EARL Pouizin Vacheron
The Clos du Caillou is an historic site and, as the name suggests, completely walled. Much of the vineyard is on sandy soil and the immediate neighbours include both Rayas and Beaucastel.
This estate used to produce rather heavy, dull wines but its fortunes changed when the daughter of the owners, Sylvie Pouizin, married Jean-Denis Vacheron, of the famous family in Sancerre.
Suddenly the whole Vacheron apparatus for quality management was put into action and over a couple of years the wine changed completely and under his guiding hand Clos du Caillou began producing very stylish wines indeed.
The estate was planted primarily with the grenache grape, and Jean-Denis gradually added small plots of syrah and mourvèdre. Sadly he died much too young but Sylvie carried on his work and vision, with support from this very close family.
