One of the best-known partnerships in fine wine, Opus One was created by Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Napa pioneer Robert Mondavi, bringing together Bordeaux tradition and Napa Valley fruit. More than four decades on, each vintage remains an important California release, and I’m pleased to offer members our allocation of the 2023.

The 2023 growing season was long and relatively moderate. More than 36 inches of rain replenished the vineyards, followed by a summer without significant heat spikes. Harvest ran from 14th September to 16th October, allowing the fruit to ripen gradually while retaining freshness and aromatic detail.
The blend is 81% cabernet sauvignon, 7% merlot, 6% cabernet franc, 5% petit verdot and 1% malbec, aged for 19 months in French oak. Cassis and red plum are joined by floral notes of cherry blossom and violet, with graphite, tobacco and subtle spice adding complexity. There is good concentration, but also freshness and balance, with fine, silky tannins and a long, composed finish.
The 2023 is a poised and classical expression of Opus One, with plenty of youthful fruit alongside the structure and balance for further development. For members who follow the great wines of Napa, this is a release well worth considering for the cellar.
