2019 VINTAGE - MEMBER REVIEWS
"A nice white which is an easy drinker with a fresh feel, that then hits with floral flavours. This is my first Greek wine and I am impressed."
Miss Emilia Fairfax (22-Feb-2021)
"Not being very familiar with Greek wines I was pleased and surprised by the quality, flavour and complexity of this white. I really liked the fact that it was different. The grape varieties were unknown to me so I had no idea of what to expect other than from reading members' reviews. To me this tasted a bit like an understated Viognier which is fine by me as I don't especially like the overtly floral flavours of that grape. This could easily become a house white and I'll certainly get some more and perhaps make further ventures into Greek wines."
Mr Stuart Thomson (26-Jan-2021)
"Great value for under £10. Very quaffable will be ordering again !"
Mr Steven Evans (15-Jan-2021)
"Aromatic with hint of pear citrus honeysuckle. Light and refreshing but not too light "
Mr Peter J H Devlin (12-Jan-2021)
"I have been most impressed by this wine over the Christmas holiday. I think The Wine Society should be looking even more closely into Greek wines."
Dr D M Parker (07-Jan-2021)
"Full of citrus and gooseberry plus summer flowers. Very refreshing. Of similar impact but likeable different alternative to Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. "
Dr Richard E S Gray (02-Jan-2021)
"It’s delicious. Greek holidays in a bottle and I could drink a bottle on its own! It’s floral, light but lingering, not dry but nor is it sweet. It is simply very enjoyable if you are open to something different. NOT retsina at all, though nothing wrong with that with barbecue kebabs!"
Mrs Jacqueline Davies (12-Dec-2020)
"Really great value for money on offer here.
Delicate nose of melon and grapefruit, slightly floral too.
Citrus zing on the palate, with more grapefruit on show, balancing nicely the sweeter elements of honeysuckle and rosewater."
Mr Addam Merali-Hosiene (11-Dec-2020)
"I was pleased to see this listed, my Sister lives in Greece and we have enjoyed many excellent Greek wines with her. This is a wine I would be more than happy to try with her on a summers day in the Greek sunshine. Lovely light floral notes, dry but fresh with a nice balanced acidity although lacks depth . Three stars in November four in the summer ."
Mr Graham Gayler (05-Dec-2020)
"Delicious, very quaffable, will order again!"
Mr Jerry Snell (03-Dec-2020)
"Enjoyed this wine very much. Pale lemon colour. Aromatic, floral and peach with a touch of almond. Nice balance of stone fruit with a citrusy finish. Brilliant aperitif. "
Mr Shaun Hodgkins (22-Nov-2020)
"Lovely aromatic wine with zippy acidity. In the heat of Summer it might be 4 stars, but ambiance is important with this wine style, and November in UK maybe doesn't do it justice."
Mr Colin Mitchell (17-Nov-2020)
"As this was recommended by somebody in the Society I thought why not try it. I ordered six bottles. I opened the first bottle and could not believe what was inside.
It was not a taste I had expected from the Society. I later gave a glass to a friend. We both know our wines. The contents were considered unpleasant. The remaining bottles were returned to the Society who kindly refunded the purchase.
"
Mr Brian Fokes (15-Nov-2020)
"Before ordering this, I spoke with a Greek friend in Athens who advised that I buy one bottle only: "It will be different", he said. It was, and the Society's Greek White 2019 just wasn't our taste in white wine. The bottle wasn't finished.
My wine vocabulary isn't big enough to describe why we didn't enjoy it. The wine is young and seems well made but is about 90 degrees different in style from modern wines. It reminded me of the rather intense white wines from the Balkans in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It's the Wine Society's role to introduce us to different wines, so please try it but don't expect the easy drinking white wine that we are so accustomed to."
Prof Tom Watson (13-Nov-2020)
"Avoid strong tasting food with this one. It's not robust, but it's very aromatic and distinctive - just the sort of interesting wine that the Wine Society is all about."
Professor Stephen Babbage (28-Oct-2020)
