2018 VINTAGE - MEMBER REVIEWS
Mr George Leach (07-Jan-2021)
"3 star but fails to go further. For the price the Society Beaujolias-Villages 2018 is OK. Like a previous reviewer I did a like for like comparison with the Louis Jadot Beaujolias-Villages which is my fall back quaffer. I must concur the Louis Jadot wins hands down and for a few pounds more ( or less when on offer ) it will remain my fall back choice, and it has a cork ! . However, the Society Beaujolias-Villages isn't bad, the nose offers typical blackberry & cherry, the palate offers the usual Gamay fruitiness but everything about this seemed a little light or subdued in comparison with the Louis Jadot. I drank this over two nights with different food types and didn't notice any gains or fall offs. Nice enough but its a wine I won't be buying again. "
Mr Malcolm Battle (01-Dec-2020)
"Did a side by side taste test with the Louis jadot equivalent, which is 1 or 2 pounds more. The jadot is light years better. More structure, more balance. The WS version is insipid yet at the same time aggressive on the palate. "
Mr Philip Saunders (22-Nov-2020)
"Tight, good fruit, highly drinkable in large quantities. Great value Beaujolais."
Mr Jose Arevalo (10-Nov-2020)
"You get what you pay for - it's not a patch on the Exhibition Fleurie, but £3 a bottle cheaper. Very good for the money. A go to everyday wine I would venture . Light and fruity."
Dr Jeremy Platt (25-Oct-2020)
"Very pleasant Beaujolais, fruity and supple. Lightly chilled it was incredibly drinkable. As part of a mixed case, I didn't know the price per bottle and was expecting something in the region of £9. At £7.95 I would say this is great value and I will certainly order again!"
Mr Matt Ridley (13-Sep-2020)
"Not for me,I found it lacking in flavour and depth."
Ms Anne Horne (06-Sep-2020)
"A really pleasant village Beaujolais with decent cherry and bramble notes. Perhaps a little thin on the finish which knocked one star off for me. Having said that, it's a very respectable wine at the price and very drinakable at room temperature with or without food."
Mr George Clothier (02-Sep-2020)
"Fruity, smooth and easy to drink. "
Mr Andrew Saunders (25-Aug-2020)
"A medium to lighter bodied wine, with a good balance of tannins, acidity and fruit flavours. Dominated by black cherry but with blackberry and dark fruit in the mix. Tastes like it's meant to be drunk young. Very pleasant."
Mr John Lay (12-Aug-2020)
"Not too jammy, and a bit more serious a wine than its price would suggest. At cellar temperature it went very well with a chicken and roast tomato patio supper. Note that it has a sediment! Great value."
Mr Richard J Wyndham (09-Aug-2020)
"Medium-bodied and easy drinking. Good value at the price but lacks the punch of some (even slightly more expensive alternatives) can’t quibble at this price, however. "
Dr John Norman (23-Jul-2020)
"In recent times I have been trying some lighter reds and found this one to be very drinkable, so not surprising to see it has a silver medal to its name. I enjoyed my bottle, and, at the price I will certainly be buying it again."
Mr Hugh McKeachan (22-Jul-2020)
"Good value. Easy drinking Beaujolais. Possibly goes down a bit too easily so if you wanted a longer lasting bottle, this may be a little uncomplicated. "
Mr Martin Wingate (21-Jul-2020)
"Had this with Dr Rob on Lundy. Was OK and reasonably priced would order again."
Mr Kevin Scott (14-Jul-2020)
"I'm definitely not an expert on Beaujolais-Villages, but I thoroughly enjoyed this wine! It was really easy drinking, great flavour and a bargain in my opinion. Will definitely be buying again."
Mrs Sarah McAuliffe (06-Jul-2020)
"I am happy to reiterate the other positive reviews for this wine. 20 minutes in the fridge, and this definitely hits the spot. A lovely fruity crunch, with a bit of structure and only 13%. I mean really, what’s not to like?! "
Mr Peter Minns (29-Jun-2020)
"I'm a big Beaujolais fan and this wine is great, particularly for the price. It's as good as much more expensive wines from the region.
It's light but it has body and depth - really excellent."
Mr Stephen Foster (19-Jun-2020)
"One can pay a lot for mediocre beaujolais, this is excellent value, soft fruit with some backbone .Well done WS "
Mr Dennis Greenslade (17-Jun-2020)
"Just as I expected very light and quaffable - again great value wine"
Mr John Atkins (15-Jun-2020)
"Very enjoyable for weekday drinking, and real value for money. A real gem in the Society's portfolio. Tried three bottles and now ordered a case. But don't tell too many people about it. "
Prof Tom Watson (07-May-2020)
"Top quality Beaujolais villages, dark fruits, well balanced, tastes like Beaujolais should and if honest I preferred it to the society
‘s exhibition Fleurie that we drank a couple of days before this. Excellent value, I will be buying more"
Mr Graham Farrant (19-Apr-2020)
"Bought this on spec based on previous member reviews and not disappointed. The depth of flavour suggests a higher strength than it has at 13%. I can only echo other positive reviews - a really delicious wine. "
Mr Keith Ricketts (16-Apr-2020)
"For the price this was just great. We had it with take away haddock & chips in these trying times. Full flavoured and nice and smooth. Typical gamay taste not too strong so went well with the fish. Will buy again.
"
Mr Richard Barwick (28-Mar-2020)
"Great Beaujolais-Village, vibrant bramble fruit.
Superb with Shepherds Pie. Highly recommended.
"
Mr Malcolm J Davies (18-Mar-2020)
"Oh, yes, yes, yes!! Buy this and you will not be sorry: simple, flavourful, partners with anything on a Sunday and is so moreish it should be a crime. Top hole! "
Mr Daniel Moran (25-Feb-2020)
"Wife and I enjoyed a bottle over a couple of nights without food. We thought it was excellent value and well balanced ( not too much fruit). Quite strong or at least alcohol content seemed high. Excellent value will order again."
Mr John Oakley (24-Sep-2019)
"I had to work hard on this wine. I took it straight from storage and when I opened it the first thing I got was vinegar to the nose. I poured a glass and struggled to find any of the notes described on the bottle. However, I then chilled it down to around 12-ish degrees and it transformed to a really good plonk. Instantly get black cherry on the nose and after some time the flavours start to emerge.
Quite a good wine but I really had to put in some effort to get the best from it. "
Mr Gareth Rowberry (10-Aug-2019)
"The Society's notes say all you need to know, "The 2018 has an intense, vibrant black-fruit perfume, and is a classic Beaujolais-Villages with good balance and a ripe yet fresh palate". I shall certainly be buying more."
Mr Nigel Skelsey (25-Jun-2019)
"Blackberry and cherry .Medium bodied, fresh with a refreshing zing.Best served after twenty minutes in the fridge. Chicken on the label, this summery wine goes really well with roast chicken. An uptick above ordinary Beaujolais "
Mr Paul Davies (08-Jun-2019)
"A lovely wine with more to it than you would expect from a Beaujolais-Villages at this price.
Bramble fruit on the nose that combine with juicy dark cherries and a medium and grippy tannin edge; perfect for a burger, a nice ribeye from the BBQ or even something more fancy.
Would be very interesting to cellar some as there is enough tannin and acid for it to age well, would be interested to try some in a couple of years but I very much doubt it will last that long in the wine rack!
Well done to the buyers."

