"Chalky mineral nose, lovely palate of pears and green apple, maybe a bit off dry. Easy to drink"
Mr Matthew Utting (05-Jul-2020)
"Fantastic luscious Riesling, rich and spicy. "
Mr Nicholas Jones (03-Jul-2020)
"I wouldn't buy this wine nothing special for me"
Mr John D Brookes (21-Mar-2020)
"Had great expectations for this, and whilst it had great flavours it was in my mind too sweet and a bit back to the old style rather than the sharpness off modern Reislings. To the point I opened a bottle of something else and enjoyed that instead."
Mr Peter Rose (29-Feb-2020)
"Just tried a bottle of the 2014 with The Society’s Vietnamese Pork Hot Pot recipe. Really delicious with just a hint of petrol beginning to show. Will be buying some more to lay down."
Mr Timothy Reeves (13-Feb-2020)
"The perfect wine after a bad day at work - delicious. Great value too. The prefect Rielsing to try if you've had previous bad experiences wit with this grape!"
Mr Ronald Harley (30-Nov-2019)
"For me, this is just off 'dry' which suites me fine. After 3 cases I'm sold on it.
My preferred white. Best chilled"
Mr J D Pawson (26-Aug-2019)
"This was really enjoyable. Very fruity and surprisingly rich for such a low ABV. Great value. "
Mr David J B McKee (05-Aug-2019)
"Too sweet for me. Probably good if you like this style, but not for me."
Mr James Jack (03-Aug-2019)
"This has been consistently excellent over the years and 2017 is no different. Clean, balanced, and juicy, with decent length. There are not many that can compete at this price point."
Mr Alan Guy (15-Jul-2019)
"First bottle not up to standard but the rest seem fine."
Mr Joseph Goodman (04-Jul-2019)
"Like it says on the label "a shot of brilliance" I purchased one bottle . Its refreshing and has special quality of sweetness. Its the best Riesling that i can remember drinking. I shall be buying some more"
Mr Ken Smith (17-May-2019)
"Lovely. Ripe fruit, lime; sweetness balanced with acidity. Light and refreshing. Excellent aperitif. Well matched with Thai food "
Miss Elizabeth Hirst (04-Apr-2019)
Dr Richard Tunnard (05-Mar-2019)
"Took delivery of a case on Friday - chilled one down a bit and opened it that evening. Delicious. Not as intense and characterful as the 2015, but may yet reach that level with careful storage. If it survives the desire to drink it, that is."
Mr John Carr (24-Feb-2019)

aperitif from the Reh family of historic Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt estate who

dry, lemony, but very grapey rieslings with a delicate tightrope between floral
sweetness and crisp acidity. - Rose Murray Brown"

"Absolutely lovely Riesling and terrific value at the price
Served it with oven-baked salmon. My only regret is that I only purchased two bottles.
Will be looking to order more of the latest vintage. "
Mr Robert Papier (27-Dec-2019)
"Properly fruity and scented. A nicely balanced wine and very good value. I'd have liked a fraction more dryness."
Mr Jonathan Smith (25-Dec-2018)
"Everything you would expect from a top notch Riesling - slightly off dry, heavenly flavour and delicate. Yum."
Mrs Katharine Coleman (14-Dec-2018)
"Ripe, zippy and long. Delicious!"
Mr Paul Mitchell (03-Dec-2018)
"Even better than last year - tropical fruit and the slightest hint of petrol, lovely thread of acidity and long juicy finish. Tremendous value. 2015 was a great year for German riesling and it shows here"
Mr Alan Guy (07-May-2018)
"Absolutely delicious. Had I the budget, I'd buy a couple of cases. Sadly..."
Mr John Carr (01-Apr-2018)
"Beautiful wine. Acidity and sweetness are nicely balanced which makes it very easy to drink."

"Proper Saar. Best on its own but also good with spicy foods. Superb VFM. A regular order for me."
Dr Andrew Rawnsley (12-Aug-2016)
"Off-dry Riesling, low in alcohol, very refreshing slightly chilled.
No obvious food matches in my view, just very good on its own, especially in the summer."

"Off-dry, with exotic,
lychee and pretty citrus flavours. Textured, with fresh acidity on the finish."

