2018 VINTAGE - MEMBER REVIEWS
"I concur with other reviewers. This is a great big Spanish red and goes with pretty much anything or nothing! Excellent value. Don't expect much refinement, but, hey, at under £6 no complaints from here!"
Dr Jeremy Platt (27-Jun-2020)
"Lovely everyday red, if a little strong"
Mr Conor Bradley (29-May-2020)
"Great value everyday wine. Benefits from a little care about opening and breathing. Strong at 14% so gently does it. I came to this wine after an odd visit to the region (don't ask) and very much enjoyed the town's wine trails and tapas routes on foot. Two cracking restaurants both serving wines from the immediate region and this is my third repeat order here. The gossip in the town was that a nearby much better known Spanish wine would buy Jumilla to make up/blend with their wine in shortfall years. Jumilla wine stands on its own in my view."
Mr Chris Thompson (20-Apr-2020)
"I've ordered this wine at least four times. Enough said?"
Mr Kevin Raftery (19-Apr-2020)
"Tried this a couple of years ago and thought it was a bit rough.I am glad I chose to revisit it.The first taste from the first glass of the 2018 (yes I have a bottle )was uninspiring but left for 30 mins made such a difference.Okay it is not one I would offer guests but as a weekday standby it takes some beating particularly at this price point. I know Monastrell is a challenging grape but it is obviously in good hands here. Not much on the nose but fruity on the palate and a satisfying finish. Not as heavy as described in my view but that is not a criticism - medium to well done if it were a steak.A good balanced red - be great with pizza , pasta ,chorizo and hard cheeses.Happy member tonight."
Mr Keith G Napier (23-Mar-2020)
"A great full-bodied everyday red from Spain.
Dry, slightly austere finish. I will add a few bottles to my next order. "
Mr Malcolm J Davies (13-Mar-2020)
"With the Prof on this one. Reasonable value, inoffensive, but nothing memorable. "
Dr Philip Dodd (08-Mar-2020)
"Possibly the best value wine the Wine Society sell. Not complicated, just lovely fruit forward easy drinking wine at a great price"
Mr Jonathan Taylor (22-Feb-2020)
"Pleasantly surprised. Full Bodied, quite tangy, nice tannins. Great to try for £6 a bottle. A good example of a great wine society pick for this price range. Worth a try"
Mr Greig P Godfrey (10-Feb-2020)
"Harmless, but ordinary. Reasonable value at £5.95, but I want to drink reds that are better than this."
Professor Stephen Babbage (30-Jan-2020)
"Best value sub £6 red wine I've found. Full bodied, rich and remarkably complex for the price."
Mr Colin Mitchell (14-Jan-2020)
Mr Nick Archer (03-Jan-2020)
"Really great wine for this price, fruity and easy to drink on its own but also has body to make it interesting"
Mr Michael Simpson (27-Dec-2019)
"A beautiful wine, leaves a black cherry and raspberry aftertaste, with this quality the wines are normally priced £3 to £5 more, great value, will be reordering"
Mr Martin Reeves (18-Dec-2019)
"Extraordinarily great value. Fruity, smooth drinking. Well balanced. Good enough to drink alone but sufficient depth to accompany spicy dishes."
Mr James Bowkett (13-Dec-2019)
"Lovely wine which works with food and on it's own. Full bodied and very drinkable. Another of my favourites. "
Mrs Carol Clark (25-Nov-2019)
"Currently the cheapest of The Society own label range, but don’t let this put you off. Delicious with paella and would certainly go well with spicy curries as an alternative to many peoples preferential whites or beers. "
Mr Shane Keen (23-Nov-2019)
"Pretty good cheap easy-drinking red. Probably not as smooth as last year's offering; but I'll be ordering again."
Mr Richard Hadfield (17-Nov-2019)
"Yumm - this is a lovely midweek autumn wine. Punches well above its price tag."
Ms Kate Bines (15-Oct-2019)
"I was pleasantly surprised with this wine, I've tried Juan Gil's 4 Meses previously and was worried that this might be an inferior wine, but worried I needn't be.
