Domaine Gérard Quivy 2023

An extraordinary new discovery. Reserve now

Domaine Gérard Quivy 2023

Part of our Burgundy Fine Wine Spotlight, this is the chance to reserve the beautiful, midweight wines of Domaine Gérard Quivy – a great new find. Quivy is a small family-owned estate located in the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin. The domaine occupies an 18th-century manor house (built around 1704-1710) and owns approximately 7 hectares of vineyards, primarily in Gevrey-Chambertin appellations. It’s an extraordinary discovery. Due to their small size, they have been selling nearly all their wine in France, Belgium, Netherlands and Canada and so are virtually unknown in the UK. I had never heard of them until 18 months ago. This could only happen in Burgundy!

'(A domaine) which I had not heard of but which should be snapped up.'- Wine writer Margaret Rand

These are classic Gevreys, ripe yet fresh with generous, round fruit. In size and elegance, they are situated midway between the light and ethereal style of Taupenot Merme and the late-harvested opulence of Alain Burguet. They are vinified with about 30% whole bunches, which moderates extraction and contributes a lovely freshness and energy. They are matured in an old, deep and beautiful cellar in the classic 228-litre pièce or barrel for about 18 months to soften and round out the tannins.

We are offering three village Gevreys from different sites, Journaux, En Champs and Evocelles, and a Corbeaux premier cru and a Charmes-Chambertin grand cru. All the wines are from the 2023 vintage, which produced wines with typical Burgundian flavours and aromas, and an attractive balance of fruit and acidity. They have a generous and extrovert character, and there is excellent terroir demarcation. Everything is good hierarchically, from Bourgognes to grands crus. The warm year brought a large crop to full maturity with no overripeness and normal levels of alcohol. One can compare it to 2017, in that it has similar aromatic intensity, ripeness, approachability and well-balanced character, but it differs in having greater substance and superior quality. The reds will likely be attractive in their youth and in the medium term.