"Lovely light, crisp wine. Flavours of honey and melon. Ideal for an al fresco summer lunch."
Mr Trevor Davies (20-Oct-2020)
"Id actually give it 3 and 1/2 stars if I could... super floral on the nose, the honeyed fruit comes along well on the palate but it remains dry, crisp & balanced. Enjoyable, but lacking length and intensity hence if I could take 1/2 a star off I would! "
Mr Daniel Lindsay (16-Oct-2020)
"I'm delighted to agree with the majority of members. I have rarely drunk Greek white wines and wasn't sure what to expect, but this is a lovely wine, either on its own or with fish and seafood. "
Mr Steven Bliss (04-Oct-2020)
"Grapefruit with a touch of honeyed richness. We really enjoyed our first glass or two but by the end of the bottle the acidity was too much. "
Mr Colin Hewson (13-Sep-2020)
"Leave any preconceptions about old school Retsina behind, and don't be scared of the unfamiliar grapes. This is a thoroughly modern and clean white, which is well worthy of the Wine Society label. Refreshing and crisp, it would be great with seafood or chicken but is fine on its own as a pleasant quaffer. Anyone who likes Italian whites would be happy with this, and I think it's good value too."
Dr Robin W D Mitchell (11-Sep-2020)
"I have lived in Greece for 20 years and this wine takes me right back to bottom of the shelf Retsina from the old days.
Proper acid gut rot."
Mr Richard Burfitt (04-Sep-2020)
"This took me straight back to the wonderful beach taverna in Olympiada ,drinking lovely Greek white wine. This wine is even better.Wonderful aroma, complex ,but friendly and approachable.Really refreshing and even if we cannot easily visit Greece at the moment ,this is the next best thing!"
Mr Paul Davies (03-Sep-2020)
Mr Michael J Cooke (31-Aug-2020)
"VG. Tastes a lot like a Sauvignon blanc . It won't be my last Greek white, as another contributor said! Retsina it is not."
Dr Jeremy Platt (29-Aug-2020)
"Exactly as described. Crisp acidity, honeysuckle and peach on the nose with grapefruit notes on the palate. Yet again TWS have nailed it.
"
Mr Will Irvine (29-Aug-2020)
"My wife sneaked a couple of bottles of this in to my basket when I said she could finish off the order with her penchant for white wine. I was very pleasantly surprised. This wine has a good a balance of acidity balanced with an amazingly lingering taste of a bowl of assorted fruit - melon, gooseberry some grapefuit and a little over ripe lemon"
Mr Rory A O'Hegarty (19-Aug-2020)
"This is excellent. Crisp and refreshing. Even though the weather has turned from sunshine to mizzle, a glass or two of this wine makes me feel warm and sunny."
Mr Darryl Corney (15-Aug-2020)
"This is a marvellous first Greek white bottling for the WS. I've tasted and stayed at Semeli winery and although they and others have made great Moschifileros, this blend with 45% Roditis really adds to the structure and zing of the wine. My perfect summer white at 12%. More please!"
Mr Bill Rae (13-Aug-2020)
"Lovely. Aromatic, fruity, but with a good mineral backbone and some refreshing acidity. Beautifully made, this is exceptional value."
Mr Stephen Edwards (11-Aug-2020)
"Brilliant.
TWS description is pretty accurate - on the nose it's 2 (of 9) dry, but in the mouth bone dry. Lovely honeysuckle notes. This is THE summer wine for 2020 & a credit to TWS buyers. Love the artwork on the front."
Mr Tim Potts (31-Jul-2020)
"This could well be my first Greek wine and after trying it, won't be the last. It's delicious and aromatic.
It's a gorgeous quaffer. Made at Semeli in Nemea, it's a blend of 55% moschofilero and 45% roditis. Both new to me.
Colour in the glass is pale lemon. The intensity on the nose is medium(+) with notes of pear, grapefruit, melon and apple vinegar. On the palate, Apple, honeysuckle, grapefruit and a little minerality.
It's dry, light-bodied with medium acidity. The finish is very long."
Mr Paul O'Keeffe (31-Jul-2020)
"Crisp with an undertone of floral. That was enough for Judith not to like it too much.
I thought it was very nice and a bargain and the introductory offer of £7.95"
Mr Simon Bourke (21-Jul-2020)
"Very refreshing crisp wine, ‘Honey and melon’. Reminds me of times away on Greek islands!
Perfect on its own or with sardines ."
Mr Philip Straw (16-Jul-2020)

