerate tannins. Beujolais and Pinot Noir are always there but this is just as good and better value than many types of the others where low price is not usually a recommendation for drinkability.
The wine itself is silky smooth red fruits on the pallet and the nose. Very easy to drink and I can imagine it as an all round red for larger gatherings.
Pair with lighter meat dishes even chicken."
Mr David Glover (02-Feb-2020)
"Under flavoured and a bit insipid. Expected more."
Mr Steve Jones (29-Dec-2019)
"Very nice but slightly bitter"
Mr Alex Vaystikh (29-Dec-2019)
"We really enjoy the Society's Côte de Rhone for weekday drinks and parties. It's very good value-for-money and punches to a Village or minor Cru standard. "
Prof Tom Watson (23-Dec-2019)
Mr Bradley Eagle (22-Dec-2019)
"Three stars because it doesnt give you a headache. Otherwise this shouldnt be here"
Mr Afa Boran (21-Dec-2019)
"Very drinkable, smooth, fruity (blackcurrants I guess - but I'm not good at telling really); good value"
Mr Julien M Hartley (18-Dec-2019)
"Superb value, a very s moth full-bodied wine, we all enjoyed it with the roast beef"
Ms Sue Perks (15-Dec-2019)
Mr Andy Sharples (01-Dec-2019)
2017 VINTAGE - MEMBER REVIEWS
"Would definitely buy again"
Mr Andrew Saunders (06-Jan-2020)
"Nice easy drinking. Fruity, smooth and balanced. Would re-order"
Mr Nathan Whittamore (11-Jun-2019)
"I have recently joined and decided to test the society own label. We are Rhone lovers. This wine surprised me as for a basic wine its tasty and very drinkable, my wife and I enjoyed it. While it has no single great character it is well rounded and has some depth. I would recommend it for everyday drinking. "
Mr Anthony Johnson (13-May-2019)
"Give it 30 mins in a decanter and you have a nice easy drinking Rhone which is very representative of its region It's fresh and fruity with enough structure to match any good guzzler. My wife thought it was a Beaujolais...and with hindsight i could just about see where she was coming from.
BUT it isn't a patch on the glorious 2016, a vintage which i believe turned out possibly the best entry level quality i can ever remember, and I've been enjoying French wines for over 40yrs."
Mr James Brown (07-Mar-2019)
"We thoroughly enjoyed this wine with our Sunday lunch. We have reordered "
Mr Ian Boak (03-Mar-2019)
"Typical Rhone, no less enjoyable for that. Went well with a tuna casserole. Decent fruit/tannin balance, and in my view one of the better lower-priced Rhones. Recommended."
Mr John Carr (22-Feb-2019)
"A brilliant, balanced everyday Rhone red. Versatile with food and a comforting, rounded wine without beating you up."
Mr Rob Cowen (04-Feb-2019)
2016 VINTAGE - MEMBER REVIEWS
"I think this wine perfectly fits the description 'vin ordinaire'. The blurb on the back of the bottle says that ' Mediterranean climate produces round, fruity, easy-drinking reds'. True, but this is not one of them. It is definitely 'uncomplicated'; to be avoided 'everyday'; definitely not 'full-bodied'. It was so boring that half the bottle went down the sink."
Mr Michael Mahoney (19-Dec-2018)
"Sorry - underwhelmed"
Mr Steven Foster (09-Dec-2018)
"Instantly quoffable, we really liked this, and a bargain as well!"
Mr James Lockyer (10-Nov-2018)
"Ordered another brace, not disappointed- another good wine (certainly at this price point). Very nice with cold meats and cheese. Look forward to the other bottle. "
Mr David Welland (07-Oct-2018)
"This is a very good everyday drinking wine which we re-order regularly. Highly recommended."
Mrs Linda Walton (10-Jul-2018)
"Another bottle of what is a lovely wine for weekday supping. Tastes less full bodied and the 14% strength is a surprise."
Mr David Welland (01-May-2018)
"Fantastic value easy everyday drinking."
Dr Robert Feltham (24-Mar-2018)
"Found this to be more medium-bodied than full, and quite heavy on the tannins. Fruity strawberry flavours. Nothing wrong with it but didn't excite me either."
