2018 VINTAGE - MEMBER REVIEWS
"Very pleasant, dangerously drinkable and rudely good value for money at £8.50. I will be back for more!"
Mr Duncan Spooner (15-Dec-2020)
"If WS allowed for half stars in their reviews, this might drop down by half a point. Smoky, spicy nose with vanilla, clove and cherry. Tastes of dark plum and blueberry. Not much length or complexity, but good value for money."
Mr Addam Merali-Hosiene (11-Dec-2020)
"OK"
Mr James Bowkett (08-Nov-2020)
"Picked up a single bottle to test out, I had been told by my brother in law he found it a little sweet for him so i opened it a little hesitantly but found it extremely drinkable. Like many Californian old vine Zinfandels its punching you in the face with flavours and aromas, its by no means the best of its type but i would buy it again."
Mr Ian Brooks (28-Oct-2020)
Mr Andy Sharples (17-Oct-2020)
"I know a lot of people like this, but I thought it absolutely ghastly: sour and thin with an extremely odd, almost metallic, back taste. I found myself doubting whether it was actually wine. I assume that it is heavily reliant on additives, unlike the glorious Bobal that I included in the same order!
I suppose it's an example of the adage that if something looks too good to be true, it probably is. Why would an old vine bottling from a top Californian producer retail at £8.50? I can only assume that Delicato were relieved to offload this at any price."
Mr Peter J Brennan (13-Oct-2020)
Mr Alexander Taryshkin (11-Oct-2020)
"Terrific on its own or, as we had it, with steak au poivre."
Dr Thomas Hunt (09-Oct-2020)
"Probably still a little young but not a bad little wine."
Mr Phillip Henry (05-Oct-2020)
"Straight forward. Very likable Zinfandel. Seemed in full flavour without decanting."
Mr Daniel Worth (02-Oct-2020)
"Not super complex, but very enjoyable and decent value."
Professor Stephen Babbage (26-Sep-2020)
"Ridiculously delicious. Buy again! Smooth and sweet dark fruits."
Mr Thomas Day (17-Sep-2020)
"When I first joined the W/S I bought a couple of bottles of highly recommended wines and those that did well in the W/S sampling. Zinfandel is not a grape that I tend to look out for, but decided to give it a go. Of all the wines that I bought, this came out the best. We were stunned that a "house wine", for such reasonable money, could be so great. The second time, I bought even more bottles! Give it a go. Many don't rate it as a great Zinfandel but it is certainly a great bottle of wine."
Mr Dafydd Griffith (08-Sep-2020)
"Disappointing. I have bought three different Zins at around the same price point and the other two knock the spots off this... inofensive and insipid. Will not buy again."
Mr Mark Pickin (25-Aug-2020)
"The missus and I decided to finish this bottle off tonight. Opened on Friday, I think it's one to drink sooner rather than later. Saying that, it's still not bad and for £8.50, it's well priced.
The colour in the glass is dark ruby. Intensity on the nose is medium(+) with a whiff of alcohol. On the palate, medium. Notes of strawberry, cherry, raspberry, vanilla and chocolate.
It's a full-bodied Zinfandel. Tannins are medium(-) with a medium finish."
Mr Paul O'Keeffe (17-Aug-2020)
"The Wine Society description of this wine is spot on. Cherry Cola absolutely, with enough else going on to give it four stars. It could easily be the robust accompaniment to a meaty main course or barbeque. I can also imagine the pleasure of sipping it in front of a fire on a winter evening.
"
Mr Charles Yoe (10-Aug-2020)
"An easy-drinking house red but the word, bland, comes to mind. Both the palate and note were unexciting. But at £8.50 for a USA wine, certainly provides value. Won't be rushing to buy more of this one though compared with some of the Society's other own-brand wines. "
Mr Richard Norton (25-Jul-2020)
"Very nice zinfandel. I've had a lot of 'big name' zins that are not as good as this. It's all down to taste of course but imho this is good and exceptional value for money. Try it. I doubt you'll be disappointed. "
Mr James Roberts (18-Jul-2020)
"Bought a case in those romantic days of lockdown when you weren’t sure what you’d be able to get. Tastes like a humid day near the beach in LA. Dark fruit and a bit of sweat. "
Mr Edward Bogira (15-Jul-2020)
"Just had my first bottle of this Zinfandel that I am about to reorder . It has good fruit and an unexpected depth of flavour and a pleasing body to it. A real gem at the price point."
Mr Mohd Norizam Che Yim (06-Jul-2020)
"Yes, this represents good value indeed. I'm particularly keen on Zinfandel, so if it's your bag too then you won't be disappointed."
Dr Jeremy Platt (27-Jun-2020)
"The description is accurate but I was expecting a little more complexity. It's certainly very easy drinking and the "house red" description is accurate. I got a lot of raspberries on the nose but I found the finish a little lacking.
It is certainly very good value and I can see why it is popular.
I am perhaps being a little harsh with a 3 star but I generally prefer Old World wines with a little more character.
"
Mr Martin Wingate (11-Jun-2020)
"No point in repeating others' reviews - i'm as praising as they are. It's lovely stuff, not as thin as most zin, and a snip at under a tenner. Buy some and surprise yourself."
Mr Andrew Northfield (08-Jun-2020)
"Smooth and very easy drinking"
Mr Rory Lynch (07-May-2020)
"Before I tried this my opinion of Californian Zinfandel was clouded by too much of the insipid mass produced stuff. The "old vine tag" in the title caught my eye as various tastings of other wines have confirmed that this does make a highly discernible and favourable difference. This wine not only has delicious fruit on first tasting but a deeper slightly smokey depth of flavour making it very enjoyable indeed Well done to the Wine Soc's buyers for searching it out!"
Mr John F Card (07-May-2020)
"A very enjoyable tasty wine full of subtle flavours. Smooth to drink really enjoyed with a pasta spinach chorizo dish my wife put together "
Mr Barrie Sabin (06-May-2020)
"Dark red full bodied wine. Taste of bramble fruits, slightly acidic, say rustic, still a pleasant glass of wine, might buy again. If you like Zinfandel this will not disappoint. Imported and bottled in Germany."
Mr Timothy Snelgar (06-Apr-2020)
"This wine changed my wine drinking forever. Everything I taste now, I compare to this. For me, it is the alpha and the omega, it is all I want from a wine."
Mr David Owen (28-Mar-2020)
"As described, a genuine classic Californian Zinfandel but better than expected. Nice body, with no horrible aftertaste and not too sweet.
I will definitely be going to back to this one. "
Mr Rob Lawley (06-Mar-2020)
"A pleasant surprise. I know very little of Zinfandel but a friend suggested I try some. The flavour is quite different to the old world wine I’m used to, but it’s definitely drinkable and definitely more-ish. Worth a try in the very least."
Mr Hugo Cannon (17-Feb-2020)
"Lacks the finesse of the 2017 vintage but is pleasant enough. I don't agree with the WS description of this wine displaying cherry cola in the nose, as I have a particular dislike of cherry cola. It is however a good example of Californian Zinfandel, with good fruit and length, and offers reasonable value for money.
I am hoping the 2019 vintage will match the quality of the 2017 vintage, which was outstanding."
Mr Peter Laggan (28-Jan-2020)
"Really like this. Cherry and vanilla flavours. Good value"

