"This is why you are a member of the Wine Society.
Deep, richly satisfying wine; medium bodied, some fruit and real complexity, all for £8.50 because it's from a grape you've never heard of, and from a country whose reputation for producing great wine is hardly stellar.
I see the recommendation is for 'hearty mushroom dishes', which is weird. How often does anyone eat a 'hearty mushroom dish'? My guess is what they mean is "It'll taste better with food", which is true, but which is so boring that they felt they needed to be more specific. Ignore the mushrooms reference. Just buy it and enjoy. I'll be buying more."

"This is really rather delicious! Felt light to medium bodied on the palate, with the result that it's quite dangerously drinkable. I got a lovely hint of coffee, then black fruits, on the nose. Ironically, reading the previous review, I was actually already having a hearty mushroom dish (the Bosh! Asian mushroom "ribs") and the wine stood up happily to a spicy BBQ sauce. This is £8.50 of your money well spent, and always great to get off the wine beaten track."

"Well I have known Mavrud wines going back to the Communist era - always been a value medium bodied red. This is a pretty good example despite the weird marketing. Easy drinking. Love it. "

"Bought this as part of the Adventurers Case, as I was feeling adventurous! I felt impressed enough by it to leave a review - which I never normally do. Excellent balance of fruit, tannin and acid. Perhaps slightly too much tannin to just sit and quaff, but it would pair well with rich, meaty dishes, or possibly mushrooms ;)"

"A real eye opener from TWS. Deep ruby with pronounced aromas of smokey black fruits; cherry, plum, mulberry and a medicinal quality similar to myrtle, (the berry used to flavour the Sardinian liqueur Mirto), clove, cocoa, earth and hints of vanilla and mint. Dry, medium (+) acidity, medium (+) grippy but ripe tannins and the 13.5% alcohol is seamless, medium body, good intensity and quite a long, slightly bitter, finish.
Flavours are fresh from fruit allowed to reach full phenolic ripeness. The smoke is unmissable but not overdone and perfectly compliments the fruit. Definite potential for ageing for, at least 3~5 years although I have no idea how it will develop.
Well done TWS!"
