Michael J. Corbett’s genre-redefining style is evident in the finesse he has imparted to this syrah from his Botanic range, which sits just below the tightly allocated 'V' range. Sourced exclusively from the Rende vineyard in Blewitt Springs, it opens with a striking mix of liquorice root, crushed slate and black olive, wrapped around concentrated blackberry and blackcurrant fruit. The palate is seamless and flowing, almost silken, yet driven by a core of energetic freshness that keeps the wine lifted despite its intensity. There is superb detail to the structure: fine but assertive tannins, a savoury mineral line and beautifully judged tension. Notes of violet, peppercorn and dark spices build towards a long, pure and resonant finish. Corbett’s hallmark fastidiousness and vision show in the clarity and precision of this syrah, which combines classical varietal character with a distinct elegance. A compelling and ageworthy release.