"Just ordered my second case as we really enjoyed this wine - similar to a Uruguayan Tannat or a Primitivo from Puglia but slightly more peppery. I'd recommend this wine for easy drinking - particularly good with cheese"
Dr John Garner (05-Jun-2020)
"At this price, a steal. We just know what we like and for us this was delicious, rich ripe nearly like a port. Wanted more but OOS so hope the 2018 is as good."
Mr Robert Webster (12-Feb-2020)
"I am gutted that the 2017 vintage has sold out. This is the best wine I have had, by a country mile, from the Wine Society.
The 2018 vintage does not hold a candle to this."
Mr Peter Laggan (28-Jan-2020)
"Delicious rich brambly mouthful with a touch of vanilla and oak. I will definitely buy this again. Incredibly moreish."
Mrs Heather Carr (14-Dec-2019)
"Zinfandel is my favourite and this is my most favourite. Really full bodied. Holds up to most food. A lovely wintery wine at an excellent price."
Mrs Carol Clark (25-Nov-2019)
"For some reason this wine tastes much better the next day after opening. Not something I usually advocate but try it."
Mr Geoffrey Weaver (23-Nov-2019)
"Tremendous value at this price, not the best wine you’ll ever drink but pleasant enough and at a great price point."
Mr Rob Young (03-Nov-2019)
"I keep coming back to this one and, for my money, it's a better wine than the Brazin. Not overly complex but a gentle oakieness and plenty of fruit. Very easy to drink, with or without food."
Mr Paul McManus (01-Nov-2019)
"Fantastic wine, packed with fruit flavour, particularly cherry. The hint of vanilla is delightful, Cant get enough of it."
Mr Martin Searle (12-Aug-2019)
"The first bottle was underwhelming: too fruity and seemed thin. Having loved the Exhibition I decided it was the route to go. However, we tried the second bottle the following week and decanted it. It was like tasting a different wine. It was smooth and mellowed: the fruit was still at the forefront but less sharp. Definitely worth ordering again."
Mr David J B McKee (05-Aug-2019)
"Very good value wine. Good full bodied flavours and well priced. Will definitely buy more."
Mr Michael Cooke (04-Jul-2019)
"Zinfandel and Primitivo do not come better than this. Smooth, fruity and goes with a wide range of food. Also good without food!
Cracking good value for money"
Mr Matthew Houston (28-May-2019)
"You can actually taste this wine & it hits the spot. Claifornian reds take some beating compared with the old traditional harsh French reds that are still out there."
Mrs Mary E Jones (25-May-2019)
"This is possibly the first time I've thought that a Society wine that I didn't like was actually poor, rather than just not to my taste.
Very sweet, but without the balance of acidity that previous vintages have had, this was very similar to the typical supermarket offerings you can pick up for around the same price, which TWS usually try to avoid. One small glass was consumed with the rest going down the sink.
The only other review for this vintage that is available is positive, so I suppose it's not impossible that my bottle was faulty, although with it being under screwcap I would have thought that unlikely."
Mr Kieran Hynes (13-Apr-2019)
"Really nice drinkable wine for the price"

