This racy Rhine variety is often wrongly suspected of always being offputtingly sweet – not so, and even in late-harvest or dessert mode it’s never cloying. As comfortable in the southern hemisphere as it is in Alsace and Germany, whose excellent dry versions (trocken) now complement the traditional sweeter wines, it can live to a ripe old age, often developing petrol/kerosene aromas.
