The Society's Cava Reserva Brut 2023

Sparkling Wine from Spain - Cava and Sparkling
4.000000000 star rating 5 Reviews
This fragrant, appley and organic Spanish sparkling wine is produced by Sumarroca, a small family estate. It's a bottle-fermented and aged blend of parellada, macabeo and xarel-lo, plus some chardonnay to add finesse. Sumarocca’s commitment to sustainability is nothing new and we’re delighted to name them as one of our Wine Society’s Pioneers. Their conversion to organic farming began in 2014 and they’re also SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit) certified since 2022, with an in-house annual sustainability report covering all environment and social aspects, including their carbon footprint, reducing it by 36%. Their drip irrigation system is computer controlled, and only for young vines, and they have a wastewater management system that recovers water from the winery, with 87,480 litres recovered in 2025. A herd of sheep provides mowing services and manure, while all kinds of critters are encouraged by the forest that covers 50% of their estate, with beehives and bat boxes are installed, the latter providing handy and very effective pest control.

Bestselling wines

The Sumarroca family have been making wine for several generations and are now located in the premium wine-growing area of Penedès, nearer Barcelona. Husband and wife Carlos and Nuria Sumarroca bought a 15th-century estate there in 1982 and began producing white and sparkling wines, focussing on making innovative, characterful, balanced wines rather than competing with larger companies. The emphasis is always on quality rather than quantity from their 405ha of land, meaning that they can now use 100% of their own grapes and have ultimate control over the fruit that goes into their wine. With all that in mind, they also practise sustainable farming to preserve the vineyards for future generations and secure their estate for their heirs, with research projects into new production methods and sustainable farming. We are delighted that they make our own-label Cava wines, and delighted, too, to name them one of our Wine Society Pioneers for their work on sustainability.

As well as being certified organic since 2018, they’re also SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit) certified since 2022, while their own annual sustainability report covers all environment and social aspects, including their carbon footprint, which they have reduced by 36%.

Water use is critical in these days of climate change and Sumarocca only irrigate as permitted by the rules for Cava and only at certain times of the year or to sustain young vines. They use a smart irrigation system that carefully manages the needs of the soil or vine and their biological wastewater management system can recover water from internal processes for reuse, with 87,480 litres recovered in 2025, and they even save some from the vineyards!

A local herd of sheep gets involved here too, introduced to the vineyards in winter and spring, though natural critters are also encouraged on their land, particularly in the forest they own that make up 50% of the property. Here the introduction of bat boxes is a win-win with the bats acting as effective pest controllers. They keep bees, too, and manage many natural habitats in the woods and ravines of the estate, helped by their organic methods.

Community is important in Cava too, with lots of families involved locally. Sumarocca is all about supporting the local community, partnering with local suppliers wherever possible and involving themselves in sustainable wine tourism.

Bodegas Sumarroca

The Sumarroca family have been making wine for several generations. They began in the village of Llimiana in Jussa, before moving to the more premium wine-growing area of Penedès nearer Barcelona. Husband and wife Carlos and Nuria Sumarroca bought a 15th-century estate there in 1982 so they could begin producing white and sparkling wines. Since their inception, their philosophy has been to focus on making innovative, characterful, balanced wines rather than competing with larger wineries: their emphasis is always on quality rather than quantity.

To that aim, in 1999 they bought nearly 405ha of land, meaning that they can now use 100% of their own grapes and have ultimate control over the fruit that goes into their wine. This newer land means they are the largest cava producer to make their wines entirely from estate-grown fruit. Production is tightly managed: they use only free-run juice (the pressed juice is sold to other bodegas) and practise sustainable farming to preserve the vineyards for future generations. To further secure their estate for their heirs, they also maintain research projects into new production methods and practise sustainable farming in the vineyards.

They might own some of the prettiest vineyards in the area, but their pickers unfortunately don’t benefit from the views: all harvesting is done at night to ensure grapes are picked at optimum cool temperatures. Pinot noir is grown to make their rosado, whereas their regular cava is made from the...

Pinot noir is grown to make their rosado, whereas their regular cava is made from the traditional macabeo, xarello, and parellada grapes. The addition of a small amount of chardonnay adds an extra dimension that sets this cava above its competitors, one of the reasons why we chose Sumarroca for The Society label.

I am a big fangirl of Cava, especially when they taste like this. Made by a family-run organic estate in the heart of Penedes (not too far from Barcelona), it’s approachable, enticingly drinkable and made with great finesse. You’re greeted with a generous nose of soft pears and slices of lemon alongside sweet baked notes of warming ginger biscuits and buttered toast. Could this be the best value nonchampagne sparkling wine available? It’s definitely up there.