Mr John Lay (16-Mar-2018)
"Like Mr Barrie, I did not find this particularly good. It tasted sharp. The next day it had improved a little, but still not great."
Mr Ian M Brooker (10-Mar-2018)
"I love this. Wow what a lovely wine. We have tried several 2016 cote du Rhône. And the winner is. The Society wine. Da dah!!!
Congratulations."
Mr Steve Lewis (23-Feb-2018)
"Excellent and full bodied wine for everyday drinking, fruity and smooth without the ‘chemical’ aftertaste of some wines at this price point. I will definitely order more."
Mr David Welland (20-Feb-2018)
"As everyday CdRs go the best are to be found in the Rhone valley and surrounding regions when you are there. However, that said, this to me is one of the better 'everyday' CdRs around. I'm not sure about fruitiness, berries, freshness etc. all I know is that when I have a glass of this I am transported back down the Rhone valley where I had many happy times; so that's got to be worth 5 stars."
Mr Graham Syms (16-Feb-2018)
"Very nice CDR. Easy drinking and great value. Goes easily with food or without. Would definitely recommend other Memebrrship to try. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed."
Mr Tom Rodger (25-Dec-2017)
"I think Mr Barrie must have got a duffer. Because imho this is one of the best generic Cotes du Rhone's I've had in a long time. Its full bodied, inviting and traditional, just how it should be. If you want that bright brash overly fruity upfront modern CDR then perhaps this isn't for you. And straight from the bottle no need to decant. If it were still summer (more's the pity) it could almost compete with the ever wonderful, Minervois, Sainte Eulalie at a similar price point."
Mr James Brown (14-Nov-2017)
"I really did not enjoy this wine, it improved slightly on the second day but I will not be ordering again. It tasted like a typical cheap supermarket cote-du-rhones. Disappointed"
Mr Robert Barrie (25-Oct-2017)
2015 VINTAGE - MEMBER REVIEWS
"Its certainly a lot better after breathing for a bit but not as good as a wine we drank recently on holiday in Visan, Cotes du Rhone .This was from the Visan Cave, Notre Dame des Vignes 2015. Lots of spice and liquorice. In France it is 45 euros for 6 bottles."
Mrs Margaret McGregor (14-Sep-2017)
"I ordered a few half bottles of this for picnic purposes. I opened one on a Sunday night after a really disappointing bottle of Malbec (not from the WS).
The CDR hit the spot. Great depth of flavour a lovely spicy kick on the finish. All too often wines lack a strong finish.
I've added to my Wish List to remind me to order a few bottles next time I place an order."
Mr Martin Wingate (07-Aug-2017)
"When I first joined tws maybe 7 years ago this was one of the first wines I tried. I wasn't keen and haven't re-ordered since, however over the years I've become quite a fan of cheapish Rhones as they tend to be reliable quaffers, so spared on by the good reviews I tried it again tonight and I'm very glad I did.
It's got all the usual tws trademark freshness and wipes the floor with all the supermarket plonk that is available in this price range.
It's definitely worth the money and I'll be purchasing again soon.
In the warm weather we're having at the moment I think it also benefits from I slight chill in the fridge to bring it down to 15c or so."
Mr Kieran Hynes (17-Jun-2017)
"Day one: pungent, slightly sickly, tasted like a generic, cheap (but not nice) Rhone. Had 1.5 glasses and put aside. Day two: totally different experience. Simple, of course, but enjoyable, easy drinking (more medium-full than full bodied, imo) with all trace of the less pleasant characteristics having disappeared. A proper bistro glugger. Would happily drink again but next time I'd decant on opening, even though there's no sediment to speak of and it seems an odd thing to do for an everyday bottle."
Mr Robert Trevelyan (11-Dec-2016)
"Exactly what I would expect a good quality Budget CdR to taste like. Nothing fancy and reassuringly familiar."
Mr Frederick Matthews (10-Dec-2016)
"Note for Mr John Carr, I suggest a brief decant for a wine like this. I have just received the 2015 vintage of this in my last order (it was a replacement for a wine I ordered not now in stock apparently - thanks for the heads up Society......). I will decant and try to remember to leave another review to let you know. Of course, if it does not meet my exacting standards I will letting TWS know!!"
