Germany 2025

Wonderfully expressive wines while showing great finesse

Germany 2025

The 2025 vintage in Germany is one that brings pure joy and pleasure to the palate. Following on from the racy acidity and clean-cut profiles of the cool 2024 vintage, 2025 maintains the energetic acidity while delivering more supporting fruit and juicy charm. They seem more approachable, generous and mouthwateringly delicious in style. The wines seem to have it all: they have early-drinking appeal, but also the structure to lay down for years and indeed decades to come, like all the great vintages.

2025 was an early harvest, the growing season having provided plenty of sunshine and rainfall. Rainfall in early September meant that growers had to pick quickly and adopt rigorous selection both in the vineyard and winery. Many estates were able to produce high quality across the Prädikat levels with more Spätlese, Auslese, GoldKapsel and Beerenauslese wines bottled. After significant frost damage in the Saar and Ruwer in 2024, which saw yields down by up to 90%, 2025 was a welcome gift in terms of both quantity and quality. Katharina Prüm remarked that the vintage offers ‘a clear and authentic expressions of both vintage and terroir’ and Maximin Von Schubert from Maximin Grünhaus describes it as a ‘superb vintage’.

I can nearly always find enjoyment from the different vintages, but what I love about 2025 is that the wines offer universal appeal. They are wonderfully expressive while showing great finesse, and shouldn’t be missed.
