Chinon Le Clos de Noiré, Domaine de la Haute Olive 2016

Red Wine from France - Loire
1.000000000 star rating 1 Reviews
Made by Bruno Sourdais from his wife Sophie's family property on chalky soils which give softer tannins but a lovely seam of freshness this is a medium-bodied, savoury cabernet franc that has bright cherry and redcurrant fruit on the nose and a mineral, graphite laden, and ferrous palate. Best decanted for an hour before drinking.

Domaine Sourdais

A sixth-generation family-owned estate at Cravant-les-Coteaux, run since 1992 by Bruno Sourdais. There are 55 ha under vine, split between 84 different parcels, with a further 45ha of cereals and meadowland. Bruno believes grassing between the rows makes the wines more 'solid' and uses this method according to the vineyard location and terroir.

In the cellar, small foudres are used for the cuvées, along with some barrels, and there are still some old fiberglass tanks as well as some traditional underground tanks. Two-hectare single vineyard Les Cornuelles is south-facing, on clay/limestone soils with large but lightweight stones, and grassed every other row (because it's harder to work than Les Clos which is all ploughed). Two old and two new foudres are used and blended according to the vintage, as the aim is not to have too much wood in evidence.

Loire Valley Vintage 2016 Anjou Touraine

Perhaps more than any year in recent memory, the Loire was hit with pretty much everything in 2016; a wet early season, early spring frosts and cool temperatures at flowering affecting quantities in places. But luckily a fine end to a challenging season brought huge sighs of relief to growers who managed each new threat with vigilance and patience. Early tastings have shown good, clean fruit in an appealing style which should provide plenty of pleasure in the short to mid term.

The 2016 growing season was one of the most complicated in living memory. Loire vignerons are made of stern stuff and rose to the challenge, despite widespread despondency at the end of August after a heatwave with exceptionally high temperatures that felt like the last straw. Spring was very wet, many appellations were hit by severe frost in April, and it was cool around the critical flowering period, by which time many were already looking at a reduced crop. Severe drought followed and vines – and growers –...

Spring was very wet, many appellations were hit by severe frost in April, and it was cool around the critical flowering period, by which time many were already looking at a reduced crop. Severe drought followed and vines – and growers – were ready to give up, when miraculously, a sprinkling of reviving rain arrived, accompanied by fine weather with cooler evenings, and then a little more rain to help to ripen the grapes and boost the size of the crop.