Mr Tomas Bexton (05-Oct-2016)
2014 VINTAGE - MEMBER REVIEWS
Mr John Howard (11-Aug-2016)
"The first Wine Society wine I've sampled that disappointed. I found it lacking in character, with nothing in the way of nose and not much flavour. I won't buy it again.
"
Mr David Tomlinson (12-Apr-2016)
"The label describes this wine accurately, "an uncomplicated, everyday, full bodied red to be enjoyed with or without food." We enjoyed ours on its own and with duck a l'orange."
Dr Brian Carr (20-Mar-2016)
"Great cheaper Rhone, perfect for mid-week. Not much character - pretty generic - but none the worse for a Rhone lover like me."
Mr John Carr (12-Mar-2016)
"Does anyone think that this wine will improve with a little aging ?"
Mr Russell C Barton (24-Jan-2016)
"A quaffer if ever there was one! As perfect an old school Rhone as you'll find in a (French) French bistro in a jug. Lovely inviting grenachey nose. Light glugging pallet... its just too easy to drink. For anyone who's used to bright southern hemispheres its a non starter. If you decant it, drink within 30 mins or its best before will have passed! Next day its only good for the pot. Buy it, its perfect no nonsense Rhone."
Mr James Brown (21-Dec-2015)
"Gamey, burnt caramel (like you get in Pinotage) and white pepper. In absolute terms it's a little thin and acidic but for the price it's a solid quaffer."
Mr Anthony O'Halloran (08-Nov-2015)
2013 VINTAGE - MEMBER REVIEWS
"I didn't get to try the 1st bottle of this I purchased as my other half had it drank in short order while I was still cooking. I got in there quick on the second bottle opened and can see why she drank it in such a short time. She tends to drink without food I prefer to drink with and paired with first the venison I cooked and the bread and cheese to follow it was spot on. Found it very fruity and not acidic as some reviews have commented on. Will be a repeat order for us."
Mr Nigel Bell (24-May-2015)
"The current batch is disappointing, nowhere near as good as previous years, bland, thin and tasteless and lacking body. I am very surprised that this wine made The Society's range, perhaps they haven't tasted it.
"
Mr Cliff Snelling (05-Apr-2015)
"I had the first bottle of the Tartrate Crystal batch and thought it first rate. I wonder if some of the members who do not like it decanted it? For the last 60years I have lived by the maxim that poor wine needs decanting and good wine deserves it, and I think it has paid me off handsomely. I found this a first rate bottle for the price and wished I had bought more."
Mr Richard F Lloyd (29-Jan-2015)
"I have to say I really don't understand some of the reviews for this wine, maybe a bad batch or just individuals expecting more from a £6.50 bottle but I was blown away with this wine, and not just me but my guests too. As a neophyte to wine tasting and The Wine Society maybe my tastes are yet to develop, however, I will likely be ordering many more bottles of this beauty! Well rounded and had the complexity to match some of the more expensive examples I have tried from the Society favourites selection. Well worth a try especially at the price."
Mr Thomas Edwards (03-Jan-2015)
"Sorry, but this (2013) is very strange and decidedly unpleasant: a thin and sharp little wine, disguised by some sort of burn-fruit flavour, and leaving an aftertaste that can only be called plain nasty. It’s hard to see how The Society can justify offering a product like this for sale. Half a glass was more than enough: the rest will flavour the kitchen sink. The fairest thing I can say is that I may have a rogue bottle, but judging from the weight of complaint on this page…"
Dr John Erskine (24-Dec-2014)
"This review is based on the recent batch containing tartrate crystals which was sold at a reduced price, but I think that my observations have a more general application. I have been buying this wine for at least three decades and this batch is extremely disappointing. Here's an extract from the official wine description: "The wines are full and round but have lift and a wonderful drinkability." Excuse me, but oh no they are not! The nose has red fruits and a hint of pepper. The taste is lightweight and fruity with a very tannic finish when freshly opened. After 45 minutes, the tannins have softened, but are now accompanied by acid. My wife wants me to say "sharp", but I'll stick with acidic. It is not a pleasant experience. Full and round this wine is definitely not. My problem now is that I have two cases of the stuff to dispose of, but it's my fault for being greedy when I thought I had spotted a bargain. What I suspect is happening is that Wine Society buyers are trying to keep the price stable by reducing the quality. If you read the reviews of other low-price Society wines in the range, I think you will find that the same picture emerges. This is very disappointing for me as a loyal and long-standing customer. Don't buy this wine. Look elsewhere."