For a sub £6, everyday red I don't think you can go wrong.
Throw a bottle or two in your basket and give it try. "
Mr Adam Tomlinson (21-Sep-2019)
"Brilliant value for a good full flavour. Each bottle seems to get better as time goes by."
Mr Richard Fifield (19-Sep-2019)
Mr Dominic Murphy (12-Sep-2019)
"I was hoping for something with more dark fruit about it. To my taste, this was rather bitter. For a weekday, ferial red, I think there are better options out there."
Rev Liam Beadle (29-Aug-2019)
"A fabulous wine at a very reasonable price. Big, smooth and long lasting after taste. Goes very well with hearty meals also spicey meals. I will keep buying this wine."
Mr Stewart Biggart (03-Aug-2019)
"Quite dark colour.Well priced and good quality.Own label denotes reliability"
Mr Terence Furnivall (25-Jul-2019)
2017 VINTAGE - MEMBER REVIEWS
"Unexciting name, but it is a well-made, bright, slightly spicy, berry-flavoured wine. As you might expect, it goes well with tapas, particularly chorizo and dishes with smoked paprika. "
Prof John Gladman (16-Sep-2019)
"Very disappointed with this wine,no real depth ,tart and too dry for my liking. The nearby region of Bullas has much nicer reds"
Mr Chris McCann (10-Sep-2019)
"This wine represents great value for money. Plenty of fruit and body. Perfect all round Spanish red."
Mr John Hutton (28-Aug-2019)
"I know this price-bracket is not the Society's forte, but first impression is of a drinkable but absolutely unexceptional red. Noticeably dry, not 'round', no very obvious fruit or spice flavours. Far from complex - if you were to imagine a generic cheap-and-cheerful Mediterranean red, it would come close to this. 2nd day: much the same. Perfectly ok, but unmemorable. There are plenty of better-value, much more interesting reds in the shops at this price or less."
Mr Stephen Butler (26-Aug-2019)
"Purchased 'blind' but I was pleasantly surprised. A very good 'every day red wine', plenty of flavour and a good price."
Mr Robin C Garrard (06-Jul-2019)
"I am a fan! Excellent value and very good everyday drinking wine"
Mr Michael Cooke (04-Jul-2019)
"Very good value wine. Smooth, easy drinking wine. Recommend"
Mr Stuart Humphries (31-May-2019)
"This is really tasty, easy drinking wine, with some depth of flavour. At £5.75 a bottle it is an absolute steal. "
Mr Chris Clipson (27-May-2019)
"Earthy taste which was disappointing. Better reds available at this price point. Would not re-order."
Mr Nathan Whittamore (25-May-2019)
"An excellent wine at this price!"
Mr David B Ronaldson (06-May-2019)
"a great accompaniment to roast lamb, pasta dishes or pigeon, and like all society wine, so reliable"
Mr Peter Leddy (26-Apr-2019)
"I really wanted to like this wine. A grape I love at a ridiculously good price. Unfortunately it was too good to be true. Bitter tannins and hot alcoholic mouth feel. No finesse."
Mr Malcolm Venter (12-Apr-2019)
"I reviewed a previous vintage, and I still don't think I have ever drunk such a great value wine. This is a perfect combination of fruit, grip, acidity, tannin and length, savoury enough but not too dry. Astonishing for a sub-£6 bottle, and goes with most foods but drinks just as perfectly on its own - if I tasted blind I would have guessed £8-10, and it compares favourably with wines costing more than that. Has been our 'house' red for a number of years, and while each vintage varies a little, is an absolute stalwart. Great work from the maker and TWS buyer here."
Mr Neil Cooper (06-Apr-2019)
"Probably the best value the wines soc sells. "
Mr Geoffrey Tong (31-Mar-2019)
"Nothing to add to previous reviews - Best value red wine available."
Mr Colin Mitchell (30-Mar-2019)
"I agree with one of the other reviewers. This was too bitter, but it is hard to be too demanding at this price!"
