From its heartland in the northern Rhône to the southern hemisphere, the spicy one is capable of producing both gratifying cockle warmers and long-lived elegant reds – as a very general pointer, ‘syrah’ indicates the latter style, ‘shiraz’ the former. Look out for juicy black fruits and pepper notes.