"A delightful, breezy,
aromatic white with ginger and white pepper spice notes, citrus and floral
flavours and racy acidity. It’s a blend of moschofilero and roditis made by
Seméli and would be as welcome on Boxing Day as it is at the height of the
summer. Serve as an apéro or with salads and shellfish. - Joanna Simon"

"Pretty, bright and
delicate, this Greek white is also packed with flavour. There's a citrus core
with dried herbs, a touch of fennel and a pink grapefruit flourish on the
finish. - Jamie Goode"

"This blend of
moschofilero and roditis from Leonidas Nassiakos in Semeli, Nemea, is pretty,
bright and delicate, yet still has plenty of flavour. It has a citrus core with
dried herbs and a touch of fennel, finishing with a pink grapefruit flourish. - Jamie Goode"

The Wine Society has just released a Greek wine
under its own label for the first time ,,, a blend of moschofilero and
roditis in a seductively floral vein. One to sit and sip on the last of the
light summer evenings.

"When I was in Greece
last year I drank buckets of local wine and got quite a taste for it, even
though I found the grape varieties impossible to understand let alone
pronounce. This info will mean no more to you than it does to me, but just for
the record it’s a blend of moschofilero and roditis. It’s light, lively and
refreshing with deliciously honeyed citrus fruit and is one of those very rare
wines that’s just as inviting back home in Blighty on a rain-drenched August
evening as it was when first encountered by a sun-dappled pool in Corfu. - Jonathan Ray"
JancisRobinson.com (12th Aug 2020)
"The aroma is marked
by the Moschofilero with scented honeysuckle and zesty grapefruit but there's
also a touch of spice and stony minerality. Beautifully aromatic without being
OTT – more inviting than the Society's English white just tasted. Relatively
soft and gentle on the palate, fresh enough and the acidity is deceptive,
higher than I thought at first, and thus brings the wine into harmony. Pretty,
gentle, floral wine with enough freshness and a touch of spice on the finish to
give it more than just aroma. Decent length for the price but a summer wine to
enjoy without having to pay too much attention. Good value. 16/20 Julia Harding MW"

The Society's first own-label Greek wine, new in
the range. Moschofilero gives aromatic fruit and the roditis structure and
acidity. Made by Semeli Estate from grapes grown at 700-800m, it's got great
typicity - firm, citrussy and floral aromatics, with a lovely sappy and
mineral quality.

"... their first own
label Greek wine from The Wine Society is a great buy and also upliftingly
aromatic ... made from the indigenous moschofilero and roditis grapes by the
well regarded Semeli outfit, close to Corinth on the mainland; bracingly dry
and packed with refreshing flavours of grapefruit, citrus and honeysuckle. - Terry Kirby"
Yorkshire Post (18th Jul 2020)
"
There is a lot more to Greek wine than retsina.
This comes from Nemea in the northern part of the Peloponnese and is a blend
of the moschofilero and roditis grapes. The flavours are crisp with notes of
white blossom, honeysuckle, citrus and a bite of astringency which makes this
one to pair with grilled fish, especially if there are olives on the plate. - Christine Austin

"The 50 best summer
wines: Floral and yet also refreshing: smelling this is like putting your nose
into a bunch of blowsy roses with sharp riffs of white grapefruit and lemon
rind going on in the background. The two grapes are moschofilero and roditis
and the wine is made for TWS by Semeli Estate in Nemea. - Victoria Moore"

"This is The Wine
Society's first own-label Greek wine. The blend of moschofilero and roditis is
a hit, the moschofilero giving aromatic fruit and the roditis structure and
acidity. Made by the respected producer Semeli Estate from grapes grown at
700m-800m, it's got great typicity – firm, citrussy and floral aromatics, with
a lovely sappy and mineral quality. The roditis stops it from being too blowsy.
Clean as a whistle, food friendly and great value. 91/100 Amy Wislocki"