Mr Ray Mount (28-Mar-2019)
"I really wanted to like this... would have an excellent budget staple. But alas just not for me even for the price there was just something too bitter about it. "
Miss Joanne Povey (20-Mar-2019)
"This is excellent value for money. [Another Merchant] does a Spanish red called The Guv'nor which is one of their most popular, value for money, reds - sells out very quickly every time they get new stock. This is very close and cheaper."
Mr Allan Jellett (08-Mar-2019)
"This is a well made wine, from an unusual grape variety. Unfortunately,it is not to my taste:it may well be to yours."
Mr Nigel Marriott (18-Feb-2019)
"What more could you ask for at this price- excellent value."
Mr John Glyde (08-Feb-2019)
"Excellent value weeknight drinking "
Mr Solomon Roberts (09-Jan-2019)
"This wine is fantastic value for under £6 a bottle. Fruity, pretty well balanced and surprisingly smooth at the price. Great for simple, everyday drinking."
Dr Laurence G Rocke (19-Dec-2018)
"I have reviewed below. Bought two bottles and the second was much better than the first. No idea why but if they continue to be as good as the second then this really is tremendous everyday value"
Mr Paul Anderson (29-Nov-2018)
"Very difficult as it is so cheap. Fruity and drinkable but only just. A bit rough round the edges but what do you expect for not much more than the cost of a bottle of ale. I personally would spend a few pennies more to get a slightly more gentle everyday tipple"
Mr Paul Anderson (22-Nov-2018)
"No idea how you did it but I’m glad you did. Surely the best sub £6 bottle of red in the country."
Mr Jonathan Rippon (22-Nov-2018)
"5 stars for the price point of course, but I actually think that this is better than the 2016. A very "full" wine and a very satisfying mid-week tipple!"
Dr Paul Stockbridge (16-Oct-2018)
"Plenty of fruit and guts. Excellent value for money."
Mr George Fleri (13-Oct-2018)
"Just adding my voice to the previous view. This is satisfying, fruity, and absolutely amazing at the price point. The best 'budget' wine I've had in years. "
Rev Robert Stanier (14-Sep-2018)
"This is by far the best Spanish and low priced wine I have ever tasted! All my family and friends who have been given a glass rate it highly too and have been pleasantly surprised at its excellent value. It shall always be one of my favourites and has an unusual but delicious flavour."
Mr Fraser Adam (21-Jul-2018)

the price, though it’s a bit wine-gummy if you mind that sort of thing. - Victoria Moore"
2016 VINTAGE - MEMBER REVIEWS
"This was yet another new grape variety for my palate to enjoy. One of the big bonuses of being a Wine Society member on a mixed bag of bin end deals and wine without fuss plans is getting to sample these random wines I'd never normally choose! It was fine, nothing more nothing less. On first taste I didn't actually like it at all, seconds out of the bottle it seemed a touch too bitter BUT that said it did open up well over the next few hours, on my second glass I started to enjoy it more and more, that initial harshness did seem to ease off quite a bit. Full bodied, quite fruity with higher alcohol than similar shaded wines. Enjoy with a rich paella and a classic Western from Clint Eastwood!"
Mr Simon James (02-Oct-2018)
"Great party wine. Ive served it at several functions to a warm response."
Michael M Steer Esq (08-Sep-2018)
"Bought this when visiting the showroom. Was a bin end for under a fiver. Great value. Big robust flavours and a deep deep burgundy colour. Stands up really well to spiced food. "
Mr Tom Rodger (14-Jul-2018)
"Very fruity, easy to drink and good value."
Mr David J Wyman (09-May-2018)
"Dreadful, cheap and nasty, why is the Society selling this range?"
Mr David J Wyman (09-May-2018)
"Another excellent value wine from TWS. I've had other Jumilla's from other suppliers that have tended to be over perfumed/spiced; this one is much nicer. Smooth, deep and very tasty."
Mr Richard Hadfield (08-May-2018)
"Can't believe how good this wine is. Its full of fruity aromas, is full bodied and satisfying to drink. It seems to go with most foods and is great value as an every day wine."
Mr Daniel Moran (13-Apr-2018)
"It was just Okay."