Mr Sam Povey (09-Mar-2019)
Mrs Victoria Storer-Young (24-Feb-2019)
"A smooth and easy drinking red with richness of the fruit and the flavours. The fruity aromas balance the slight acidity of the wine. Rich in colour with the fresh aromas for the senses makes it an easy drink. I had it with fish and it went well with it. So would recommend to anyone who likes a red with fish dishes. A very good wine for a decent price and palatable with bright flavours like the Californian sun."
Mr Paul John (18-Feb-2019)
"Great example of a good Californian Zinfandel. Big and bold fruit, easily enjoyed with or without food."
Mrs Harriet Barr (12-Feb-2019)
"I'm not usually much of a Zinfandel drinker but this made for really pleasurable, interesting drinking. The fruit flavours on opening are really big, sweetish, comforting; like sinking into the upholstery of a big American car. My wife complained of a slight acridity, which I confess I couldn't find, but we both enjoyed this more after it had been left to breathe for a while. Might be a tricky one to pair with food but I enjoyed this alone - perhaps with a bit of cheese?"
Mr Patrick Vickers (19-Jan-2019)
"This has become our favourite easy drinking red. It's very smooth and fruity and also reasonably priced."
Mr Nicholas C Salter (18-Jan-2019)
"Excellent Zin for the price. Good depth and length."
Mr Mohammed Suleman (14-Jan-2019)
"Delicious red. Beautifully balanced fruit and acidity. Terrific value. "

"Well worth the money, left the breath and served at the right temperature it transforms itself to a £10 bottle of wine "
Mr Ben Fox (28-Dec-2018)
"This is delicious - lots of berry and pepper. Breathe for half an hour. "
Mr Rory Pogson (28-Dec-2018)
"Excellent value. Smooth, easy drinking with lovely fruit and counter-balancing dryness. A hit."
Mr Jonathan Smith (25-Dec-2018)
"Redcurrant and cranberry on the nose, some sweet strawberry too on the palate, the acidity is quite marked and counteracts the sweetness though.
Not a complex wine, but well made and full of flavour and pretty versatile with food I would imagine.
Good value. "
Mr Mark Colman (14-Dec-2018)
"I have really enjoyed this wine. It is remarkably good for the price.
It has a pleasant smooth feel, slightly sweet. Strawberries but also cherry with a nice hint of acidity. It is balanced just right for my taste.
I’m sure it is never going to be described as a fine wine but it is very pleasant for a couple of glasses either on its own or with pasta or bbq.
Just ordered some more.
"
Mr Graeme Creighton (16-Nov-2018)
"Really enjoyable. So fruity and delicious.
"
Miss Carmen Walker (10-Nov-2018)

"Wow - having lived in CA for 5 years, Old vine Zin was my go to. This, one has a real twist though with a French nuance - refined feel and austere.
Nice cherry touch: blended, rich and full on palate.
Smooth, creamy, heavy with a spicy, zippy feel that goes with the best of Zins.
At the price, a bargain for an everyday Zin
"
Mr Hugo Allen-Stevens (04-Oct-2017)
"Sumptuous fully bodied wine which is richer than its price. Happy to serve this to guests. Would go well with red meats, cheese. Pleasantly surprised."
Dr Martin Wilkinson (12-Sep-2017)
"This makes Ribena taste sour.
Far too sweet without food to tame it.
With cheese and serrano ham, it settled down a bit and there was some complexity."
Mr Simon Bourke (26-Jul-2017)
"This is fine but no more. The standard critique of Zinfandel is that it's all a bit simple, but I am usually fine with that: juicy fruity stuff is good for me ... but this really is a bit simple. I suggest upgrading to the Lodi old vine Zinfandel, if you want good zin."