"With its generally
modest alcohol, floral perfume, succulent drinkability and come-hither summer
berry flavours, Beaujolais Villages makes for stimulating drinking in the
warmer weather, This one is refreshing, easy-going and extremely moreish, with
tons of sappy and tongue-tingling red summer-pudding berry fruit. Pop it in the
fridge for 30 minutes before opening to give it a bit of extra pep. Very easy
to drink, and great with cold meats, coq au vin, sausages and mash or a chunk
of Epoisses. Good, clean - and very gluggable - summer fun. - James Viner"
The Oldie (23rd Jul 2020)

to go with [vitello tonnato] is a lightly chilled red. I found success with …

"This is a great recent find. we have bought more."
Dr Celia A Caulcott (26-Apr-2019)
"Mixed feelings about this one. I enjoyed it as a refreshing fruity uncomplicated wine if not a very memorable one. My wife found a tasting note of sweet vanilla that she didn’t like. She described it as a bit like artificial raspberry and vanilla ice cream in a glass. "
Mr Malcolm Venter (06-Apr-2019)
"A nice colour and nose. Quite fruity and hangs around in the mouth. Goes with just about everything. Not quite as smooth as in the past ."
Mr Charles D Hinks (04-Mar-2019)
"We thoroughly enjoyed this wine and have reordered "
Mr Ian Boak (03-Mar-2019)
"Its simple: drink this, cook Sunday lunch while drinking this, then drink this some more and forget its Monday.....at some point. Then, drink more of this 'old school' wine. Its great with slow cooked brisket, fruity desserts, and gauloises. "
Mr Daniel Moran (26-Jan-2019)
"I usually look forward to the Society's Beaujolais Villages. Unfortunately this one did not quite hit the spot. I didn't find it as smooth and drinkable as usual."
Mr Tim Baker (28-Dec-2018)
"There simply isn't a wine drinking situation when i wouldn't be happy to drink this. What would i do if the Wine Soc ever let this Society standard slip!?! In the nicest possible way there is nothing outstanding about this wine in my view, but I think that is part of it's quality - there's enough interest in there to be pleasurable, while having very little that could offend any palate."
Mr Robin Lambert (19-Dec-2018)
"Got exactly what we expected from the bottle
Recommended"
Mr Steven Foster (09-Dec-2018)

