Cheval Blanc is one of Bordeaux’s most iconic properties, and the 2025 is a triumph of adversity. It is set to be one of the most sought-after wines of the vintage due to the extremely small quantities produced, with yields of just 15hl/ha — the smallest harvest at Cheval Blanc since 1961. Poor fruit set in 2024 and the driest growing season in the estate’s history resulted in tiny berries, but winemaker Pierre-Olivier Clouet has managed them brilliantly. A pure nose of violets, redcurrants, bramble and iris is met on the palate with distinct minerality, concentration and direction. The fruit is ripe but never sweet, with powdery tannins that build steadily across the palate. Everything is in place this year — impressive when the alcohol is just 12.7% — and the palate will continue to fill out during élevage. Pierre-Olivier described the 2025 as “2010 without the alcohol” — fine praise indeed. No Petit Cheval was produced this year. Drink from 2035 to 2055. 12.7%