"Star buy. Just
off-dry and very grapey. A delicious, light, aperitif-style German riesling
made by the Reh family of the von Kesselstatt estate who own top quality
vineyards in the Saar valley, a tributary of the Mosel. - Rose Murray Brown"
Hexham Courant (16th Jan 2017)
"[This is] perhaps my
favourite [lower-alcohol wine], made by Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt, a top-notch
German wine estate if ever there was one. This wine is remarkable for the way
in which it combines intensity of flavour with a sublime delicacy and a precisely-judged
balance of focused, mouth-watering acidity with just enough sweetness to make
it seem almost dry. It tastes of lemon, honey and exotic spices, is just 9.5
per cent and costs just £9.50. - Helen Savage"

with just an edge of floral sweetness, this has bright herb-tinged flavours

"Pale gold, honeyed deliciousness. A treat!"
Mr Andrew Howe (17-Jul-2016)
"Riesling is my white grape of choice, and this is a delight -- not quite lime, not quite lemon, but the concentrated juice of a citrus fruit that only exists in the imagination. Perfect with smoked fish, and a bargain!"
Professor Alan Hertz (22-May-2016)
"This has to be one of the most enjoyable bottles of wine we have had in a long time. Delicious."
Mr Ralph Simpson (13-May-2016)
"This is a good example of a Saar valley riesling light but spritzig - for those who are not familiar with good German wines this is an excellent one to try. There is a broad range of superior German wines which are not available in this country from Baden and South Germany - but this one is and can be thoroughly recommended."
Mr Benjamin Cutler (15-Jan-2016)
"As a lovely mix of acid and fruity sugary sweetness, it's a good buy for the price with somewhat prevailing sharpness (although less dominant than in 2012) but still sufficiently prominent apples, grapes and freshness the region is famous for. For true wine-lovers and perfect Kabinett Riesling experience, spend the few extra pounds for a full von Kesselstatt experience, but open a bottle of this when hosting the less proficient. Goes well with leaner cuts of pork and richer cuts of poultry."