David J Richards Esq (23-Nov-2014)
"Bought as part of the Society's mixed reds. Very flat and bland, no improvement overnight, disappointing. Would return if I had bought multiple bottles."
Mr Gawain Young (18-Oct-2014)
"I don't think it is a good idea for buyers to use the member's reviews section as a place to defend buying (or blending) decisions.
If the buyer wishes to talk about the wine they should do so in the accompanying notes on the wine page, especially as the description there seems at odds with that supplied by Mr O-W on the member's page.
At the same time perhaps Mr O-W could correct the statement on that page which states that '…the Society’s Côtes-du-Rhône is mostly grenache'. In 2013 it clearly isn't, since Mr O-W talks about 'the lack of this essential ingredient'. Why not list the percentage of the various grapes? As you work so closely with the vigneron this should be easy to do."
Mr Richard Morris (28-Aug-2014)
"From Marcel Orford-Williams - Society Buyer. What’s in a vintage? The answer is quite a lot especially when one considers 2013 in relation to the Rhone Valley when for a number of reasons, the Grenache grape, the linchpin of most red Rhone blends produced a very low crop. I saw some vineyards where only one vine in four or five produced any fruit and even that was often just one rather small bunch. Quality is not a problem but the lack of this essential ingredient has inevitably affected the taste and style of the vintage. We buy our Cotes du Rhone from a single producer, the jaume family of Vinsobres with whom we have been working since 1981. We work very closely together and the blend for this vintage was as a result of decisions made together. Following a member’s remark, I tasted this wine this morning and yes, it is certainly different to previous vintages but in my view nonetheless delicious. Rhone wines come in different styles. Some are weighty and very full bodied while others are fruitier and fresher and it is this fruitier category that this wine belongs to, more so in 2013 which has a fresher profile.
"
Marcel Orford-Williams (28-Aug-2014)
"The 2013 is dire, I returned the case: Roger Leon is quite correct. Very disappointing as previous years have been very acceptable 'daily drinkers'"
Mr Philip Selwyn-Smith (27-Aug-2014)
"Very disappointing. (2013). Thin and acidic."
Mr Roger Leon (14-Aug-2014)
"Lovely, everyday drinking wine. There are lots of lingering flavours- raspberry, strawberry and liquorice and whatever!"
Mr Colin Campbell (28-Apr-2014)
"A nice easy drinking wine - just what you would expect from the region and at a good price.
"
Mr Cliff Snelling (17-Mar-2014)
"This is a delicious Cotes du Rhone at a very good price. Very smooth on the palate, good fruit with a hot kick to it. Highly recommended."
Mrs Linda Walton (28-Feb-2014)
"Very good (2011) Cotes du Rhone for the price. Took half an hour to open up in the glass. Really enjoyed it."
Mr Andrew Watson (29-Aug-2013)
"Please note that the Press Reviews of this wine relate to the 2011 vintage, which was indeed excellent, and which is very recently out of stock. The 2012 is now being delivered on order, which is currently drinking very poorly when compared with the 2011's standards - dense, dry and unbalanced by comparison."
Mr Tim Cooke (08-Jul-2013)
"This is much better than previous Soc.Cote de Rhone. Still needs more Syrah in the blend."
Dr J B Farmer (25-May-2013)
"Very disappointing. Light, no discernable depth of flavour. Not good at all. Wine Society can't always get it right (although they very often do!) and this is an example of where they have not!"
Mr Matthew Harris (17-May-2013)
"A subsequent reordering found the bottle to be a 'rogue' and sharp. A disappointment. But, as always to their credit The Society credited my account. I shan't reorder for a while. I have found the 'generation' by the same producers has better quality control. No rogues yet!"
Mr Aron Hills (12-May-2013)
"Extremely disappointing wine not up to the society's usual standards. It has little flavour and a very harsh aftertaste. More reminiscent of wine you pick up from the bargain bin."