Mr John Arthur (22-Feb-2018)
"Bought this in previous year and was not overly impressed but ordered again after reading reviews. As with most Society Reds I have bought they are not worth the money unless you need a bottle to add to your cooking. Avoid... and pay a bit more for a decent red."
Mr Terry Bates (21-Jan-2018)
"For the price, you'll probably find nothing better elsewhere. It's rounded and bouncy with cherry and bruised ripe fruit."
Mr Thomas Day (14-Jan-2018)
"Nice depth of flavour, unusual in that is has an interesting aniseed hint with a smoky overtone. Moderate to high tannin, a good food complement but a little to furry to drink alone."
Mr Martin Reeves (20-Nov-2017)
"I bought two bottles of this wine because I have enjoyed earlier vintages. I bought it to compare against a much more expensive wine made from the same grape. The expensive one was too sweet for my tastes but the WS bottle was quite astringent and was only drinkable with food. The strange thing is that the second bottle was so much better than the first that it was like a different wine. It restored my faith in this wine. I can only conclude that there must be the odd bottle in each batch that is not quite up to standard."
Mr Mark Faulkner (16-Oct-2017)
"This is a great wine for the money. Nice depth of flavour. At the price we think it's difficult to beat. Don't be shy give it a try"

"The Wine Society's
always been strong on regional Spain and their own label wines are superb. The
Society's Southern Spanish Red is a chunky, ripe, slightly rustic red made from
monastrell. It's big and bold and benefits from the warmth of south-eastern Spain's
sun. - Giles Luckett"

"Two Spanish stunners
[this and Sabina Tempranillo, Navarra 2016] … impressive buys. - Olly Smith"
2015 VINTAGE - MEMBER REVIEWS
"Disappointing and did not live up to expectations based on other reviews. I found this wine to be rather astringent and only palatable alongside gutsy food. On the plus side it did not deteriorate having been open for several days but the fact that it took me almost a week to polish off the bottle tells its own story."
Mr Bob White (23-Sep-2017)
"What a happy, smiling wine! I thought that this quality at this price was a thing of the past. Other reviews describe it very well. Lovely and tasty with no vices."
Mr Alan Kingsbury (17-Aug-2017)
"Exceptional for the price.
"
Mr John Arnould (07-Aug-2017)
"Great value at a rock bottom price. A wine to go with anything, in the absence of anything more special / suited."
Mr Graeme Parnell (31-Jul-2017)
"At the price, this is a remarkably fruity, full wine with good length. Great value."
Mr Colin Mitchell (26-Jul-2017)
"Lovely dark berried fruit. Well-balanced. Astonishingly good for the price. You'd have to pay at least another couple of quid for something this good from a supermarket."
Mr Colin Hewson (12-Jul-2017)
"Berry good at this price! The label is the only offensive part about it."
Mr Christopher McKee (04-Jul-2017)
"Review reviewed again in the early summer by myself only. Think this wine is more of a spring/summer red. Rich in dark fruit and holds its body. Shame about the label but don't let that put you off. Slips down very well and is not offensive in anyway shape or form. Would be a very good table wine"
Mr Charles Robin (03-Jun-2017)
"Good value for money - very clean and moreish red fruit flavours. Very drinkable on it's own and will equally stand up to hearty home cooking. I agree with Nick - you could spend lightly more but can't fault it on value."
Mr Callum Montgomery (30-May-2017)
"Excellent wine, bit of a bargain"
Mr Gordon Allan (18-Apr-2017)
"Pretty good dark ripe fruited red. Perfectly good for a midweek drink, when anything too pricey seems extravagant. As others have mentioned spending a few more quid will get you a more interesting Mourvedre/Monastrell, but if value is paramount this is a decent buy.
"
Mr Nick Foster (06-Apr-2017)
"Four stars from the wife. I think 3. It's super cheap, and very drinkable. As always a couple of quid more reaps rewards, but this is pretty good - for £5.25!!!"
Mr Matthew Harris (28-Feb-2017)
"I agree with Anthony O'Halloran, this has to be the best value red wine out there. Lovely fruity mid week glugger.