"Just off dry and very
grapey in flavour. A delicious light aperitif style German Riesling made
by the venerable Reh family of von Kesselstatt estate who own 36 hectares of
top quality vineyards in the Saar valley, a tributary of the Mosel. - Rose Murray Brown"
The Guardian (4th Jul 2015)
"The beauty of off-dry
German riesling is that not only can it handle spice (it’s a great foil for
Thai food, too), but it’s also wonderfully low in alcohol, making it ideal for
daytime drinking. The Wine Society’s mouth-wateringly grapey 2013 Saar Riesling
is just 10% abv and a bargain at £9.50.- Fiona Beckett"
2012 VINTAGE - MEMBER REVIEWS
"Ever so slightly too sharp and bitter for this style of wine in my opinion. The 2013 is, in my opinion, a much more balanced and better choice for the same price."
Mr Domen Presern (24-May-2015)
"A nice Riesling, however for our taste a little too sweet. Prob won't buy again, but if you like a medium wine this could be for you."
Mr Patrick Rooke (21-Feb-2015)
"If someone asked me to describe this wine, the first thoughts that come into my head would be refreshingly vibrant, slightly sweet , floral and pretty, (bit girly , I know) but that just about sums this wine up.
Described as Medium /off dry which I would disagree with, for me it was more like medium sweet although the sweetness wasn’t cloying or syrupy but surprisingly fresh and cleansed the palate beautifully.
Taste – as I said earlier this was quite sweet with a medium finish. There was a little bit of toffee apple about it, honey lockets but with tingly acidity.
Entry level it may be but overall it was very enjoyable."
Mr David Cronin (21-Jul-2014)
"An excellent elegant Riesling with perfect acidity. I would agree with the Society and say that this is medium-dry; it is certainly not a sweet wine. While the concentration of sugar can be determined scientifically the way we perceive that sugar can be swayed by personal experience and other factors such as the level of acidity present. Those who only drink dry wines may perceive this Riesling to be sweeter than it actually is."
Mr Richard Pfleger (06-Jan-2013)
"White flowers and honey on the nose. Very broad, almost chardonnay like mouthfeel. Acacia, chamomile and sweet sticky greengages on the palate. I could use a little more acidity here although this is still a soft, decent and interesting wine."
Mr William Davies (27-Sep-2011)
"In view of the discussion on alcoholic strenth of wines on the website, how about this for keeping below the limit? My wife and I find it delicious for drinking in the summer house on a fine summer's evening. Roll on "riesling in the summer house" weather. Each time we have it we have a discussion as to whether it is off dry or off sweet. Whatever it is, it is a favourite. Others in its family have an even lower level of alcohol."
Dr John P Allen (01-Jun-2011)
"I think medium dry is an inaccurate description; I think medium sweet is more accurate. I purchased this wine on the premise it was dry, it was not, and therefore I was disappointed when I tasted a sweet wine. If I was going to open a sweet wine, a rare event, it would be something from Bordeaux, or if Germany, maybe a Berenauslese. I would not recommend this wine as a sweet wine, and definitely not as a medium dry wine."
Mr John V A Matthews (18-May-2010)
"This slightly sweet, clear, and tasty wine is a delight to drink. We prefer it on its own without food, and well chilled.
It instantly takes us back to sunny days on the Rhine."
Mr Terence Allen (09-Aug-2009)
"It's good to have a wine which is lower in alcohol. It tastes fresh and yet has a certain amount of sweetness. A lovely summer wine which is great with a wide variety of food and also makes a good aperitif or can be drunk on its own."
Mrs Anne Marie Evans (07-Aug-2009)
"A wine with no metallic after taste and just on the sweet side. The ladies love this - we had it for our Golden Wedding with The Society's white burgundy as an alternative and large quantities of both all went. I keep this as a staple for entertaining and it is always a success.
"
Mr Roger Jeffries (06-Aug-2009)
"This is very quaffable for those like my wife who don't like their white wine too dry. While I generally prefer dry white I find this a very pleasant drink; so much so that I am going to order another case."
Roderick Ham Esq (05-Aug-2009)
"A very refreshing wine for summer, low in alcohol and keenly priced - excellent."
Mr William E Breeze (05-Aug-2009)
"A high quality wine which is basically dry but with plenty of fruit and substance. Not a sweet wine at all , it is superb before dinner on a warm evening or with salads or with fish or cold chicken and such like. Everyone who drank it obviously enjoyed it and, as result, I gave away more than we drank ourselves."
Mr A Pelham Burn (05-Aug-2009)

surprisingly dry (considering its low alcohol) steely riesling from the cool

very refreshing. - Rose Murray Brown
"
The Scotsman (10th Aug 2013)
"Lightly aromatic, nippy high acid, crisp and grapey with a soft fleshiness and a passing hint of sweetness in the mouth – so refined and racy. With only 11 per cent alcohol this is a perfect summer day pick-me-up riesling from Germany’s cooler Saar valley, a tributary of the Mosel. Annegret Reh and her family run the superb von Kesselstatt estate with top holdings in the Saar including Scharzhofberger vineyard.- Rose Murray Brown"
The Observer (16th Jun 2013)
"This German riesling from vineyards around the Saar tributary of the Mosel was made for wasting (but not wasted) afternoons in the garden. Low in alcohol (11%) but high in flavour, strong in acidity but soft as a ripe peach. - David Williams"
The Wine Gang (2nd May 2013)
"Enticing apple perfume and flavour with a hint of apple strudel sweetness and spice, a mineral undertow and tightwire acidity. "

JancisRobinson.com (4th Apr 2013)
"Brilliant texture, flavour and quality for the money. Such smoothness. Delicacy too. Herby flavours. Vibrant."
The Independent (Apr 2013)
"Mouthwatering, pointing up the virtues of this woefully undervalued variety, gentle … floral and satisfying. - Anthony Rose"
The Daily Mail (23rd Feb 2013)
"An effortlessly classy wine made by the exemplary team at von Kesselstatt, this beautiful, expressive wine is grapey, smooth and uplifting. With the merest kiss of sweetness on the finish it is a moreish, retro aperitif and it would also work stunningly with this week’s chicken and leek pie recipe. - Matthew Jukes"
