Château Valcombe
Luc and Cendrine Guénard farm organically at Château Valcombe having taken over from Paul Jeune, owner of Domaine Champertuis, and made their first vintage in 2009. The 15 hectare domaine lies in the foothills of Mont Ventoux, at 300 metres above sea level, where the elevation and cool breezes counter the effects of an essentially Mediterranean climate to give a long ripening period.
The large, rounded stones known as galets cover the limestone dominated soils of the domaine, with bleu argile clay beneath. Syrah, carignan, grenache, and cinsault are grown for red wines and clairette, grenache blanc, roussanne and bourbulenc for whites.
Their vines are all at least 50 years old and are harvested by hand before being sorted and destemmed at the underground winery where the must and wines are moved by gravity rather than by pumps.
Fermentation takes place in underground tanks and ageing in oak, half of the wine in 400-litre or 600-litre barrels. Valcombe is a leading estate producing wines of exceptional quality.