"
Mr Jonathan Rippon (18-Feb-2017)
"Nicely balanced with interesting depth of flavour, easily drinkable, our family wine tasters were all impressed...... on my next ordering list!"
Mr Martin Reeves (13-Dec-2016)
"Thought I'd come back a add another review for this wine. It's an ultra cheap full wine, with wines like this there's usually good points but some underlying wrongness that you have to ignore and put down to it just being cheap wine. This however is different, it's very good quality wine that can be enjoyed sip by sip. The supermarkets would sell this for twice the price and I wouldn't be disappointed, it's just full and clean. Still my best ever red at this price."

oak spice to complement the ripe, plush black fruit. Really very impressive,

Prof Anthony Pinching (12-Aug-2016)
"Not impressed, not recommended."
Mr Martin Reeves (11-Aug-2016)
"I've tried a couple of other reds from the WS in this price range and to be honest I was disappointed, they weren't any worse than the supermarket offerings in the price range so I remained positive in the reviews. However this is a stunner. Interestingly while the other 2 wines were described as "full bodied" I found them a bit sour and thin, while this wine is described as "medium bodied" I found it a lovely full mouthful of smooth, sweet, savoury fruit and earthiness. I think this is the best bottle of red I've ever tried at this price and by quite a big margin, tastes like a £10 bottle from the supermarket, a true bargain."
Mr Anthony O'Halloran (20-May-2016)
"The 2014 is a very good wine that drinks well straight from the bottle or a few days later. As noted by others, a nice balance of spicy, earthy and fruity notes. For the price, it's amazing value and I'd recommend it."
Mr Graham Hay (14-May-2016)
"Outstanding value for money red. I concur with the other members tasting notes. It reminds us of many happy holidays in Southern Spain !"
Mr Russell C Barton (11-Feb-2016)
"Another excellent vintage of a wine that is very good value for money."
Mr Kieran Hynes (10-Feb-2016)
"Amazing value. Crunchy cranberries with sweet stewed blackcurrants and a hint of menthol."
Mr Jason Mossman (07-Feb-2016)
"I cannot deny that this was the bottle i least wanted to try. My wife loves Spanish wines, so i got my armed twisted. And it's astonishingly good. Spicy, earthy, fruity, touch of mulberry. Ok the label makes it look like a £5.25 bottle from the corner shop, but the contents are top class Wine Society guzzler. Fantastic value."
Mr James Brown (23-Dec-2015)
2013 VINTAGE - MEMBER REVIEWS
"I did not enjoy this wine and the bottle was not finished. The society claret has set the bar too high and worth the extra pound."
Dr John Baston (11-Jul-2015)
"Warming Mourvedre, no acidity, long finish bursting with flavour. Great value."
Dr Brian Metters (16-Jun-2015)
"Straightforward wine with robust flavour and quite smooth. We drank ours on a camping field, and it was ideal for outdoors, probably good for BBQ etc. Value for money."
Dr Robert Feltham (14-Jun-2015)
"Really enjoying this wine.Fruity with a wonderful smooth aftertaste."
Ms Karen Tyler-Trillo (17-May-2015)
"Oh dear...
Maybe my palate has been damaged by drinking cheap Spanish red wine as a student many years ago but I honestly found this wine to be undrinkable. My expectations were low because it is inexpensive but after three sips widely interspersed with some food I found myself shuddering and refused to drink anymore. That's never happened with a WS wine before. Maybe I had a bad bottle but for me there are much better WS wines for very little more money."
Reverend Nicholas McKee (09-May-2015)
"Not sure whether we have moved onto a new vintage but the bottle I tried recently was a tad underwhelming, lacking body and depth of flavour. This is a pity because the bottles I drank in 2014 were astonishing value for money. Have to hope the recent bottle was an aberration and that other bottles will have the same concentration and weight of previous versions (vintages?)."
Mr Alastair Stewart (16-Apr-2015)
"Mine was the 2013. I was a little underwhelmed because as with much Jumilla I was expecting quite a bit more in the way of body and length that didn't happen for me. There is nothing wrong or offensive about it and maybe on another day at a lower price I might feel more positive. But I'm a bit neutral right now."