"I have had good experiences previously with the Californian Zinfandels but this one was flat, lacking the usual fruity punch that I would expect. In fact it didn't have much flavour at all."
Ms Michelle Stone (13-Sep-2017)
"This is an excellent example of a red zinfandel which would compete with bottle two or three times the price.
With a fuller body, plenty of dark red fruit flavours plus an edge of sweetness, this is very drinkable on it's own or with food.
Definately worth having at least a few bottles available for impromptu entertaining or just as a treat."
Mr Ian Glenister (31-May-2017)
"I had tried the 2013 vintage and was pleasantly relieved the 2014 vintage matched its predecessors.
This fantastic zinfandel is a deep ruby color with tantalizing dark bramble & cherry, leather, oak, and mineral notes. After letting it settle for 15 min, I also picked up hints of leafiness. On the palate, it was delicately off-dry but not cloying, medium body, medium acidity and low tannins. The flavors matched the nose and ended with a long finish. Overall, I felt this wine was exquisitely balanced and smooth with the quality being very good. The price tag is definitely easy on the wallet and very good value. Highly recommended as a lovely aperitif red.
If you like dry red wines with higher tannins level leaving that mouth puckering sensation than DO NOT choose this wine."
Ms Cristina Villacorta (22-Feb-2017)

Dr Paul Thomson (15-Aug-2016)

"OK. Interesting and unusual mix of fruit flavours but lacks "grip" for me."
Mr Colin Mitchell (21-Apr-2016)

Mr Thomas Choong (21-Apr-2016)
"This is my first tasting of a Wine Society wine. I want to set a benchmark so I've chosen from the 'Society' range. I'm a happy man, this wine surpasses my expectations, the bar has been set high for future explorations. With Californian Zinfandel I'm already reaching out into new territory, in terms of bouquet and taste it meets the promise of its tasting notes, it's satisfyingly full but at the same time surprisingly light for its 14.5 per cent, and that little bit of sweetness was welcome with our Tunisian lamb."
Mr Tom Bulley (28-Nov-2015)
"A smooth, well-balanced and rounded wine with all the big bold dark-fruit flavours you would expect from old vine Zinfandel. I very much enjoyed it and will be going back for more. Its also very good value for money. Another cracking wine from the Wine Society - well done! ."
Mr Paul Everett (26-Jun-2015)
"I'm new to the Society and fairly new to the whole wine scene but whilst I don't dislike white's I'm definitely a Red wine and more lean towards big Full Bodied wines. So my first 12 bottles was a chance to pick a selection of 11 Reds (+ 1 Society Champagne) and hopefully get a chance to taste some well reviewed Reds and see what I think of them.
I do like the Zinfandel grape wine and had the "Ravenswood" before that I did like but found a big difference when I move from one year to a more newer. This "Society's California Old-Vine Zinfandel 2013" I found better than any of the Ravenswood ones and was as described on the Tin with a very Long finish. The only reason I wouldn't buy it next time is not because it wasn't good but more that I'd like to try another producer and may be another area. Thanks Wine Society for a very good value tasty Zinfandel *****"

"Sourced by Delicato
mostly from Monterey and Lodi, this is not one of those jammy, headbanging,
knee-weakening zinfandels but a rather more balanced and medium-bodied style of

enough savoury acidity and dry grip on the finish to suit barbecues and grills.

