Zinfandel wines

California’s adoptive grape shares DNA with southern Italy’s primitivo, both originally of Croatian descent and both champion heat absorbers. For many years a mass-produced ‘jug’, zin has become a progressively more serious red, its naturally exuberant, palate-enveloping richness given structure by tactical planting and artful winemaking. It’s still a consummate winter warmer.