Mr Edward Walker (26-Mar-2015)
"Uncomplicated full bodied and great value for money. Prefers to be drunk warmer as can be slightly acidic if too cold. Ideal every day drinking chunky red."
Mr Robert D Clifford-Wing (28-Feb-2015)
"There's no denying that this is an excellent value for money wine. The only criticism I have is that I don't think it really represents the Jumilla style of wine all that well. You have to work quite hard to find the similarity between this wine and the huge, fruity flavour explosions that wines from this region become from around the £15 mark. I'd quite like to see the society do an Exhibition Range Jumilla wine to better show off what the region can offer."
Mr Barry Smith (19-Oct-2014)
"Didn't like it, wouldn't buy it again.
"
Mr Tom Bowen (05-Jul-2014)
"There are a vast amount of reviews for this wine: all of them positive. This is why I though I would try it. I wasn't disappointed. This wine is superb and fantastic value for money. Easily as good as many wines 2 or 3 times the price."
Mr Conal Whyte (12-Jun-2014)
"Staggeringly good value, this wine simply bursts with flavour. Best value red I've tasted in a long time."
Mr Philip Todd (30-May-2014)
"It seems unnecessary to add to the unanimous unqualified commendations that this wine had received, but for what it is worth I would add my own: a fantastic wine for the price."
Mr Peter Crampin (30-May-2014)
"I wanted to buy some everyday or "curry" wines, I knew it was cheap, what I didn't know was that it would be cheap and nasty."
Mr Gordon Fox (29-May-2014)
"Very nice start to my first order
When poured this is lighter than I expected with a rusty brownish tinge, aromas of sweet fleshy plums jump out of the glass along with bonfire ash.
Taste - fleshy sweetish plums, earthy and rustic, easy to drink 13%, nothing too complex but still very nice, a £5.50 bottle that tastes more expensive than it is.
I’ve drunk a lot of Monastrell lately especially on a recent visit to Murcia, Spain and on first tasting this is on a par with most of the wines there."
Mr David Cronin (19-May-2014)
"Superb value for money. Stands up to wines two or three times the price."
Miss Amy Holmes (11-May-2014)
"One of the best value wines I have tasted from Spain in the UK."
Mr Loren Hardwick (29-Apr-2014)
"The best Spanish Monastrell I have yet tasted. The previous reviews say it all."
Mr Mark Jones (04-Apr-2014)
"Very agreeable wine - lot more interesting than one would reasonably expect at this price. Enjoyment per pound, this is the best wine I've bought from The Society."
Mr Roger Dettmer (25-Mar-2014)
"A surprisingly good wine. I'm not normally a fan of Spanish wine but this has changed my view. A very easy drinking and fruity wine - good everyday stuff and good value."
Mr Cliff Snelling (17-Mar-2014)
"A regular favourite - great value, easy drinking well rounded red."
Mr Philip Merrin (04-Mar-2014)
"It does not get much better than this. Fresh, great value and very moreish ."
Mr Jonathan Sharp (20-Feb-2014)
"Summer fruits on the nose. Warm spice and plump cherry with a perfumed sweetness reminiscent of Palma Violets. Not particularly complicated in the finish but good length and decent tannins. Not one to savour alone but a bargain at £5.25. Nose 6.9/10. Initial Taste 7.2/10. Length/Aftertaste 7.0/10.
Overall 7.0/10."
Dr James Reynolds (16-Feb-2014)
"Following the positive reviews it seemed to make sense to give this wine a try, recognising that in many ways Spanish wines seem to currently offer such good value relative to other regions. I gave the wine a couple of hours to breathe, and was stunned by the sheer quality of the wine. It has both balance and elegance - with good depth without being overpowering. At this price point, is in my opinion, -- an absolute steal."
Mr M Prothero-Thomas (07-Feb-2014)
"It's all been said before, but the previous reviews of this wine are spot on. At this price point, which the supermarkets are so keen to compete in, I can't think of anything that can compare to this offering from the Society. Surely this has to be one of the best bargains on the Society's books at the moment."
