The Minho: Wines of the moment
New wave whites with Atlantic freshness just keep getting better and better, says buyer Jo Locke MW
The Minho region is the verdant home of Vinho Verde, a place of understated beauty and life-affirmingly refreshing white wines. A far cry from the distinctly fizzy and heavily sweetened wines of old (though there are still a few of those around – pay just a little more to avoid them), the Minho produces beautifully pure wines with Atlantic freshness and moderate alcohol. It was no surprise to see one of these fine whites among our Wine Champions once again this year.
Award winning team and trophies at Adega de Monção
The Adega de Moncão, producer of The Society's Vinho Verde, has an impressive array of trophies and certificates in support of its position as one of the leading producers of the Monção e Melgaço region (now represented by a fresh new logo). There is a wealth of history in the region too, and the ever restless Anselmo Mendes has invested in an exciting new project focusing, of course, on the alvarinho grape variety, but as the photos show it will be a while before we can enjoy the results!
