You’re invited! What can you expect at a Wine Society event?

The short answer is, a great time! Tastings & Events Manager Catherine Housden tells us everything you need to know about coming to one of our events.

Tastings

One of the perks of your Wine Society membership is having access to tickets for our varied and extensive range of events. They’re open to all members (and you’re welcome to bring guests as long as they’re over 18 and a member has purchased the tickets). At every event you’ll meet at least one of us from the Tastings team (we’re a friendly bunch!) and often other colleagues, and there is no required level of wine knowledge: simple curiosity is plenty enough!

Once you’re booked in, you’ll receive a confirmation email (we don’t send out physical tickets), here’s what to expect next:

Walkaround tastings

Our most popular and most regular events. They’ll either be a mixed theme chosen by the Tastings team, or themed to a particular region. For regional walkarounds, we’re joined by the respective winemakers and reps of the wines being shown – you’ll see these tastings titled as ‘growers’ tastings

When you get to the venue, you’ll be given a glass, booklet and pen, and then you are free to enjoy between 30-45 wines at your own pace. Water and crackers (including gluten free) are always available, as are spittoons (don’t feel obliged to drink every last drop). The team’s always on hand for help and guidance, and you’ll also find enthusiastic and encouraging fellow members to chat to as well.

Tutored tastings

These are seated events where you’ll be provided with wine glasses and tasting notes, and the speaker will present the wines. They’re are a great way to get under the skin of a specific theme or region, and the speakers vary from winemakers, buyers and the Tasting team. While a bit more detailed than walkaround tastings, all are welcome, from beginners to afficionados.

Special events

We also host restaurant dinners with great winemakers, and increasingly more relaxed and informal ‘night-out’ events giving you the chance to mingle and mix with members and friends while enjoying the wines and good vibes.

Online events

Born out of necessity but continued on their own merit, our online Zoom events cover all manner of options from winemaker presentations and taste-along evenings with small-volume tasting kits, to food-pairing events with experts and our in-house chef Paulo Crastequini. They’re the perfect way to enjoy exploring wine from the comfort of your own home, especially if you can’t get to our venues. And if it’s not convenient for you to join us live, you can always find the recordings on our YouTube channel to view at your leisure.

Stevenage events

Our dedicated Members’ Room at Society HQ is a great event space for lunches, dinners and Saturday morning workshops. You can even add a warehouse tour to your visit, so you can learn more about your Society before sitting down for lunch. There’s parking if you’re the designated driver and a fully pedestrianised 10-minute walking route from the train station and nearby hotels if you want to stay over.

NOTE: Some events are particularly popular and can sell out quickly. If an event is shown as SOLD OUT, it’s always worth joining the waiting list as we’ll contact you should places become available.

Catherine Housden

Catherine joined the Tastings team in 2019 after three years in Member Services, and many members will know her in her role as Events Manager. Away from work she is a keen cook, which influences her love of online and in person food and wine events. Her top food and wine pairing? ‘Fino or manzanilla sherry with tapas. All day, every day.’
