The slightly more intense of Mac's infinitely elegant, delicate chardonnays, this single-vineyard white is cut-glass in vinous form. It has fascinating stony aromas with a hint of sea shell, while the palate is crisp with lemon-tart flavours and grippy texture. Moutwatering lemony and saline notes continue to the very long finish.

From an exciting domaine revitalised when son Gautier Desvignes took over from his father. 2021 sees a return to a fresh and fruity vintage, with slight but ripe tannins. This is already very aromatic and intense.

Shelley Sandell's Tierhoek is one of the world's hidden gems. Literally. Located in the remote mountains of the Piekenierskloof and a 45-minute drive to the nearest town, 'Tierhoek' means 'Leopard's Corner' in Afrikaans and refers to its location nestled into the corner of a hill where leopards are often heard prowling at night. The farm is known for its incredible vineyards, home to old-vine chenin, chardonnay and a hotchpotch of red varieties that'd made even the most famous estates jealous. But after the sad passing of Shelley's husband and years of neglect in the cellar the wines weren't showing their true potential. After an emotional tasting in the cellars in 2022, long-term friend of Shelley's (and The Wine Society) Richard Kelley MW AKA The Liberator decided to call in a few favours to show the potential of the estate. For the red blend it was an obvious choice to call upon the services of Lukas van Loggerenberg who, over the last 4-5 years, has established himself as one of the Cape's rising stars thanks to his impeccable handling of French varietals and a style that's both elegant, floral and fun yet totally engrossing. As always with Lukas the focus here is purity. Letting the quality of the fruit shine through and allowing each component to shine. The grenache is juicy and perfumed with red fruit and spice notes, the syrah giving typical pepper spice and grip, and mourvèdre giving punch, power and a savoury edge. This is gorgeous drunk young lightly chilled but we're sure it'll evolve well in bottle. Glorious.

Von Hovel is one of the oldest wineries in Germany, bought from a monastery it has been in the same family for 250 years. The famous Scharzhofberg vineyard produces wines with elegance and purity and the 2023 is so precise and floral.

This is Tablas Creek's flagship wine, selected from the best lots of estate-grown grape varieties propagated from budwood cuttings taken from the Château de Beaucastel estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and it's a beauty. Based on mourvèdre (40%), with grenache (28%), syrah (22%), vaccarèse (4%), cinsault (3%) and counoise (3%) playing supporting roles, the 2022 vintage is fragrant with wild herbs - especially rosemary - and violet notes, as well as sweet raspberry, and dry, sandy earth. Powerful and intense, this has brilliantly bright acidity bringing balance to the ripeness of fruit, and a supple, silken, flowing mid-palate. Real persistence, with a tug of earthy minerality, red berries and spicy tobacco leaf on the elegant finish. For all the fruit concentration, it's the liveliness and litheness that pulses through the wine - a remarkable achievement in this hot, drought-affected vintage in Paso Robles. Drink this year to 2032. 13.5%.

Jaboulet Aîné bought Domaine Roure nearly 30 years ago and have continued to invest in this 1.4-hectare estate. Coming from just behind the Hermitage hill, this steep, high-altitude site produces some energetic wines with lots of tension. There is stone-fruit and citrus notes that are supported with a waxy texture, some spice and salinity on the finish. 2023 was a relatively warm vintage and there is a juiciness to the core.
