Conti Costanti
The Costantis are recorded in the annals of Tuscan history since the 15th century and are known to have been making wine in Montalcino since the middle of the 16th. Over the ensuing centuries the family acquired extensive lands in the area and were among the earliest producers of Brunello di Montalcino. The vineyards from which they make their Brunello these days cover 10 hectares to the south of the town at over 300 metres above sea level. Brunello is the local name for the clone of sangiovese grown there and is the only grape permitted in the DOCG. They also grow cabernet sauvignon and merlot for non-DOCG wines. The soils are the classic Tuscan galestro, a type of friable marl also found in Chianti Classico.
Current owner Andrea Costanti took over from his uncle, Count Emilio, in 1983 while not long out of college, but he approached the daunting task of succeeding a man who had given the estate a prestigious reputation with typical energy. His geology degree helped him to understand more completely the soils in which his vines put down roots and with the help of consultant oenologist Vittorio Fiore he has enhanced the reputation further, making elegant but concentrated Brunello di Montalcino that belies the altitude of the vines in its finesse without sacrificing the intensity of flavour typical of the best of the DOCG.