Mr Hugo Allen-Stevens (23-Oct-2018)
"No nonsense good value Beaujolais. I should drink more of it."
Mr Tristan Ward (04-Aug-2018)
"I love a good Beaujolais... not being an expert I would have turned my nose up at one that only cost 7.50, but this was lovely. Great for guilt free quaff and guests you don't really like that much! "
Miss Joanne Povey (31-Jul-2018)
"This is our go-to wine. It is fruity, full bodied and easy drinking. It seems to go with everything we eat - especially a Sunday roast (and crisps weirdly). Yes, it has blackcurrant tones as other people have described but it's sour tones are balanced and not over powering. It's an affordable tasty red, good for hot sunny days and cold evenings in front of the fire. The only thing bad about this wine is that it seems to go too quickly!"
Mr Daniel Moran (24-Jul-2018)
"Colour: Deep ruby with a purple rim.
Aroma: Pleasant and youthful, raspberry, cherry, cranberries, redcurrants, plums, banana and pepper.
Taste: Light and fruity, low in tannin and alcohol with brisk acidity. Sour cherry, violets and peppercorn flavours with banana and pepper evident on the nice somewhat succulent finish.
Overall: Very nice, juicy, light, fresh and fruity, great drinking on a warm evening. The finish is delicious. For the price this wine delivers, a good Beaujolais, highly recommend."
Mr Gabriel Higgins (28-May-2018)
"Beautiful ruby Ribena colour with a fruit burst in your mouth of “loud” ripe sweet black fruit and a perfumed finish. Really light and easy summer drinking. Very quaffable."

"With its typical
light body and whisper of banana fruit, the delightful [Society’s

are well supported by suggestions of beetroot, ginger and cocoa that should
delight wine drinkers by the dozen. - Brian Elliott"

"If you haven't
already rediscovered Beaujolais, it really is about time. This
under-appreciated region offers cracking value, especially alongside such a good-looking
vintage as this one (despite a frosty spring and summer hail). Added to which
this fits the current feel for lighter alcohol (just 12.5%). less tannin and a
certain refreshment factor, even in reds. Here you have juicy fresh dark
cherries with just a faint hint of talc-like tannin for frame and silky
texture. All with a core of refreshing acidity. Drink with salami and semi-soft
cheeses. - Sally Easton"

enjoyed a run of good vintages, as this edition from the southern end of the
region shows. I loved its silky texture and sweet red cherry and berry fruit —
the perfect match for cured meats. - Jane MacQuitty"

"Rock bottom Bojo is a
funny old category of wine because they are usually dreary, confected and
comedic. This wine is anything but, with silky strawberry and red cherry
fruit and a slippery, juicy finish. It is effortless drinking and would be
a favourite among white wine fans, too, because it is so light and friendly. - Matthew Jukes"

"This is very easy on the pallet with pleasant aromas and tastes. It is easy daily drinking wine but not challenging so leaves a little to be desired. Whilst it coats the tongue with a gentle and fruity warmth, I would prefer a wine that took you to the border and crashed through it inviting you to follow in its wake. I think I would prefer a chunky Pinot Noir to accompany some nineteenth century literature and a cigar. This however, is merely my personal opinion. Discuss."

"5 stars for the bouquet and 3 for the taste. Needs to be slightly chilled. Not very remarkable but very drinkable"
Mr Tom Rodger (22-Oct-2017)
"Slightly disappointing - an OK wine - we much prefered the Stephane Aviron Beaujolais Villages which I had ordered previously.
It was served slightly chilled - and decanted for a short while to allow to breathe but was a little bland."
Mr Alan Pieroni (17-Oct-2017)
"Absolutely straight-down-the-line Beaujolais: young enough to have just a slight edge of apple skin tannin, rounded and with a nicely balanced acidity. TWS have a superb range of Beaujolais (some costing 2 of 3 times as much) of which this entry level BJL is an absolute delight and shouldn't be overlooked - it's lovely in a large glass to let the aroma develop."
Mr Tim Potts (15-Aug-2017)
"Absolutely classic Beaujolais with the freshness and lightness of nouvea and the bottom of Morgon. Well done. Perfect summer drinking and supper wine, if not dinner. Amazing price!"
Mr Charles Stokes (03-Jul-2017)
"I love Gamay and have found the Society's villages wine is usually good value, but I think the 2016 is exceptionally good. Has the light fruit freshness, not too much sweetness, and acidity in balance. A great barbecue bottle slightly chilled. Definitely will buy more."