Mr Kieran Zucker (27-Apr-2013)
"This seems to be on the lighter side of the Cote-du-Rhone wines I've had in the past and I certainly wouldn't describe it as full-bodied. Fruity and soft, yes, but not over-generous. I'd recommend it be opened at least four hours before drinking. Better value around."
Mr Patrick Neville (24-Apr-2013)
"A 2011 vintage recently purchased, extremely poor, more reminiscent of a €2/litre bubble gum Beaujolais."
Mr James Paterson (09-Apr-2013)
"Not very impressive, but my wife and I managed to drink it whilst watching TV and snacking. Not really recommended."
Mr Kenneth Allinson (24-Feb-2013)
"I have been a society member for just a year. In my first order I chose a bottle of the previous Society CdR. I was not impressed. Since the supplier has been changed I decided to bite the bullet and try again. A wise decision! This is much better. As described. I will reorder all the time it is this good. For the money, it's great value too. Enjoy."
Mr Aron Hills (07-Feb-2013)
"Excellent wine from this new cuvée. Underlying spice, good length. I will be placing another order."
Mr Malcolm J Davies (09-Dec-2012)
"Great little wine - enough body to have depth of flavour and light enough to have a broad appeal and ability to match with several foods. That it is good value is the cherry on the cake!"
Mr David Paterson (13-Oct-2012)
"Received the New Society's Cote-du-Rhone - really smooth and lovely. Will be ordering more soon."
Mr William Bowers (06-Oct-2012)
"Distinctly average. Barely worth the price. Jog on, I think."
Mr Richard Morton (07-Apr-2012)
"This was the second wine I tried since joining the Society and I must admit I did not enjoy it. I found it unpleasantly acidic which is at odds with other reviews so I am wondering whether there was something wrong with this particular bottle or if my taste buds were having an off day."
Mr Richard Marston (10-May-2011)
"Easy drinking, well balanced Cotes du Rhone; redolent of dried cranberries and a plummy, tart finish. Could benefit from a bit more age. Not particularly memorable but perfectly drinkable and priced fairly at £6.50."
Mr William Davies (14-Dec-2010)
"This is a good quality wine which I have found to be the same year after year. It is possible to find better quality Cotes du Rhone red wines from The Wine Society if you pay more, but this is good for everyday drinking. Having tried some Cotes du Rhone red wine from other wine clubs in the last 2 years I have come to the conclusion that The Wine Society still offers the best value of all."
Mr Alan Dyson (12-Aug-2009)
"This wine was good value. For a young wine it was smooth and flavourful. I personally would prefer a slightly sweeter wine with a little more body but one seldom gets perfection at any price and this wine was most enjoyable."
Dr Stuart G McAlpine (10-Aug-2009)
"I have never considered Cotes-du-Rhone as one of the best wines. But then again it has never been one of the most expensive wines. In my opinion Cotes-du-Rhone has always been the one wine which is the best value for money. It has therefore always been the mainstay of my stock over the years, and this 2007 vintage "Society's own" is one of the best I have come across"
Gerald Horrocks Esq (09-Aug-2009)
"This is a wine that I like to keep in as it is very good with most meals particularly roast chicken.
It is uncomplicated wine that does not overpower food but has sufficient body for a wine lover to be satisfied
"
Mr Richard Buckley (06-Aug-2009)
"A deliciously smooth and fruity wine with a typical Rhone finish. Excellent value."
Mr Jack Hasdell (05-Aug-2009)
"It's our house red wine, very difficult to beat for everyday drinking!"
Ms Sal Keighley (11-Jul-2009)
"Spent far more on bottles that don't taste as good. Can't say how well it keeps because in this house a case doesn't last long enough."
Mr Darren McKean (08-Apr-2009)
2013 VINTAGE - PRESS REVIEWS
The Wine Gang (Mar 2013)
"The Society has been buying Côtes-du-Rhône from Domaine Jaume in Vinsobres for more than three decades. We can see why. This is ripe and fleshy, yet savoury and dry, with the authentic crisp pepper and raspberry fruit of good Grenache (rather than the stringy or jammy flavours of over-stretched Grenache). There's a smidgen of Syrah too, to lift the perfume and colour. A good red for stuffed vegetable dishes and veggie casseroles, as well as meaty casseroles, bangers and so on. Goes with: Red meat & Dark game, Duck & Mild game, Hard cheese."