Mr Kieran Hynes (30-Jan-2014)
"A very well-made, surprisingly complex wine. An extraordinary bargain."
Professor Keith Smith (27-Jan-2014)
"Probably the best value bottle of wine I've ever bought. At this price, amazingly good."
Mr Martin Turner (26-Jan-2014)
"Fruity, well-balanced, smooth, with a satisfying finish. Like new world shiraz blends - though this isn't shiraz - it's a bit on the sweet side, but fortunately less alcoholic than the usual new -world standard. Screw top ensures it keeps well for day 2 and does not become harsh or sour. Very drinkable. Excellent value."
Dr Christopher Currie (07-Dec-2013)
"Excellent value wine from Spain for those midweek suppers, excellent with shepherds pie. Leave this Mourvedre wine to breathe for 30 minutes. Enjoy!"
Mr Malcolm J Davies (25-Nov-2013)
"Thought this was remarkably good for the money, showing that it's hard to beat Spain for value these days. Full of flavour, this may supplant the Sabina Tempranillo as our house red."
Mr William Kennedy (12-Oct-2013)
"This wine is stunning value for money. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Only advice would be to give it plenty time to breathe."
Mr Paul McCormack (15-Sep-2013)
"Not an unpleasant wine and very competitively priced, certainly. But I failed to find the depth and power mentioned in the wine notes. I thought it was very quaffable but rather light and had no great length to speak of."
Mr Patrick Duffy (04-Sep-2013)
"Yes, this is good. In fact, it’s very good. (How many ‘cheap’ red wines can you drink in complete comfort, and with some interest, BEFORE starting to eat – as I’ve just done very happily on first opening my trial bottle?) And by the standards of today (dreadful though they are), this is really good value. (The places misnamed ‘supermarkets’ are full of red wines at this price – none of them of this quality and most lamentably lower.) I just wish we could have the miraculous ‘El Tesoro’ back as well, so we had a choice between two outstanding everyday red wines from Spain - but some people are never satisfied."
Dr John Erskine (26-Aug-2013)
"I can't believe how good this is. There are several Spanish reds at around £6 a bottle or (as in this case) less that are fantastic value. Noticeable how the supermarkets can't seem to find Spanish wine of this quality at this price so well done the Wine Society!"
David Saltiel Esq (01-Aug-2013)
"Quite possibly the best value wine available anywhere in the UK at the moment."
Mr Timothy J Head (01-Aug-2013)
"Slight sweet musk in taste along with red berry, a bit of plum, rich vanilla and spice. Has a good clean finish. Nice wine and excellent value."
Mr James Small (26-Jul-2013)
"I was apprehensive at first when The Society announced this wine. It was by the same bodega as 'El Tesoro' and hoped it was not just a repackaging exercise. Upon closer inspection you can see it is a degree lower in alcohol and upon tasting it, the shiraz is less pronounced that the brilliant value 'El Tesoro'. So, to skip to the end (as you are by now quite bored) it is a great wine at this price. A perfect mid week quaff and I will now reorder on a regular basis. Well done WS."

"Wine Society
membership is worth it, especially when you get wines like this for under £6.
Made from the monastrell grape, drinking this gem is like falling into a pot of
blackberry jam. Food pairing: sausages or chilli. - Helen McGinn"

"As a sub-£6 wine with
personality and flavour, this gives many a supermarket wine a run for its
money. Mostly made from Monastrell, this has beetroot fruit with a plumpness to
the blackberry flavour while its earthy edge prevents it from straying into the
baked fruit territory. Very good value and a very good find. - The Wine Gang"

"
One of The Times Top 50 Winter Reds, 2013 I adored this earthy, concentrated Jumilla red,
made from the powerful monastrell grape, better known as mourvèdre in France and
mataro in Australia. Here it is topped up with a wallop of shiraz, and what
lifts this red from the pack is its brooding, intense, yet surprisingly
elegant, savoury, spiced black fruits-charged palate and lingering damson
plum finish. Savour this cockle-warming winter red with big food.
