A South African Exhibition

Case of 6
0 star rating 0 Reviews
Our trio of South African wines from our flagship Exhibition range features three absolute benchmarks, made by producers synonymous with the best of each of these styles. Simonsig were the pioneers of traditional-method sparkling in the Cape in the 70s, responsible for making the first ever Cap Classique; Kanonkop are the undisputed reference point for rich, oak-aged pinotage; and Chris Alheit is one of the most sought after of South Africa’s new-wave winemakers with his mastery of the country’s calling card, chenin blanc. We are immensely proud to work with each one of these producers on our Exhibition label and this mixed case, bringing the three together, delivers deliciousness and value in abundance.

The Society's Exhibition Chenin Blanc, Western Cape 2023

From South African chenin specialist Chris Alheit, from offcuts of his world-renowned Alheit Vineyards range. Part barrel-fermented and matured for a longer period on the yeast lees in 2023, bringing extra breadth and some toasty richness. It's a combination that makes it especially food-friendly, matching a range of options from seafood dishes to quiches.

The Society's Exhibition Cap Classique 2023

A rich, toasty, apple-forward sparkling wine with a fine, well-integrated mousse and crisp, bready finish. Ideal as an aperitif, this has added weight and richness thanks to South Africa's warm climate to pair beautifully will all manner of foods but cod or haddock and chips from the local chippy in particular. The Cape Floral Region is one of the most richly diverse parts of the world in terms of numbers of different plant species and endemism, but is threatened by agriculture and industry. At third-generation family producer, Simonsig, cellarmaster Michael Malan and viticulturist Nicole Pelzer are excited to begin a multi-year landscape-scale biodiversity restoration project which will give space for the native Fynbos and Renosterveld vegetation to thrive on the estate. Three years of funding from the Climate and Nature Programme will enable Simonsig to 'bring back the fynbos', through the development a 2.5ha fynbos block on land formerly planted to vines and through the creation of wildlife corridors between vineyard blocks. By removing invasive species and reintroducing indigenous – and endemic – vegetation, they will be providing new habitats for birds, insects and other species and building biodiversity in the vineyards. As members of the Bottelary Hills Renosterveld Conservancy (in partnership with CapeNature), Simonsig will share learnings and encourage collaboration with other growers in the region. We firmly believe that a vineyard buzzing with life will make better wine and are delighted to partner with the makers of our Exhibition Cap Classique on this project.

The Society's Exhibition Pinotage, Stellenbosch 2022

Pinotage is South Africa's signature grape and arguably nobody does it better than Kanonkop, so we're delighted to work with them on this succulent, plummy and spicy example. A versatile bottle for red meats, grills and roasted vegetable dishes, its fruit sweetness will complement spicier dishes too, like a Mexican-inspired beanburger.