"Very nice wine and an excellent 'entry-level'(?) Californian Zinfandel that would stand up to similar wines at least £4 more expensive. It is full in the mouth, plenty of fruit and a short but lingering after taste of dry-spiciness. Stands up to food very well and works a treat with meaty sausages and grilled/BBQ meats. Worth trying at least once - as it's just a pity it comes from where it does."
Mr John Dryburgh (31-Jul-2014)
"Lacks body - and I had to check it said Zinfandel on the label. Disappointing for a Californian Zinfandel. Would not buy again."
Mr Martin Swallow (14-Jul-2014)
"Easy drinking unpretentious red, fine on its own or with snacks. Will order again."
Mr Geoffrey Kaile (08-Jul-2014)
"The fruit was there but a bit lacking in body and concentration. Drinkable but not outstanding."
Mr Jeremy D Hicks (18-Jun-2014)
"Vile - I found this sweet, with vanishingly little body for an old vine zinfandel, slightly cloying, and hugely disappointing. Poured both bottles down the sink. Exactly the kind of thing you would live with if you were given a glass of it in a mediocre gastropub, but for home drinking you can do much better at the price."
Mr Neil Hart (14-May-2014)
"Sweet and fruity. Coud be drunk on it's own on one of theose rare, ideal summer days lazing in the garden or with something spicy.
"
Mr Cliff Snelling (17-Mar-2014)
"I found this a perfectly pleasant accompaniment to a spicy pizza. Not the most high-brow of combinations but for the price you could do a lot worse. Big Zin flavours, not complex, easy-drinking... happy days."
Mr Robert Goodwin (10-Jun-2013)
"A pleasant, medium bodied wine, plenty of fruit. A little acidity & certainly some sweetness, neither really overpowering, though maybe this would become cloying after the second glass. Another good value wine, but this one perhaps doesn't have the depth or complexity you'd get with more expensive Zinfandel. I'll try this again in about 6 months, if it's still available, to see if it comes on at all. If not, still not money wasted."
Mr Asa Joseph (08-May-2013)
"Regarding the 2011, I liked this wine and found it reasonable value for money. However, I'd recommend spending the extra pound or so for the Ravenwood (which I really enjoyed). I found this a little too acidic (contrary to earlier reviews), although the rich zinfandel berry flavours are pleasingly evident. Maybe still a little young so I'll be laying my remaining bottle down for year before trying again."
Mr Trevor Smith (22-Apr-2013)
"Not particularly subtle or complex, but if you're in the mood for something big, jammy, full and enjoyable then it fits the bill very nicely."
Mr Andrew Tulloch (07-Dec-2012)
"A big, fruity zin with a slight peppery kick. As others have stated, there's nothing in the way of complexity, but it's certainly good value at the price. However, if you're new to zinfandel, I'd recommend you test the waters with something a little more refined."
Mr Sebastian Taylor (30-Jan-2012)
"Very fruity on the nose and on the palette. Not overly complex but certainly has character. A fine choice at a price that matches it's quality."
Mr Richard Bateman (28-Jan-2012)
"A rich very dark wine. Not dry or challenging but for me most enjoyable."
Dr John Baston (19-Oct-2011)
"I actually quite enjoyed this. There is certainly a sweetness, but I didn't find it cloying - more like a rich 'port' like quality to the fruit. Would offset a sharp blue cheese nicely"
Mr Matthew Robison (23-Sep-2011)
"This was disappointing. Sweet as a cola bottle and lacking in acidity to balance it. Won't buy again."
Mr William Davies (27-Jul-2011)
2007 VINTAGE - MEMBER REVIEWS
"I agree with the other reviews in so far as the simplicity, sweetness, smoothness, and the fruitiness, but am disappointed in that that is all there is to this wine. No tannin at all, no substance, no depth, might as well drink Ribena, it costs much less. I am glad I only bought one bottle of it in a sampling case of Californian wines. The Exhibition Amador 2006 on the other hand is wonderful for an extra £4.45."
Mr Yavuz Mutlu (15-Jul-2010)
"Absolutely delicious; great value."
Mrs Margaret McGregor (27-Dec-2009)
"This is an absolutely brilliant Zinfandel. Better than most I have had, and perhaps that is because, not inspite, of its somewhat simple style. It has gorgeous fruity flavours, very exuberant and packed with flavour. The body is actually fairly medium, and it washes down almost like juice. It has a certain sweetness to it, but not enough to make it unpalatable. Quite the opposite in my opinion. Easy to enjoy on its own and an excellent complement to simple grilled or hearty dishes. This is easy to enjoy I'll be keeping a regular stock of this brilliant young wine."
Dr N Chenduran Shanmuganathan (14-Nov-2009)
"Looking for something different, I tried this wine and found it to be fruity flavoured and very smoothe to taste. After my first glass, It was so enjoyable that it was an easy decision to have a second. I now make sure I keep a regular supply and would recommend this to have either with a meal or just on its own."
Mr John McClarty (10-Aug-2009)