"If your judgements
about Beaujolais are based on the poor quality, bubble gum flavoured Nouveau of
30 years ago - think again. This is a lovely, inexpensive, example of how good
the region's wines can be. The smooth, cranberry, raspberry and red cherry fruit
is delightfully supplemented by nippy acidity with hints of clove, liquorice
and cocoa. Overall it exudes freshness and lightness together with really
appealing floral touches. - Brian Elliott"

"A cracking summer red
which has a soft perfume of strawberry fruit with a little rose petal floral

finish lends a more serious note to this great little gamay. - Neil Cammies"

Beaujolais-Villages, which is priced just £7.50, certainly gets a cross in our

"Wines labelled
Beaujolais Villages are a step above the basic Beaujolais appellation (and that
strange beast Beaujolais Nouveau). Beaujolais wines are made in a special way
which produces fruit-forward jammy wines from the gamay grape and this example
is bang on the money. It is ruby red, medium bodied (you can see your fingers
through it) with redcurrant and raspberry characters. It is laid-back and
easy-drinking; light enough to enjoy on its own, or with crispy sausages and
charcoal scrunched chicken. - Jane Clare"

"Snap it up!
Beaujolais is rightly deserving of a renaissance, and it is an ideal
destination for anyone looking for modesty of both tannin and alcohol in their
red wines. This one rocks in at a mere 12.5%, with a lightness of tannin that
allows primary fruit to be the focus. The wine is fresh and juicily flavoursome
in crunchy-fresh cranberries and red cherries, as befitting the gamay grape. A
hint of violet on the nose adds perfume to this gentle, un-showy wine. Drink
with antipasti. - Sally Easton"

"A fresh summer red.
Made from the gamay grape, this is a medium-bodied fruity red, aromatic, with
lots of black fruit but refreshing and, as Beaujolais has always been thought
of as a bistro wine, it will go well with a wide variety of dishes. With a
screw top you can take it to the beach and plonk it in the sand, or just out to
the garden to enjoy with your BBQ chicken salads, sausages, you name it.- Paula Gracey"

"This is an okay wine but unless my palate deceives me (which it quite often does) it is not as good as the previous vintage and it strikes me as having rather a sharp edge. But it remains quite drinkable and is reasonably priced."

Mr Robert Summers (20-Jun-2016)
"On the nose there's quite pungent raspberries and strawberries. On the palette more of the same and flavours of red/purple confectionery I guess from carbonic maceration. Then there's some lovely earthy/mushroom tanginess. The whole flavour profile is wrapped in a lovely browned caramel presence/mouth feel. It's very easy for a light Beaujolais around this price point to be thin or sour which this is certainly not. I recently bought a Louis Jadot Gamay from the supermarket for about £10 and this is in a different league is terms of pure quality. Another great wine from The Wine Society."
Mr Anthony O'Halloran (17-Jun-2016)
"The 12.5% alcohol is a nice change from the usual toxic 14s. It's a fairly simple wine without much depth but that doesn't stop it being a pleasant and easy to drink wine. As with other reviewers, the temptation to open a second bottle is always there."
Dr Dyfrig M Davies (26-Apr-2016)
"To my palate, thin and very sweet. Berry flavour reminiscent of hubba bubba. Not keen."
Mr Christian Marney (23-Mar-2016)
"Juicy, refreshing and moreish. I love that it's only 12.5% although I find myself reaching for another a glass, undoing the lowish alcohol benefits. A classic bistro wine. Lovely!"

"How about a
Beaujolais. An excellent example of is The Wine Society's Beaujolais-Villages -
a fruity number, with lively sappy character, and a drink so refreshing that
another glass is called for. And another.
Some cheap and nasty Beaujolais in more recent commercial times have deserved
moans and groans - #firstworldproblems - but get a quality one and all is soon
well with the world. The Society's Beaujolais-Villages blend is such an
example, with its £7.50 price tag already comforting. Moreover, it goes with
top-notch comfort food, such as fried chicken or bangers and mash swimming in
gravy. There is enough about it to pair with charcuterie and fancy fowl, too,
while it is also one of those reds - best served cool - that you can enjoy with
fish. Either way, a few glasses of this and all of a sudden things aren't so
gloomy after all. - Peter Martini"

Beaujolais in Britain. Cracking with coq au vin or serve chilled as a sofa
sipper. - Olly Smith"
York Press (Apr 2013)
"Affordable and capable. It’s nice and round with plenty of red fruit flavours. - Mike Tipping"
The Wine Gang (Mar 2013)
"On the light side of medium-bodied, vibrant in colour and flavour, with juicy cherry, raspberry and black fruit flavours – classic Villages Gamay produced by Jacques Depagneux with the aid of some fruit from Juliénas. Worth trying with salmon, as well as with bloomy rind and semi-soft cheeses which can be difficult to match to wine. Goes with: Charcuterie and cold meats, Chicken, Aperitif wine."
